I was just wondering what the general consensus is on the subject. I am having a cue made with 3-8x11 and wondering how that is

That's very subjective. Personally I like the Radial Pins but the 3/8 x 11 is also a great pin. It's hard to find fault with any of them. They all tighten the shaft to the butt which is all that's expected of them. About the only one I actually dislike is the Uni-Lock quick connect. It's just an overpriced gimmick that tends to loosen up in play and sometimes if it gets even the smallest amount dirt in the connection it can lock up.

My favorite is the Uni-Loc Radial joint. It is solid, screws directly into wood for that nice wood to wood feeling, and it stays tight and buzz free. It's available in
aluminum, brass, stainless steel, and titanium, the choice of material used depends on the balance (forward or rear-weighted) desired. Having said that, 3/8x11 and 3/8x10 joints are also excellent choices.

BTW, I agree with Cuesmith about the Uni-Loc quick release joint. It tends to get loose. That's distracting and doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence.

You say joint?

I like a 5/16x14 Stainless Steel joint myself.
But you can't go wrong with big pin 3/8x11 or Radials at all. I'm sure you'll be very happy with your choice.

btw.. you must be a Pearl Jam fan. My friend's license plate on his 67' Mustang Fastback was 'Evnflo'.

I used to play with a variety of steel joints with various pin sizes but IMO nothing I have tried so far hits better than a radial pin with a wood facing. Once again IMO,my Daytons hit better than any of the Pechauer,Schon,or Joss cues I have owned. But that's just my 2 cents.

Lol. What state. That's my license plate in Alabama

I prefer any type of big pin. Although, I am sure that if blindfolded, I would not be able to tell the difference between any joint.

There is nothing wrong with any of them. The two most popular, I think, are the 5/16 inch-14 pin in a stainless steel joint, and the 3/8 inch-10 pin surrounded by wood. The latter is my current preference primarily because I like the feel of the wood to wood hit. :)

You, me & the rest of the honest world

thanks for saying this.

You will not find many people that will admit to it.

There is no "best" answer because everyone is going to tell you something they prefer. All the materials used to build the cue come into play whether it is the material of the pin(stainless, titanium, G10 etc), the material of the joint collar(wood, Ivory, stainless, G10, phenolic etc), what kind of shaft, or the material used to construct the main body of the cue itself. The material used changes the "feel" or the "hit" of the cue. It is all in what feels good to you. I myself like a stainless flat faced 3/8x10 or 11 with an Ivory joint, but it doesn't mean you will. If it just the pin design you are after, they ALL screw the butt to the shaft effectively. If I were you, ask some people at the local hall/bar to let you hit a few balls with their cue and decide for yourself. Like said above. If you screwed it together with your eyes closed the only difference you may feel is with a Uni-loc just because it takes less turns...

Of the cues I have now, my favorite is 3/8 x 11 brass pin with wood/wood joint face.

However, I have just ordered Chuck Starkey conversion with 1/2 x 8 wood pin. I am thinking that will be favorite of mine, but time will tell.

Depending on the weight of the spliff, you may want more forward weight or not. Your balance point will also be affected, and different joint materials will also have different sounds. Its kinda like asking whats the best truck when you've never owned one, or is the blonde headed barbimbo better than the freckle faced, light skinned redhead that just walked in.
Best joint, Hard Times Bellflower CA or Romines in Milwaukee.
