What is meant by a "box" cue?

I've read this term thrown around quite often here but I cannot for the life of me find out what it means and the search function doesn't allow 3 letter words. Thanks

Floating box shape inlays, instead of points.

The form was invented by Ernie Gutierrez, Ginacue. The first was made for Ed Kelly in 1969. Here's Ed and the cue:

Heres another example of a box cue. Like the above posters stated, a box cue is a cue with inlaid boxes instead of traditional points. This cue has boxes inlaid on top of boxes for a total of 18 boxes between the forearm and butt sleeve.

Here is another example of a box cue that Bob Owen created...

Here's a few Ginacues from Will Prout's fabulous collection. The Ed Kelly box cue is the 3rd from the right:

Wow, fantastic replies guys. Thank you very much. Love the pics as well. Really helps me understand better.

Ernie Gutierrez conceived the design in conjunction with Ed Kelly. Many cuemakers copied it. That cue last sold for $13,000 or so. Ed told me he sold it for $500.

Actually a very interesting story about how that cue ended up with the current owner. Interesting as it really illustrates the nature of collecting.

I can get that Ed recalled the design being in "conjunction". I wonder if Ernie remembers it that way?

That ringwork looks mighty familiar...cool cue

I'm not into cues as much as some of you are on here so even though I've played the game for a long time I don't think I've ever seen that style before. I dig it. I've always liked floating points anyway, and I think I like those boxes even more.

I don't think it's likely that anyone would just say, "design a cue for me, I'll take whatever you come up with". Would you do that?

I've bought maybe 40 cues from Ernie and my personal collaboration has pretty much been confined to saying "wow" or "thank you" or "great idea". I wasn't really saying much about how the first box cue was designed as I was about the way it is working with a master craftsman genius engineer artist. If Beethoven was composing a symphony for me I wouldn't really be saying a lot of "try C Minor".

For all I know, Ed drew schematics and explained the concept of the innovation of building boxes in a cue to Ernie who was taking notes, but I am willing to bet it didn't go down that way.
