What happened to Howard Vickery

In defense of Jay, he is getting old...
Jay may seem OK, but subconsciously he still sees Howard Vickery as a touring pro.
Like so many older players, Jay is still living in the 90's.
I've seen this before, very sad

Hey! I resemble that remark.
Or is it the 80s? Hell I'm confused. :scratchhead:

Well, now I know. It looks like he did six years and is out on probation. He used to be a friend of mine and was well liked on the pool tour. He never gave any indication of any perverse behavior at any tournaments I worked, but the only person who really hung out with Howard was Mike Lebron. In hindsight I never knew Howard to have a girl friend, although I'm pretty sure he had a wife back in Ohio but I never saw her at any tourneys.

True, I was curious about whether he was still in prison. I knew he had a gotten a fairly long sentence. As I recall now, someone may have told me he made a plea deal to avoid the possibility of getting a longer sentence. Unlike some of you I'm not so quick to condemn someone. I do know that people have gone to prison on trumped up charges of child molestation after stories have been coerced from kids under duress. Look up the McMartin trial if you don't believe me. That turned out to be totally false accusations that ruined an entire family. And they weren't the only ones.

My buddy Amarillo Slim was also charged but never convicted for similar offenses. His daughter later recounted her testimony, saying she had been pressured into making accusations against him. I talked to him about it years later and he said the sheriff was out to get him because Slim had outsmarted him in the past in an unrelated matter.

I met Howard a couple times. Always liked him.
Not gonna pass judgement on him. The courts already did that. He served his time.

But i will say one thing.
Knowing PLENTY of people that works with kids.

Trust me, all it takes is one kid who's mad that they didn't get the toy they wanted, that day, and you are up a creek.
Seen more than one person get thrown under the bus by some kid with an agenda or who wanted attention.

That's not saying anything about Howard.
But that's the truth of what can happen when kids are involved.

He got out of jail a little while back but never comes around.
I heard he had a heart attack and was in pretty bad shape.

Believe it or not, it won't be long before some idiot comes on here and says how dare you judge, we have all done things wrong in our life, blah blah blah.

I can't believe his sentence was only 7 years. I think here in FL it would have been 15+.

What was he chaged with, I didn't read that in the paperwork?

I remember when Howard Vickery won the 1999 Senior U.S. Open down in French Lick, Indiana. I remember Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Jose Parica, Martin Rimlinger, and others participated in this event.

I don't remember who the runner up was though. Does anybody recall?

I looked it up:

1. Howard Vickery
2. Cliff Thorburn
3. Grady Mathews
4. Claude Bernatchez
5/6. Nick Varner
5/6. Jose Parica

Glen,
Ghost Ball posted a thread two posts ahead of yours.. I saw the thread long ago. 3rd degree felony involving a family member defined as a child. In the thread they say in Ohio child is under 12.

In the 70s, my favorite out of Columbus was The Truckdriver...Howard, not so much.
the locals rated Kenny just as good.

apologies for minor hijack...

IMHO - Howard would not have gambled with Kenny if you held TWO guns to his head:)

Howard was more the tournament grinder - Kenny was thought to be the much better player,
and, oh yes, he worked a J-O-B.

AtLarge,
Thanks, much appreciated!

By the way, where did you find it? I googled and Yahoo'd it but couldn't find any results.

I don't mind hearing that .
I only spoke to him briefly....late 70s....I like the man.

a player asked him how to hit a certain shot....
...Kenny says "You gotta THUNK it."

This was a post in the thread link earlier in this thread (Post #25 from "ghost ball). I believe the post below was post #101 from 1/27/2010)

Gross sexual imposition was his charge i believe. I googled it and looked at yahoo and it gives the #1 answer voted by people. I was thinking maybe someone on here could look that up and explain it. It looks like gross sexual imposition is a different charge.

Howard did play Kenny several times for money, it was almost always someone else's money though.
I don't think he ever won a session.
One time he was shooting the game ball straight in from 2 1/2 feet away to finally win a set from Kenny.
He got amped up and hit it so hard it went in the pocket and straight back out and sat on the lip .
Kenny jumped out of his chair and rolled it in.

Thanks book.

Thanks book.

It was really odd but I used to play both of them long ago , Kenny was ultra cautious, he had to see someone who's game he knew and could beat ,smash you, before he would give up a spot at all.
Howard would beat me with a spot by grinding and out moving me, and Kenny would run over to pick my carcass with the same spot, and I would beat him because he tried to shoot his way out of everything.
Perfect example of styles making games .

An excellent description...

Perhaps that is why Kenny had the reputation as the better player.

He certainly was thought to be capable of beating any human... when he was on.

Reminds me of Bobby Leggs when I was in Maryland.
