What would you tell a first timer to the DCC

I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but I think I've ended up with a cold a few times while being there (I 've been there six out of the last eight years). This time I'll be armed with a good supply of Zycam and Airborne...

And even though I've suffered a little, the DCC is well worth it all! :)

stay far away from poker games...too many mechanics and bad people in the house

pace yourself...its easy to go overboard and stay up way too much and burn out. Esp if you plan on playing. Id try to sleep up as much as possible before arriving. I know I went from my usual up at 7am/ going to bed at 11-12pm to going to bed at 7am and waking up at noon. Maybe its easier if you come from a different time zone to the DCC but I found it to be very brutal on the ol body adjusting and then coming back to the real world.

FWIW, any punishment I laid on myself physically was sooooo worth it. The Derby is pool players nirvana.

I played the nightly 10-20 Hold'em game two years ago. They were supposed to be cutting the pot $5 a hand, but I caught the guy taking an extra $5 more than once. No one else seemed to notice or to care.

Squirrell's young, handsome and very robust son stepped into the box to deal and lo and behold he dealt me A,Q of Spades the first hand and I was on the button. There was all kinds of action to me and I just called. The Flop came K,J,T of spades in that order. I had a ROYAL FLUSH on the Flop! HELLO!!!

Again there was lots of action and I just called. Same thing on the Turn and the River. Finally on the River, I raised for the first time. Danny Basavich reraised me and I pumped him back. He asked me if I had the flush and I just smiled. He called and showed me his flopped straight. I showed him my Royal and he shook his head and said "I knew you had a flush". The goof didn't even realize it was a Royal Flush. I had won an $800 pot in a 10-20 game. Amazing!

I got out of the game shortly afterward when the original dealer (who ran the game) came back in. I didn't want to sit there and watch him swipe $10 out of every $60-80 pot. It was highway robbery. I had won over $600 so I made my little lick. I kidded Squirrel's kid for the rest of the tournament every time I saw him. I told him he "cold decked" me! I couldn't wait to tell that story to Squirrel as well. He just chuckled a little when I told him.

Once you go there you will want to go back for sure, I have been to all but one and have enjoyed myself very much. Like everyone says, stay at the hotel if possible, go to the AZ room to meet some people. I always have a small fridg. in my room so I bring beer an cokes and snacks, which saves me money, instead of buying things there. I also eat the breakfast buffett and I think it is great.

Jay, I watched an old match last night, Danny D. vs. Ronnie Allen at the Golden Eight ball, or something like that, I think it was a match for $20,000 must have been many years ago, you looked a lot younger back then.....you were the announce....

Great posts

Boy this is great to see and read how everyone feels going there. For one of the few times all posters agree on somethng. LOL

One thing I can add, is do not bother buying VIP tickets if your not playing or even if u are. They hardly enforce them and there really is not a bad seat in the house, either on the t.v. table or the tourmament rooms.

Just say no

Just say no to people who seem shady. Lots of hustles out there. Get plenty of rest before the venue and bring extra money, but keep most of it safe and carry what you only need. Stay on the grounds. Just my advice. Hope you have a good time, theres nothing else like it. Pure pool 24/7.

Considering making the trip this year to the DCC for the first time, but as I have never been, what would you old timers tell a first timer to make the experience easier with less glitches.
To get yourself acclimated, eschew the idea of sleeping for a few weeks prior to your arrival at Louisville.

my thoughts

stay at the hotel it cannot without a doubt be beat, the expense is something true, but you and most have not seen or experienced the 'place' this time of year.
i live here and i take a weeks vacation and it is not unusual for me to be in and out of there several times and wander home some 14 or more hours from the time i got there. and by the time its over i am exausted and need a rest.
but the experience is going to last a lifetime, the last time a spoke to red was there before he passed on, we were sitting in the hall way some late night just talking.
a couple years ago i was sitting in the main room with strawberry and talking about next year, - he didnt make it back,

people dont last forever, and i am sorry for their passing

what can i say, to miss it would be a sad thing indeed.

as far as eating, well there are plenty of places to go and eat
i find a couple folks and we go somewhere, the conversation is the best, and again the memories are just piling up - wonderful

find me and we can do something i can be reached pretty easy,

i there pretty much anytime

Go to DCC website, there are various prices.
Yes mini tournaments you pay to play.

I think it is $6 for the morning matches and $9 for the evening, or you can enter the banks for a $100 and see the whole tourny. Whatever you chose is going to be find. You just can't go wrong if you have fun and don't go off the deep in. There is a hustler everywhere you look. So don't fall for any sure thing bets.

HOF Dinner at Derby City

Whatever else, do not miss the One Pocket HOF dinner on the 8th of Jan. It's an experience of a lifetime. Contact Steve Booth of OnePocket.org for reservations. Every year is sold out so dont wait until the last minute. Grady and I will share Master of Ceremony slots, along with other players who jump up and contribute great stories and jackpots. It's a wild time. Nothing like the BCA HOF dinner I attended in Vegas where I fell asleep at the table. There we have players doing the acknowledgements rather than billiard factory owners.

Does anyone know if the parking area is secure at the hotel? I am thinking of driving there, but don't want to bring my good ride unless there's 24 hour security.

I am sure there is a guard that walks around, however we park all over the place and he can't cover every spot, also, the parking is terrible, there is so many people that park illegally, you never know if you will get a bump or not, I would not drive my best ride, if I had a choice, but for what I drive I am fine. Also, when I get there on Thur nite, I never move, cause I don't want to lose my spot, and the police will tow you away if you a illegally parked.

Personally I've never seen any security in the lot. I did see 2 Louisville police officers in the action room (lounge) They were watching the action and instructing one of the players how to keep his gambling money out of plain view. I thought that was interesting.

LOL...that's funny.

I just have this vision of the roll call before the cops show up to the Executive West:

"blah blah blah.....Be careful out there...and whatever you do, don't look on top of lights." :D
