I guess it sounds like you can get hustled, or sharked by a pool person. You put the title on them! Pool hustler or pool shark? What is the difference? Thanks.

A hustler is someone that downplays his/her game in order to ensure his/her chance of beating you out of money one way or the other. It doesn't have to involve just pool either.

A shark is someone who waits and watches for someone he/she can beat. They sit there and clock everyones' game and then pick the ones they know they can beat.

At least that's my take. Not a whole lot of difference.

hustler= you think you can still beat him.
the shark= you realize real quick that you have no chance

A hustler has gears a shark thinks he plays good when in reality he's just a minnow.People who actually dont play pool have created this word pool shark because they dont have a clue on what there talking about.:D

I always thought a pool shark was just a moron who tried to win by pulling cheap tricks (for example, if an opponent was talking to me while I was down on a shot I'd consider that sharking)

only my opinion

Hustler - someone who has an above average game who will try to match up to somebody with less skills.

Pool Shark - Usually somebody who knows very little about pool Calling somebody who plays pool a pool shark. (Wow you play pool are you a pool shark?)

This is my take as well, but I think the term shark is given to a good player by a novice. I don't hear any good players saying anyone is a shark.

Sharking on the other hand is like Aten said, using dirty tactics to distract or break the rhythm of your opponent.

When I think of a 'pool shark'....I see a gangsta...he's a bit vain and
when he walks into a pool hall, he wants to be known as 'the man'.

The 'pool hustler' might be the guy in the corner wearing overalls and
looking like he just recently figured out which end of the cue to use.

In the movie The Hustler...Paul Newman was the hustler on his way to
being the shark.
Jackie Gleason was the shark.

imo

Good, fun question

Take it ( it, being my opinion) from someone who's had a lot of experience. As someone already mentioned "shark", when used in the term of distracting people is standard in the industry. "Sharked me? The guy oughtta play in a wax museum. Then, if somebody moves, I'd screw outta town" Minnesota Fats. "Shark", used as a noun, is strictly an amateurs term.

"Hustler" is a general term for anyone who scrambles to get anything " Things come to those who wait, but only things left behind by those who hustle" Benjamin Franklin. But when used for pool, "hustler" can be broken into three catagories: "Gunfighters", the guys who walk in and rough hustle a place..."Got any fifty dollar 9 ball players?" They're wililng to take on the best instead of wasting time. Next you have "Bushwackers", who lay in wait for the weaker players and usually hustle the nuts. ( I wish people would quit calling me that). Lastly you have "Hatchetmen". A hatchetman isn't above stalling against weaker players, even getting a spot when they don't need one. But, before a hatchetman leaves, he dusts the better players, as well. I traveled a lot with U.J. Puckett and Eddie Taylor. Puckett, with his various disguises, was probably the best Bushwhacker of all times and Eddie was pure Hatchetman. It's all in my book.
Keep it nice. Alfie

My screen handle came from other people who were always complementing me by calling me a pool shark, as in "I'm a good player."

From the Urban Dictionary:
3. pool shark

A person who plays a really good game of pool

This is what it used to mean.A shark was a person that came in struttin thier stuff with the fancy cue and fancy case. Also he's a good player that wins a lot.Hence "pool shark" you also have the card sharks which would mean the same thing to a card player.(good card player) That's all "shark" means, nothing more.

A hustler was just that..a hustler went around laying down lemons (losing on purpose) and then when the time was right he would win the $.

"sharking" now this a is whole nother thing. This means moving or making a noise, something to that effect while their opp is at the table trying to shoot. This is what sharking means and the only thing it means. This is all just MHO however, but I think It's right.I have noticed lately that alot of ole pool words are being a bit miss used around here but that's ok. A hustler tries to rob you and a pool shark is just a good player.

from day one, public pool & billiards has always suffered from seedy characters out to 'hustle' or scam someone. not simply because a "bet" was placed on a game - but because the hustler dupes or deceives his opponent.

ironically, these hustlers were once known as "sharps" , not sharks.
