What have people been flat out wrong about?

So every once in a while I'll run into a guy who's misinformed about some aspect of the game, be it a rule or equipment. Today I ran into a guy who thought his older Lishan cue, with an irish linen wrap, actually had a lizard skin wrap on it instead. I politely told him that no, his wrap wasn't made from a lizard, but that it was a very nice wrap none the less. The wrap itself was very compact and had a patina over it from years of use.

I can't say one way or the other if people are misinformed or not, because I'm far from being an expert, but one of my pet peeves is the "This cue is better than that cue" debate. In my opinion any cue is fine as long as you are comfortable with it. There may be cues that you don't like the feel of but that doesn't make that a bad cue. The only reason you won't shoot well with it is a mental block focusing on that "POS" cue rather than your game.

I had a guy swear up and down that his titanium cue was better than any wood cue out there because it was TITANIUM. I didnt know wether to laugh or cry. I just walked away.

BTW the cue was a walmart "titanium" cue.

Most anything that comes from the mouths of our local inbred league players
is downright laughable when it comes to Pool and the Rules governing play.

The #1 misconception I run into:

For whatever reason, most bangers believe that ball in hand is ALWAYS in the kitchen.

Drives. Me. Bananas.

unsure rule question

one question that i have that i get different answers on is when a object is knocked off the table. if he drives his own off its spotted and if it was mine it gets pocketed? also is it ball in hand to the incoming player? thanks

I agree with this one. That drives me nuts.

Others I have heard or seen:

1. There is a youtube video that was posted on here where a guy was teaching how to play "draw". He said that it was called "draw" because once you strike the cue ball you quickly draw the cue back.

2. I was having a leisurely conversation with 2 guys who have played their fair share of bar room pool, and both said they were pretty good. While talking about difficult parts of the game, one of them said that it was hard to play position for a ball on the rail, because you had to try and leave the cb on the rail. When I asked why he would want to leave the cb on the rail, he said he always wanted as straight a shot as possible. I politetly said, "oh, I always thought you wanted to play angles for position to the next ball". The other gentleman then piped up as if he was teaching me something (not to say that I don't have a whole lot to learn)and said, no you always want to be as straight as possible. If you want to move the ball back and to the side, you just hit low left, or low right and it will go that way. I simply nodded my head to avoid an argument.

3. I have 2 brother-in-laws that refuse to believe that either the ob or cb has to touch a rail after the cb contacts the ob.

4. I had someone call a foul on a friend of mine for adjusting the cb position with his cue when he had BIH. He said that was the rules. I have never personally seen that rule, but thought it must have come from somewhere.

Definately BIH. His does get spotted. Yours does not get pocketed.

I had a good one last week.

I ran a pool tournament as part of the Med Group sports day. Normally to bars and such and I don't bring my Benders, but since this was at the base community center, I thought it would be fine. So during my first game, I use my Bender j/b to break with and go over to switch to my playing Bender. One guy says "you have a seperate cue to break with??", well Mr. Know it All says "yeah, most people do. Since everyone has screw in tips on their playing cue you don't want to break with those, you should only break with cues with glue on tips as they're cheaper." I just smiled and thought to myself "What would Mike Bender do if I put screw in tips on one of his top cues?? And how bad would the guys on AZ harrass me". I was going to correct him, but then sometimes it's better to just smile

Playing in the backwoods bars at times you will find all kind of messed up rules they live by.

One place I found that you had to call not only the ball and pocket but the rails as well. If you happen to rattle the ball in the pocket and it falls ... you had to call the rails lmao.... I was stunned.

Im sure everyone has encountered this one....

Ever talk to someone that doesn't know you shoot pool because he doesn't lol. They always have a friend who is the best the town has ever seen. I been in action in my city for 21 years and never heard of the guy.... he couldn't play dead in a western. Hilarious.

If the cue ball is on the rail, you can move it our the same distance as the butt of your cue!

Actually.....they're right, so long as the object ball is pocketed. However, I'll assume you knew that. LOL.

My opponent telling me all about his genuine Balabushka worth thousands as he points to the signature on his Adams Balabushka and says 'see, its genuine'
I nodded and complimented him on his beautiful cue, he was oblivious to the fact that I was playing with a Joss West worth about 7 times what his cue was worth.

The ABSOLUTE one thing that ddrives me CRAZY is when a banger starts to give me or anyone else advice on how to play.

I laugh my ass off!!!!!

:D

Yes exactly!! One time I went out with a girl that i just met, we played pool with her friends and they were trying to give me tips... lol i loved it!
