old cues

i dont want to sound like an a hole, but if you dont like what is posted dont look at it. View what you only think you would enjoy and find useful and bypass the other threads.

One of my favorite things about getting a new cue is showing it to people and sharing it. I look forward to posting my acquisitions and seeing people's responses. I posted a big Balabushka, that hadn't been seen before and I was told that it would diminish its value to post the pictures. O' Well. If thats true then thats sad. I am expecting delivery of some spectacular cues soon and for what its worth I do plan to take pictures and post them. To the OP, your collection and pictures have inspired my collection, please keep posting your new cues, and I will do the same. To the cue makers involved in the drama in this thread, I don't get it. Its a small industry you guys should co-operate to promote yourself's and your colleagues work. When an established cue maker compliments the work of a new cue maker, it puts that new maker on my radar and I will look to buy their cues. The established master cue makers already have such long waiting lists, they have nothing to lose by helping someone newer. Also, wether its in this gallery or another area, I love progress pics of cues being built and the finished pics of that cue.

I guess that's where we differ. I think the long thread is great. It shows me where the maker started and how far they have come.

I really like seeing cuemakers older stuff vs their newer stuff. I'll use Ron Haley as an example . Look at the cue in the wanted for sale right now that was made in 1997 . Rounded inlays not a very exciting cue. Fast forward 15years . Sharp points and corners on everything, beautiful flowing artistic color and inlay layouts, Mitered boxes so tight that you can barely see the joint with a jewelers glass. It's cool see where we've been and how far we have come.

I never thought of it in an historical perspective and a chronicle of evolution.

I would agree. This used to be a site for pretty much high end custom cues. Now you have all the production stuff watering things down. Since everyone else is being politically correct I'll say it to all those reading. Nobody gives two craps about production stuff here . I think at the very least it should be put in its own section . I also am not a huge fan of I want to trade my (insert non- pool related item here) for a Szam, Gina or whatever

Saying "nobody" is where I absolutely believe you're wrong...because I do...and I believe many others do as well! Personally, I like to see the cues that people are proud of, whether they're production or custom...I think you have an "elitist" attitude that keeps people from posting cues in this Cue & Case Gallery...you might want to take note it's not entitled "Gallery for Cues of the Wealthy Elite".

This isn't the W/FS section in which it's inundated on a daily basis where you have to go to page 20 just to see what was posted this morning! There's plenty of room for posts of "cheap" production cues right alongside with the works of art that the VAST MAJORITY of people on this site CANNOT afford...so we drool...and dream...and post pictures of our production cues of which we're proud...

Going back to the original question of this thread, finding the answer is easy...
Just look at the main Cue and Case Gallery views and replies. You get 500 views and 10 people respond. Who would care about taking the time to show people cues if they don't appreciate and acknowledge seeing them......
The only time I see a lot of responses 99% of the time it is a negative thread...

Hear Hear!!! I completely agree with this logic...I think you hit one of the big nails right on the head!

I try very hard to make a positive comment...or at least a thank-you when people post something in the gallery...in fact, that's probably where the main brunt of my posts are located! :p

1 i like long posts with pics if they ho;d my attention

2 cue builders should have a spot so everyone stays happy

3 man what a fight. I think Rick won every round without any BS. If your attacked and don't jump up, what good are you.

I think every cue maker should start their own thread showcasing what they build . The Jeff Olney thread is a great example of this. I check it frequently to see the latest creations. Jeffs thread has a great positive feel to it and has many views. It also helps consolidate a makers work into one area so that when I want to order a cue I can look back a pictures and say I want wood like the cue in post # , rings like the cue in post #, And a wrap like on post #.

JMO.

I really like this idea also.

However, what happens when we every new "builder" creates their own cuemaker thread? Wonder if the consensus will then be that too many veteran builders get bumped to page 2 or 3 in the Gallery! Maybe there could be more sticky's for veteran builders? Just an idea...

I think all you would have to do is contact the Mod's and ask for sticky, I also think it would be a good idea. Thats what I did back in 2007 when I started the thread about forum members who build cues to post photo's of them.

