works ok as a break cue? Is the meteor ok or will it take a dive soon after putting it to use, the reason for the question is I am retired and on a tight income.
Thanks

I have one of the cheapest, bottom-shelf, cues that Cuetec makes and put a White Diamond tip on it to use as a break cue. I think I paid about $65 for the one I bought and it retailed for about $100, or so.

The Lucky cues are the best bang for the buck, 3/8x10 joint and maple shaft, they're as solid as it gets
I just had a G10 tip ferrule combo installed on one and it breaks like a tank

My experience with Lucky cues as break cues, is I broke 2 of them at the joint. The pin and joint collar are on a dowel that goes into a bore in the forearm and is glued in only. No threads, grooves etc.

Played a tournament at the Anchorage Billiard Palace years back. I broke and made a ball, turned around to get my playing cue, and when I turned back to the table, noticed a bunch of debris in the kitchen. Little chunks of wood etc. Everybody starts staring at the ceiling thinking something is about to fall on our heads, but nothing. Get the brush, clean the table and finish the game. Next break, the shaft, still attached to the dowel with the joint pin and collar fly forward across the table, leaving even more debris than the first time.

After we all had a good laugh, I took the cue back to the local store I bought it at. They apologized and gave me a new one. Next weekly tournament, couple matches into the evening the new one broke in half at the same spot, this time the dowel broke out the side of the forearm. I wasnt laughing the second time.

But then again, maybe Im just not lucky.

I've been breaking and playing with the Edge 360 and rear extension for a couple of weeks, and it's overall an outstanding cue that, despite the stock Everest tip, plays as good as any Mezz or Predator... No B.S..

The OP asked about what low end Cuetec to use as a break cue. I use a cheap Cuetec butt and had a bigger shaft made to fit it. The reason I use this Cuetec is because it is the lightest cue that I have.

Not sure what your budget is but for $200 or so - maybe even less - I would assume you could get a low end Cuetec and have a bigger shaft for breaking made for it. Mine is around 13.3mm with a hard tip on it.

Ron,

Do you have a cuemaker in your area? If so, he could probably make you a bigger shaft to fit whatever lower end Cuetec you would buy.

Try to find one of the old Earl Strickland models. You should be able to find those for 100 bucks or less all day long:smile:. Tommy D.

Ron Padilla...I would use a cue off the wall, wherever you play. Bring a tip tool or a piece of sandpaper to work the tip a little...and the cost is ZERO!

Best advice right here :) . If you keep going to the same place, try to secretly mark your favorite house cue too.

But if you want a cheap break cue, here's some things I've done.

But if you want something of your own, I've had good experiences with attaching Phenolic Tip/Ferrule combos onto low end cues. Usually $40 from my cue guy and well worth it.

Did that to one of those excalibur Cuetecs and it was a beast. (buying brand new and labor would probably be $80 for cue, with labor $120 total, but you can typically find fiberglass cuetecs for cheap on craigslist/online). Sold it to a leaguer for $50 and she'll never sell it back :(

Then I had same tip installed on a cheap action cue and it broke great!

Otherwise, as others have said, J&J are great options usually at about $80. There are cheap ebay break shafts for various joints that are usually about $30.

I've had a power break 1, and a fury break cue and my crappy ones broke harder and were more fun lol.

Never been to Lucky's Billiards in Arlington, have you? A lot of the cues on those walls don't even have tips on them and the ones that do are glued on so crooked to the point of uselessness.

That said, on places that have usable equipment, off the wall is certainly a viable option and one I have used many times. Heck, every once in a while I like to shoot for an hour or so off the wall just so I can appreciate more of what I have in my case.
