What kind of cue is this?

WOW, no pleasing some people. Cue was taken in trade and just thrown in the pile.

And you should see this guy's pile of cues.
Robin was selling cues and doing repair work when I moved to Corpus Christi texas in 1975.
Back then Robin also had a very strong stroke and he taught many players down here the fine art of racking.

I am not going to take sides here because I like both you guys and dont know squat about the item in question.

I would love to see Robin start posting his speeches and I am sure it would be interesting reading and might start some lively debates.

Robin Adair has a LOT of pool history in his head and it would be nice to get it written down for future generations.
I love visiting his shop and hearing his stories about the way things were and the things he experienced when he was Mr Texas Express.

WOW, no pleasing some people. Cue was taken in trade and just thrown in the pile. AND, I have been doing repairs since 1972. Maybe we have never met, or you may have never heard of me. But I assure you, since the advent of the internet, more bad info about cues has made it to more players than at any time in history. While there is some good info to be had, it has to be carefully sifted through, to weed out the BS and just outright guessing.
I try to avoid the pissing contests and the flame wars, but I get asked every day to confirm something that someone has read on the internet, and people from all over the country call me to verify cues and values.
As for my so called "boasting", all I can say is, I am from Texas, it is the law.
I have several speeches I used to give at tournaments about the billiard industry as a whole, exposing the dark underbelly of the beast, and you Manwon may have inspired me to start a series of lectures. Whether that happens or not depends on my laziness, or my love/hate of the sport.

Well thank you very much Robin, I love being inspirational!!!!!!!!!!!:D But either way, I would love to hear your lectures. One thing I have learned through the years is that information comes wrapped many ways and nothing should be over looked until analyzed.

I can only hope you to feel sufficiently motivated to share you knowledge and information with us!!!!!!!

Take care

The veneers seem to be different. The cue talked about in this thread, has alternating veneers & the cue used to compare has folding veneers...

I never said it was false, only that it was a really big statement, if that is true I have no problem becoming a student. The one thing I personally love about this site is all the knowledgable people who share their knowledge here.

Take Care:)

Thank you Cuaba for your support. I am just an OLD guy that has been around the block thousands of times. And thanks again Manwon for getting me off the fence and inspiring me to actually hit the keyboard. I just wish this site was present while we were travelling around the country doing the Tour, we might still be going.
Maybe I should post up some more info on what I have accomplished and done in the last zillion years for all the youngsters that make up the majority of posters. Just a dozen years ago, you could'nt walk into a pool room anywhere in the country, where I didn't have friends or aquaintances. Today there is another generation present and I guess I should continue to contribute something to get my rep built back up.
Thanks again.....

The reason you're cue looks like an early Adam cue, is because it is probably a "National" cue.
This was a cue shop set up by Richard helmstetter. Since this shop was his baby, most of its wares were of his design.
He carried those same designs and techniques forward into his next cue making venture just two years later, Known as "Adam cues" But with one notable difference. They made all of there own blanks. This means no Titlist forearms! as were often seen in the ones he made for National. Other than that, the first line of Adams are more or less just a continuation of what he was doing at national.
Richard was already a cue maker when National asked him to make a line of cues for them. But, it was in this shop that "Ricco" first began to make cues.
As did a few other future cue makers!
Anyway both of the cues i saw in this thread appear to be National cues in my opinion, for what its worth.

Jayman.

I totally agree and this is the biggest problem any cue collector faces!!!

Great Post!!!!!!!:yeah:

I am the guy that took the pics of the cue. My buddy that owns the cue kept saying he thought it was a "Hempsteader" or something. I wasn't familiar with Helmstetter so I never mentioned it to gobrian77 until a few days ago when the first Helmstetter guess surfaced.

Assuming it is indeed a Helmstetter, my buddy's original plan was to refinish and rewrap the cue. The joint is also loosening up and needs attention. He also wanted to get a second shaft made.

The cue has a nice, even patina to it (I haven't been here long enough to know if you use this word to describe cues  ), but this is his only cue and he's been playing with it for 40 years. I think he would still want to go ahead with the restoration unless it was so extraordinarily valueable in its "as is" condition. If it's only a $400-$500 cue he may as well fix it up and play it, IMHO.

That said, who do you guys recommend he contact regarding this type of work?

Thanks, Fred

PS. Sorry for the delayed post...I was waiting a couple of days for my account to get validated.

?????????

If that were my cue an I wanted it restored I would send it to AZB's own Ratcues he is very reasonable an his work is very good. Ryan has restored many cues an his work is excellent, probably half of what some would charge. Hope this helps!!!!!!!
