There are a couple of pool rooms in my area and each having a variety of different lighting.

From the old school look and feel....all the lights are turned off except the table lights and the neons on the wall. It gives you this cozy feeling of you and the table.

The newer and more family friendly rooms with the entire room lit and the table lights. This environment makes you want to play better in front of other spectators.

P.S. The pool halls shown above are used as examples and not to bash a particular room.

I like both as long as there is good equipment, nice location and no music at all.

Darker! Darker! Darker! I don't want to feel like I'm at a library or "family fun place". It's a pool hall, man!

I like darker rooms with overhead lamps. I also prefer rooms that sell no alcohol and offer healthy alternatives to blood-mud food. I don't mind music as long as the volume is low.

Unless I'm in a bar for the purpose of being in a bar, I like brighter rooms most any of the time.

Now that my wife and I are seniors, lol. We play at the center for us old folks (we are both 52). It's cheap, smoking isn't allowed (with all the oxegen tanks you know), and no music except for the live country bands on tues and sat when the stay open late. There's never any wait as we go in the evening after work and just a few are there.
It's not perfect, but the tables are in great shape, and as a added perk the old guys are showing us all the moves they learned over the years.
Anyway here are a few pics.
They have carom billard table.
Two snooker tables
Five 4x8 tables

The place I play in is owned by a chain over here in Europe so they have the obligatory juke box with loud music, dark tables & one of those god awful boxer machines so it's a nightmare if your on you backswing & some moron takes a full blooded whack at the thing I HATE it.

My idea of a decent pool room is something akin to skyline billiards over in Brooklyn New York although with alot more light above the tables similar to the second picture in the original post with no jukebox or boxing machine, it's a pool room not an amusement arcade.

No question....DARK.

I hate playing in bright dentist-office/school cafeteria type places!

The best pool hall I was ever in had black painted walls and a dark floor, no lights in the places besides hanging table lights, a few beer neons, and some tvs. Fantastic!

I haven't play in a darken poolhall like the first pic in years. I've forgotten how that slight little detail can make such a big diff. in atmoshere.

Picture # 2 was tagged as Ultimate Billiards by the owner. www.ultimate-billiards.com Just to let you know the ugly white lights are for closing time and are on for the picture taking process. We have table lighting for each table and wall brackets for ambiance.

No bar, no pinball machines, no bowling alleys, just pool, nothing else...oh, and dark.

One where you can smoke without having to go outside in 90º+ or 20º- weather. But I want you all to stay healthy.

Darker for me. I seem to play better meaning for some reason, likely just one of those things in my head, it makes the table & balls easier to focus on when down on shots, and I also see edges better. Probably sounds nuts, but I'll take dark. And a few good tunes in the jukebox as well.

I voted darker. A good poll for sure, but the single most important issue for me is CLEAN TABLES! If they're not cleaned several times per week I'm outta there. The other thing that really is awesome is an outside-the-restroom hand washing station. Ironically those always seem to appear in rooms that have the cleanest tables. -Z-