We have several large collectors that post here and it could be really great. I would say to keep the thread pretty only collectors with 12+ cues in this section.

That honestly would be a pretty dead thread as far as how often postings are made. How often do you see those people post? Tikkler shows more (the most frequent), and it is always nice to see his cues. And what does the amount of cues have to do with anything? I know a few with high dollar Bushka's (some of the most inlayed and original I have seen) and Gus cues, would you not want to not see their cues just because they may not have over 12 cues? How do you know how many people have?

What distinguishes a "pretty" only cue, you?

I agree. I used to always post a new addition to my collection which I really enjoyed sharing but I have backed off as late.

I posted a big Balabushka, that hadn't been seen before and I was told that it would diminish its value to post the pictures.

I do not see where that would have any bearing on a cues value, if the buyer is on the right side of sane anyways... Van Gogh's, Picasso's, Pollock's are seen all over the world, I do not see those going down in value because people photograph them... Actually they only go up as more people see and want them, even more.
I liked the cues you speak of btw. I have not seen one of George's I have not liked yet and probably never will...

Really? Nobody?
I disagree.

A heck of a lot of people are interested in such things, and not just the cues but the very rich history surrounding them and the great cue makers involved.

In no particular order:
Jim McDermott
Dan Janes
Bill Stroud
Richard Helmstetter
Bob Meucci
Gordon Hart
Ricco Cervantes
Eugene Balner
Abe Rich
Saul Rich
And many, many more......

Yes, I want to see their work here.

I understand Steves side when it comes to this section, we cannot changed the reality that everyone starts as a newbie, and for a fact that Az is good way for showcasing new talents, most of my time when i visited Az, spent on the Cue Gallery, and i really enjoying new works and gems specially those cues from collectors that was showcase, i think Chris nailed it when it comes to posting the new works for cuemakers, The Jeff thread is also a good idea, those ways will help to lessen what Steve perceives on this section. Hope everyone will have a satisfying solution to this one..

more powers to all,
Al

Why not use the place that is already set up to show your cues.
Use the sticky thread that is at the top of the forum. Not one AZ cuemaker has posted a picture of their cues in a month and a half. That way it will not disappear. People will know if the cue is in that thread that it is made by an AZer. I suggest we use what we were given for that purpose.

C'mon Dammit!...when is someone gonna post a pic of a cue!!!! ;)

OK since you asked here is a cue that I purchased Monday from a gentleman who came into my Pool Hall. I have since refinished it and with the help of another forum member "Chris Online" it has been identified as a Model M3 which was part of a limited number of cues build for a short time in 1988 known as the 88 Series by Meucci. The cue is all original except for the bumper and the color of the wrap which was originally Black. During the refinish I decided not to clear over the wrap because I do not like wraps prepared that way, if I every sell the cue I can do that at time if the customer wants it done. The cues shaft is still 13mm and perfectly straight along with the cues butt, so over all this is a nice example of Meucci's earlier work. This is really a nice cue and I am not a big fan of Meucci cues, and best of all I like the way the cues hits:smile:

its a 88-3, according to the picture from budget cues it has m-10 written by hand next to it.. they must have made it from 88 to 93, because i have some local friends that have it in both logo's.. and they both seem to be made the same as the originals construction with quality materials..

Disappearing picture problems

It has nothing to do with cue maker putting pictures of work they are doing for spec. It is a problem if they are posting picture's of a customer's cue with out permission, but that doesn't seem likely if they want to keep a client. The problem I see is people taking other peoples pictures and using them in their own posts.I've seen this many times with my pictures and as a result I am not interested in posting pictures of all the new cues I've been collecting. As a matter of fact that is how I found out about AZ, someone got the pictures of my cue and was posting them on here and the late Mike Cochran called me and said I better check it out.So here I am.

Eric

It is so nice to be a newby and simply be thrilled to see all photos of sticks.

(I will never understand that grey wash thing.)
