What size is your table in your house? Trying to decide between 8 and 9 foot.

I am looking at tables for my house and everyone says Gold Crown or diamond in 9 foot, which sounds great, but are hard to find locally.(Indiana) Plus, once you find a gc or diamond I need to pay 400 to move it minimum, 400 for simonis, 400 for new rails. It kind of seem like not that good of a deal to find an older gc or Gandy for 1k and them have to pay total of 2200+ to get it all setup!!!! I could buy a really nice 8 foot new for that price. So I started looking at used or new 8 foot olhausens an found several for under 1500 installed with new cloth. Then I read the pockets are annoying and spit out balls alot.

Will I really regret going with an 8 foot home table??

Yes. If you consider yourself a player you will regret not getting a 9 foot table. And that being the case, the two best by far are GC's or Diamond.

The only real reason for getting an 8' table imho is if room is a problem. Then I can totally see it.

I would much rather spend an additional $1k for a good used 9' GC or Diamond over even a new 9' Olhausen, much less an 8' foot "O", Gandy, Connelly or anything else. And depending on the table you may not need new cushions.

I have a 9' GC4 in my garage and have no regrets that I didn't compromise. Amortized over the life of the table it amounts to very little.

It all depends on what you plan on doing as far as competing or if you just want a table at home.

If you typically play on bar tables(7' tables), then you won't regret getting an 8' table. But if thats the case, why not just get a 7' table?

In my experience, it generally is easier to adapt when you go down in the size of the tables, not up.

Yup....I would go 9' if room is not an issue. That's what I have. If I had gone with an 8 I would just bought a 9 later...I know it.
Just keep shopping and be patient....a nice used 9er will show up for sale sooner or later.

I started on an 8 ft Minnesota Fats "Pacer" model back in 1970-1971. Then it was a 9 ft Gandy in the late 1980's. I now have what I've always wanted, a 9ft Brunswick.

There really is a big difference in the extra foot. If you can swing it, I would for sure advise you to get the big track. You get a 9ft'er & you'll be glad you did.
Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Buy a 9-footer. You'll never regret it.

Buy an 8-footer... and you MAY regret it.

And buy the best that you can afford.

I love my 9' Diamond Pro Am. :thumbup2:

I have a 9' table and don't regret it one bit. I actually moved into this home because it could fit one in the downstairs area. It was well worth it. I am saving a pantload of money by not going out and spending cash at the bars. Actually, the table has already paid for itself.

The only drawback is that when you have a table at home, you end up playing by yourself almost always.

I have a 9' Olhausen, with tight pockets. I had to build a room for it. No regrets. I had an 8' Brunswick prior to that, and would rather have had a 7', or 9'.

I once had an 8-foot Olhausen (search for "Olhausen Death Rattle™"), but went to a 9-foot Gold Crown. The only reason I can now see for buying an 8-foot table is if the choice is 8-foot or nothing.

A nice used Gold Crown should be easy to find, and you'll never regret it.

I put a 20' x 26' addition on my house so I could have a 4 1/2 x 9 Diamond pro-am. I'm very happy I did. If you have the room, I think you should opt for the big table. Diamond is in your neck of the woods. Go for it...

If you have a pool hall that you can play at then wait until you find the right table. I'd go with a 9' Gold Crown or Diamond if you like. They are out there...craigslist, pool halls going out of business. Maybe even an antique Brunswick that someone's getting rid of. It took about 14 months for me to find mine but believe me it was worth it. (One owner Gold Crown). I started with a 7 foot table, then went to a 9 footer and never looked back. Spend the extra if you can now for something that will give you a lifetime of entertainment. Also, make sure you get a good mechanic, like the ones on this site. It really does make a difference!

i have a 9 foot table that is about 40 years old. I had to have a mechanic straighten it out but it plays perfectly.
If you have the space then you have to go 9. It really doesn't matter to much what brand as long as it is straight and true.

I have an oversized 8 ft Olhausen. I've had that table for awhile. I now have room for a 9 footer. As soon as I'm done with the refurbish, a 1950 Centennial will replace the Olhausen. I'm spraying finish on the rails this week.

Get the largest table you can fit in your space. If I had room, I'd buy a 10 footer.

If you're addicted to the game, buy a commercial table (Gold Crown, Diamond etc.) with K55 profile rails. It's easier to transition to the pool hall from your table.

Size matters:grin:

I am getting an 8' table for free that will be going into my basement. It's free so I cannot refuse.

Different opinion

If you play a lot on 9 foot tables then get the 9, but if you are buying the table for your family you may want to consider the 8 footer.

I had a 9' GC and my wife and kids didn't like to play on it. I finally replaced it with an 8' Gandy with new rails. The kids and wife and also any casual pool playing friends liked playing on the 8 foot table much better.

It is hard enough to get a girlfriend or wife or just about anyone else interested in learning to play pool, if they can't make a ball.

if you plan to play on a full size go with the 9 foot if you can accommodate for the space. and spend the extra money and get a table that has stood the test of times. and is approved by many. i did and ill never look back (GC3 restored)

Here is a 30 second video of my new pool room:

I got a nine foot Brunswick with Simonis 860 installed for $2000 from Rich "The Hat" Geiler. The table rolls perfect and plays nice. Notice the light and the neon art has the wires going through the ceiling and walls.

I had an eight footer for years and played bad on nine footers. Now I play great on nine footers and the eight footers on league night are now child's play. So I say get a nine footer for sure.

Gotta have a 9 foot..i could afford an old Diamond..which is a great
table compared to the new ones..i looked at many..i ended up getting
a used Olhausen Champion Pro..installed myself without much trouble..
took some time though..all the videos on how to do it are on Youtube..
spent the extra money on Simonis 860 cloth..nice Arimith Super Pro
balls..Delta 13 Rack..nice Cover ect..and the rails on this table are the
Accufast liftime rails..transitioning to a diamond is easeir than a GC at
the Halls after long play on my table..but it was all done for around
$1400 bucks..and unlike the older Diamonds and GCs this table is just as stout
and very easy to move (way fewer pieces)..i will take it with me if i ever move..and like
another poster mentioned..you play alot by yourself..and remember..
resale..there are Diamonds and Crowns here that have been for sale
a long time..the owner just stuck to much money in them..with moving
and set up it can get expensive..my table can be moved with only 3
peices and the 3 slates..which is a great consideration on making a deal
when ready to part with it..SA

I started with an 8' table as I got a good deal on it, but then I started playing in a league on 9' tables and quickly realized that a foot makes a difference and should practice same size that I play on. Wound up getting a GC 2 and extemely glad I did.
