What Pool Player Inspires You?

I had always liked the fast, aggresive, loose style of Ga Young. I would love to continue to play that way but as I practice, I keep compressing everything for the sake of ball making consistancy. When I saw her beat Megan 9-0 in 22 minutes that made it concrete for me. She didnt miss one shot, played perfect, and did it fast. I love how she plays, just automatic.

On the men's side, I love Jon Schmidt's 9 ball. He gets out of line just enough sometimes to have to come with a great shot, and invariably he pulls it off. Fun to watch!

> The pro player I've learned the most from, just by watching with total concentration,is Mike Sigel without question. I try to watch part of a match before I go to play in a serious tournament, and his matches are usually the ones I watch, most notably the 150-out against Zuglan, and the Bicycle Club finals against Davenport. I also catch myself watching the finals of the 1993 Pro Tour Championship with Earl and Tony Ellin, mainly because of the gear Earl catches about halfway thru the set. Really though, anyone that I know generally plays or does something particular better than me,such as the break inspires me. Tommy D.

There is one player who inspires me far more than any other - Jeanette Lee. She is a model of professionalism - always caters to the fans, no matter the situation, and often despite significant inconvenience. She has an unbelieveable love for the game, and unbelieveable drive to achieve; in the face of physical handicaps that would send people with less fortitude to the disability office. She contributes significant time and energy (not just her name) to worthwhile charities and organizations like the Women's Sports Foundation and Scoliosis Association.

I'm hard-pressed to think of an athlete (any gender, any sport) who impresses me as much; certainly an inspiration to a hack like me (hey breakup, did I mention I got to play against her at DCC this year?...you see, Efren was my partner and .........).

One time I was talking to Shawn about Shannon and I expressed how I loved watching the shots that Shannon comes up with. Very exciting & fun to watch. His comment was "Yeah if you like watching people get out of line all of the time." (FYI, Shawn & Shannon are friends, he didn't say it with malice). That's when I realized that I find it more entertainting to watch great players get out of line than it is to watch great players play perfect.

Thorsten Hohmann. His cool, calm demeaner at the table really has inspired me to keep my emotions in check. He also told me something that has helped me a ton. He told me winning isnt as important to him as playing well. If I lose a tough set or do something that costs me a match or something like that I think of what he told me and I shake it off where as before I would of let it bother me.

I'd second Thorsten. Like many European players, his mechanics are so perfect. It's really a pleasure to watch.

When I watch Efren play it inspires me to play. However, many players just inspire me to keep my day job.

LOL. That's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this post..
The only thing a pool player has ever inspired me to do was get a job so that I wouldn't become a pool player..Although I have to admit, watching some of the champions play makes me want to get on a table. Some make the game look so easy..

I assume most of you have the same thing happen when you watch pool on television, you instantly want to go to the pool room and get in a few games. I am curious to know if there is a pool player out there that really inspires you - this could include the enjoyment of watching them or just plainly (as I like to call it) "puts fire in your belly" to play better. If so, who and why?

Tony Robles .Jus a all around great guy and great pool player. And Mad skill.
tony R all the way .

I have to agree with you on this one Blackjack - what a great comeback for her. I was right there with you on that one. 9balllvr

Allison Fisher has been a total class act from the day she arrived in this country. Humble, sincere, gracious and generous with her fans are a few of the words I would use to describe her. With a keen sense of humor too.

And Allison has as much heart off the table as on. What a gift to the pool world she has been.

Some of the things that inspire me are....

Seeing an underdog suck it up with a come from behind win...

Seeing a kid rolling the balls around with that look in his eye.....you known what I mean:D

Old school straight pool with suits on, a big arena, black and white TV, and long runs....

and.....Efren. Nothing gets me out of the chair like seeing some of his 1pocket shots. Then it's out to the table.....

Efren matches. I watched videos of him before playing a tournament the next day. That's kinda my accustomed ceremonial preparation to phsyche myself from every tourney I play.

I would have to say that the player who inspires me most, no one has really heard of, except in these parts. Her name is Clara Silvas and she is a scrapper in her 60's who never lets you feel bad about yourself or your game. She absolutely loves the game...every intricacy and the beauty involved in execution. She is now taking up 3C. I just love her zest and outlook...it is very inspiring to me.

Can't argue with that one!!! Tony is a great player and an even better person!

watch their eyes

Almost all the real greats but, the tops are Willie Mosconi and Earl Strickland for treating pocket billiards like a sport.

Allison Fisher use to inspire me, and now Niels Feijen inspires me, just his appearance and style at the table makes me want to be the best i can be.
