What is The GRAND Tour? [AMA]

I hope this takes off.

So you went to U Can't Finish. Jk lol.
I know alot of people that either went there or are going there currently.

To illustrate,

Hope this helps. Will be continuing this AMA through a tournament I'm playing in tonight. You all can follow us on Twitter @GrandTourPromo. I'll be checking back here periodically to answer questions. Try to keep them very specific, and I'll offer very specific answers as best I can.

I'll continue to answer questions in this thread today and more in the coming weeks as we move forward with The GRAND Tour ...
Please answer my question above about the division of money.

The reason I ask is that there was someone else on here recently who was promoting a new kind of event. It was said to be interesting to all levels of players. A little arithmetic showed that he was raking off about 50% of the entry fees for himself. That seemed excessive to me.

I agree, that is excessive. I don't know how much demand there could have been for such a system, although I'm not often surprised to find people will fall for such a thing.

Our prize pools will be generated by selling the tickets to pool halls and leagues of all sizes. We are also selling to weekly tournament directors, cue services, instructors, and anyone looking to support pool players in the most general sense.

I myself am a player first and always will be. I'm not going to be able to participate in GTP events, for obvious reasons, but I will tell you that Grand Tour Promotions is only going to put on events that I personally would want to be involved in.

As for the division of money, we will be earning our revenues through the sale of advertising and marketing of our sponsors.

Earlier you mentioned $4000 as an amount that we'd have to raise to put on these events. That was exactly the amount we came to as well. It's a goal that we won't have to reach for our first events, but one we hope won't be too unreasonable as we move forward.

We will not be breaking even any time soon. We are ok with that. It's part of any new business. The players and our sponsors can be certain that we will be keeping our expenses to a minimum, so as to ensure that we are as well equipped to bring the best we can, time and again.

Long response I know, but I think the question you raised is an important one, and deserved a complete answer.

Please feel free to follow up with more if you have any other questions, or if you feel I haven't answered your question to your satisfaction.

Best of luck with your tour. I look forward with great anticipation to the event making it's way west. Please - sooner rather than later

Thank you for your support. We too would like to expand, and the sooner the better, we agree. For now our focus is putting on GTP 1, our inaugural event. Our progress can be followed best on the website(link below.).

I hope to make it back your way soon. I've been lucky enough to make it to Colorado once and hope I can bring The GRAND Tour with me when I return.

I have to admit after the intial post I sort of shook my head - thinking that this would be just another pool tour that doesn't work out.

Then I kept reading. It's a very interesting idea and you have really impressed me with all of your replies.

Now I will not be surprised if this works out.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your support. I understand your initial reaction. We scratched our heads in doubt for a minute or two as well. But only for a minute or two.

We are now 100% determined to make this a reality, and we certainly don't mind waiting a little while to make it work well. I've been playing 15 years now, myself. We believe it's a long time coming, but hope it won't be long before everyone starts expecting more from us. All we ask is...

"Expect more from The GRAND Tour."

One very simple question: Who are you? What is your name?

:). Thank you for your question.

My name is Robert Bowman, President of Grand Tour Promotions.

I'm an amateur pool player, but recently I've diverted my attention to the need for my local rooms and tournaments to be promoted in a way that even the smallest among them can afford.

OK, I see in your example payout on your website that you might pay out a total of $1850 in cash prizes to the 8 people who are drawn to play in the tournament. What is the total value of raffle tickets you plan to sell for such an event? $4000? Roughly what volume of sales would a billiard retailer have to see before he gave $10 worth of raffle tickets to a customer? $1000?

Perhaps your plans haven't crystallized to the point that you can answer such questions, but anyone you try to sell raffle tickets to is likely to ask them.

This is kinda what I was thinking.

I would have to consider my odds on winning the raffle. My concern would be that I would drop around 20 bucks for a chance to enter the tournament and not get in. For a one time thing it wouldn't bother me but after 5 or 6 times of not winning a spot in the raffle I would probably give up.

I like the idea for the most part and I hope it works out for you. Keep us updated on how it works out.

Thank you for your support. You raise an excellent point and I have a rather long winded response. I promise I'll learn to post shorter before I reach 100 posts.

We're going to encourage all players not to overdo it on the trying to 'stack' the raffle. We hope the small value of each ticket is not the reason people are trying to earn them. It's about letting everyone participate in whatever way they choose and can responsibly afford.

Remember our intention is for these tickets to be given as a reward to players who are already supporting their local rooms, leagues, and tournaments. The GRAND Tour is mainly there to give the lucky winners something to talk about and hopefully attract some new players to the game.

In your case, we'd hope you wouldn't stop playing pool altogether simply because there wasn't any money in it for you. It's certainly not why I've played the game all these years. (I'm not that good.)

There have been times though when I couldn't afford to buy myself into the $10 weekly tournaments everyday. I simply cut back to fewer days per week. I definetly would've saved money if I had just quit altogether. But I've never seriously considered such a response to the hard times I've faced. I love the game too much to quit.

I like the idea and hope it works. Have you talked to CJ Wiley about it?

Thank you for your support. I'm really new to these forums and I recognize the name just from browsing around the last few weeks. But I can't say that I've spoken with CJ yet. If you'd like to point him my way, I'm very open to speaking with anyone who's interested.

I really like this thread, and thank you for bringing it into this conversation.

There are many points in there that need some attention. Chief among them is that pool needs to be fun for everyone involved. If the growth that we'd like for pool to experience is to happen we must emphasize this.

I believe it's the best thing pool has going for it. It certainly can and should be fun for all.

I won't be answering questions for a while. I've just received news that the owner of Park Avenue Billiards has just passed in car wreck and I'm just too hurt to talk about this right now. I'll be back after I've had some time. Thank you.

I just meant if I gave up 100 bucks or so over the course of a month trying to get into the tournament I would probably look for another tournament, not quit pool all together!

I like the idea, and I think if people go about it correctly it could be a great thing. I wish we had something like this in our area. Best of luck to you and your tournament, sorry to hear about your loss.
