What tears me up...

For the life of me, I never understood that catch and release fishing. IMO, it's a form of animal abuse. How would you like to be in place of a bass or any fish for that matter, when, you're out there in the water trying to get a square meal and at the same time avoiding anything and everything that could eat you to finally find a delicious looking lure? Then the action- crazed hook and liner yanks you with a nasty metal hook and swings and tags and pulls the corner of your mouth every which way possible. Mr. Fish in the meantime tries with all it's might to escape, tearing tissues and having muscle spasms. Finally, Mr. Hook and Liner prevails, grabs you by your lower jaw and hoists you up in the air with glee and a photo op. When he's done his way with you or if you , for some reason, is not his type of catch, he pries that nasty hook of your mouth and flops you back in the water, as if saying, don't bother with my bait again. How would you like to be held by your lower jaw and the rest of your body weight dangling behind you. Looks like alot of pain to me! It's big time psychological and physical trauma. A PTSD central.

Don't get me wrong. I am by no means against fishing. To my recollection and understanding, fishing as history and tradition has it is for the purpose of gathering food for sustenance. For godsake if you catch it, eat it! If you have a problem with eating it, leave it alone or PM me :D .

I surely hope it's not just a matter of time before some nut carries this s**t to hunting. So how are they gonna call that one, Shoot and Patch? 'Oh sorry bambi, we're gonna have to patch you up coz you didn't meet the legal size!' And then send bambi on his own sorry way. :o

OMG! I laughed my ass off after reading this.

Just so you know, I'm a proud member of PETA as well.

If your questions are genuine here are some answers

Why do some rods cost so much?
Same reason as why do some pool cues cost so much. Just a little different becuase there is no art work in fishing rods, just performance.
Some rods are made of different material for various performance attributes. Flexibility, sensitivity, durability. In the fishing industry you get what you pay for.

Is bass fishing that different? Really, no if you are fisihing for bass in a farm pond down the street. These guys fish in large bodies of water, must know the topology of the lake, water temp, etc. They are doing the job of the captain, mate and fisherman everytime they go out. To apply it to saltwater you may think it is easy to get on a charter boat and catch fish, but if you had to control everything such as where to go, at what time, under what conditions it gets much harder.
Thank you. I didn't know that rods were so much different from others.

This post makes me want to go squirrell hunting with some sunflower seeds and a baseball bat after work today

Speed pool looks comedic to me. I'd rather watch Corvette eat cheese snacks while taking a poop.

You're getting good at this. Being a forum reprobate takes skill too. You must be quick, cunning and elusive!

Either way (tear as in rip or "tear" as in salty eye liquid) her post makes perfect sense.

For your info. my first word is pronounced "EYE THER" not "E THER." In case you were confused AGAIN.

As a matter of fact you should consider not reading OR posting on the internet if you are that much confused. What would happen if someone gave you a hand written note that stated the same words. Would you be unable to read or interpret it?

Did you graduate from high school or just get pushed through?

I sure hope that this is a joke. If not, have you heard of sarcasm? It's this new thing people use sometimes! Do you actually think I have a list of (at least) 2374 things that bother me about the advent of internet based communication?

I would welcome ANY intelligence based challenge you might propose. TAR can even film it!

FWIW "Dawgie" what do you do all day?

-James (Who's feeling particularly e-feisty today)

p.s. If your post was a joke, it really wasn't funny. At all. Sorry.

Speed pool was on ESPN a little while ago. I watched about 5 min. then turned the channel. I'd rather watch 8 hours of fishing than another 5 min. of that crap.

I, personally, am upset at the lack of professional dodge ball coverage. I called my local cable service provider, we don't even get The Ocho!

Seeing bass fishing and poker on ESPN. These are not sports. Bass fishing doesn't even require skill. And poker is a bunch of cards. Put it on the game show network!

Pool takes talent and skill. It makes me sad for all the wasted talent that could have been great, even legendary, in pool and billiards, a real sport.

Holy Crap!!! I can't believe I just heard these words! Bass fishing doesn't require skill? Marissa... You are an idiot! Only after you participate on many levels in many different sports/games, are you qualified to make that type of assumption.... I would go into depth about the knowledge and skill involved, but it would be too much for you to grasp!

Dude, if you read the previous page I apologised for my ignorance after some people explained to me the skill and variables involved.

Marissa, do you remember my first post? I told you this could turn nasty. I am not saying that you should not express your opinions but man alive you left yourself wide open for this one. You know how it can be on here, give them a reason to flame you and it will be taken. Look I can't stick up for you as i would like to because Fishing and poker are skill games. I do not personally like either of them but I know it takes alot more than luck. I can't wait to see your next thread. I wonder what it will be. I think you are ok and that you just keep leaving yourself open to get hammered on here.

SM they going for the throat (dam posters:D ), watch out for that Eagle Claw hook, if they catch you, they'll probably gut ya, or use ya for chum in the pool with the pole..........Gettin' some giggles out of this thread :p

You sympathetic, empathetic soul...why do you care so much? Oh that's right, you haven't been around long enough to know this is par for the course. Wait 3 years and any response to Marissa would be just ever slightly more cynical.

I've got 1k to bet against you anytime you want to go....

For something that doesn't take skill its funny how the same 10 guys are always in the top 15, week after week.

If anything I'd say pool is easier than competitive fishing. I suck equally at both, yet I do win a pool tournament from time to time.

seriously..bring your money and lets go....

(and no...I haven't read anything but the first post and the ones on this page....so nevermind edit)

Wow. I had no idea that people had to rely on spawning times, water temperature, sky/cloud conditions when it came to bass fishing. I thought it was all about what bait you used. When I saw it on television, I thought it was about a bunch of guys competing to see who caught the most fish.

Now two questions:

Why do some rods cost so much more than others?

Is bass fishing different than "regular" fishing? Because I thought it was all the same, except you were fishing for bass.

(I apologise to anyone I offended with my ignorance!)

Some rods are lighter, more sensitive, cast farther than others. Different materials used, and mostly because people will pay for them.

Fishing for anything can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. Competitive fishing isn't about just catching fish, its about catching your limit and having a larger avg size than the next guy. Knowing what to use, and more importantly where to use it is where the skill comes in. I've fished my entire life, and consistently catching quality fish is hard.

The seasons often give you clues to what the fish should be doing, but like every living thing they can be doing something different than you would think given the conditions.

Much like billiards, fishing doesn't translate well on tv. Competitive fishing is even harder when you consider the hours those men and women (yes there is a womens pro tour) put in. Getting up while its still dark and spending 8 or 9 hours on a boat regardless of weather isn't easy. Not so bad when its a nice spring day, but when the wind is howling 30 mph, waves are breaking over the boat, and you have to go to the bathroom its not a fun day.

Uh..okay..I guess. I'm not sure what all that means, but I'm definitely no Buddha. You can have the job. :)
