What do you do if you catch someone cheating???

I'm playing someone $20/game (8ball). I'm up on him 8 games. I collect after each game. I found it wierd that I miscued 2 times in the same game, so I start watching him closely. I caught him wetting the chalk. I called him out on it. Put my sticks away and refused to pay him for the last game. My question isn't limited to wetting the chalk but any form of cheating.

good question

Maybe you should have switched chalk and worked a few more games while keeping a close eye on him. Can't argue with what you did though.

My reaction differs depending upon circumstances. Namely his friend ratio to mine. If I am in a strange place or visiting and I am in their regular pool room, what you did seems appropriate.

However, If I am in my home room or somewhere I know the regulars/owners, I will call them out loud and clear on it, I will make sure everyone knows what he was doing and deal with it accordingly.

I have caught a guy trying to move the game marker on the table before and I called him out on it. I have also had a guy make a blatently horrible hit and try to tell me it was good. Just two examples out of many, unfortunately there are a lot of shady people out there and you can't always expect a "honest, gentlemens" game.

First of all, I don't share chalk. That's just me. I don't share powder, tip tools, or anything else that can walk away or be tampered with.

As far as your question, I would have just kept a piece of chalk in my pocket and used that. You're up 8 games, and he obviously can't beat you. He knows that. He's resorting to BS like wetting the chalk, and it shows that he's desperate. People do some really stupid things and they make some really stupid choices when they act out of desperation. IMO, you had him right where you wanted him. So I'd have just kept him on the line until he tapped out. Why not?

Maybe it tastes like blueberries.

Should have picked your nose in front of him and wiped a nice boog on the chalk. That would have stopped him.

I would have quit on him the moment I found out. I have a very low tolerance for cheating. The guy is obviously a lowlife and if he resorts to things like that, who knows where he got the money to pay you for the previous games. He might be paying you with his family's food money or money he stole from someone. Its better to have nothing to do with those kinds of people even if they have money to be won.

I agree. I would have stopped playing as well. I might have said something to the tune of, "How does the inside of the chalk cube get wet ?" loud enough for people to hear me.
But I've had time to think about my answer. I would have done the same thing as J Soto did at that moment.

As far as any other sort of cheating, like an obvious bad hit that the opponent says is good, or things of that nature ? Blatant and outright cheating ? I subscribe to the Patrick Swayze Road House method.

in your case I would bring another chalk from my own case, and whenever my turn is finished, I would take that chalk with me and keep it in my hands for my next inning, to take more money from him ;).

but in any other senario I would call it out, well, it depends on the situation.

maybe it is too early, but what happens when you wet the chaulk? and how was he wetting it? late night so i am a little stupified this morning.

Wet tip = miscue.

IMO, Blackjack had the perfect answer, however, J soto, your reaction was also an excellent way to deal with the cheater.

Not really sure if I would have been triple motivated to squeeze him for every last nickel in his pockets or if I simply wouldn't want to be near him another second.

Unfortunately, you were in an "away" room so the purists would say you must forego the kick him in his nuts response.

Chalk wetting is punishable by death in certain parts of Malaysia, as well as the Upper and Lower Antilles.
In Pago Pago your first born child is taken, raised by the state, then trained to drive a pedi-cab upon reaching his fifteenth birthday.
In western China a chalk wetter is forced to work in a noodle factory until the age of seventy-three at which time they are given a gold watch and then summarily shot.
Although extreme, I support these, and any other measures that in some small way might help eradicate the Chalk Wetter from poolrooms across the globe. Thank you. :)

definitely one of those depends answers

You extended the question to all cheating and the answer to that is it depends. When I was younger I often met the cheaters halfway, cheating as bad or worse than they did. Sometimes I just acting like I had cheated when they couldn't see and kept on shooting. Sometimes I tried to see how many front teeth I could take out with one shot and sometimes I snapped a house cue and boogied for the front door after my next win and collection. All depended on the situation. I might ignore small cheats if it was just slowing down how fast I busted somebody but they were going to stay with me until they busted anyway.

In the seventies and eighties I was most inclined to fight fire with fire meeting cheat with cheat and if things got rough the law was rarely called. Snapping a house cue brought it down to a working length and usually left a nasty point on one end. I kept a twenty in my shirt pocket to throw on the bar or counter as I left and that was more than enough to cover the cost of a house cue back then so I could usually come back to the same place a few weeks or months later.

Never play them again. I stop playing right then. Not one more shot. If I am 100% I just refuse to play with them. What for???
