What are the best cue brands or custom cues under $500 that keep its value today?

So the best investment under $500.

It should play good as well :)

I really can't think of any new cue that will absolutely hold all of it's value. If you really want new I think something like a Frey sneaky would be a good choice...not too hard to come by but hard enough that it will hold the majority of it's value probably, losing $50 or so for one in perfect condition, maybe even full value if there are no new ones available at a given time.

Otherwise, look at used cues, if you buy used then all the depreciation has likely happened assuming you keep it in as good a condition you got it. A used cue is going to be worth less than a new one in most cases, but given the same condition it doesn't continue to lose value over time like a car would.

Used Schons are usually a good bet.

I will go with used schons as well. custom? production? who cares? I've never, ever shot with a schon I didn't like. never. ever. i'll sell a lot of my cues (not all). my schon will not be one of the last 4 to go(I need to make a list!).
saw a young guy last night at chandley's in Statesville with a schon he may sell. two guys were talking with him 'bout it. when asked price, he said simply, "i will not let it go for under 500".

Omen sneaky pete will be as close as you can get. No new cue in that range will hold 100% value realistically.

No new production cues.

The best is buying a used cue and let someone else take the hit.

Any reputed makers' sneaky petes.
If you can still get them for $500.

This.
I might also add any established regional makers merry widow in A-1 condition.
( I don't think cues are a good "investment" ;however the above should have great odds at holding "value")

I agree with the comments about Schon. Also, any old C- or D- Series McDermott won't go down in value either. Those might actually appreciate.

Loaded question

They all go up in value if you can get them cheap enough .

Sure there going to be some cues go up in value, Custom cues or if Schon was going out of business or the Custom cue maker dies and you can get a 500.00 cue out of them before they pass away .

Most cues that go up in value normally don't sale for 500.00 or less.
Or if the person who bought the cue was famous and then you just happened to get your hands on it.

No new production cues.

The best is buying a used cue and let someone else take the hit.

I bought a Troy Downey cue in perfect shape used for $400.00.
On Mueller's website it's $975.00 new.
I don't know if you would consider a Downey a custom or production cue but I'm real happy with the cue and what I paid for it.

I like the Schon Cues too. I also like the Pechauer cues.. they too are quality cues. If you buy a used Schon or Pechauer & take care of it.... you will still have some salable merchandise.

I think there's a nice looking used Schon on here for $425. Search Schon and you will see it. Others will know the value better than I do, but it looks like a nice cue.

I agree with the used cue thought. I always buy used. Make sure you test hit and inspect well. I try to buy for 1/3 retail and normally expect to get 1/2 retail when selling. Always a market for a a few brands. I try to stick to predator, joss, and McDermott myself but other good options out there.

Keep an eye on the classifieds.

Have you seen one double in price like BNall's bocote plunger?

Nope, but don't think those are still under 500.

Your cues usually gain some value the day you deliver them. I don't know your current pricing, but of course your cues don't sell much on the used market. Wish I still had the few cues of yours I've owned, along with one Mason.

In the price range of 500, I think it is hard to get hurt on a schon. Not going to go up in value, but not going to lose much either.

Just because I was treated beyond expectations, I wanna put in my experience.

Leon Sly. Not sure he's making many $500 cues anymore. Not too long ago got a quick, easy, no BS bit more than a sneaky, for very little over $500.

I don't post much, and not here to advertise for him - just saying my experience, and the cues I own from him are A+++. Can't see them going down in value.
