Hi Guys,

I just wanted to get some opinion from all AZ members:

What is better or which would you rather have? Full SPlice blanks with straight grain maple forearm or Full Splice balnks with birdeye maple forearm?

Regards,
Duc.

Tight-grained birdseye.
I'm almost finished with a purple with b'eye full-splice cue right now.
It hits like a dream.
It really comes down to the tone of the maple. The one that has a tighter grain is usually denser and has better tone.

Tight-grained curly maple has a nice tone to it also.

Joey, you ever get any really dense straight grained maple that is so hard it is like cutting forged steel; especailly cutting the points??

A friend of mine supplied me some old growth maple from baseball bat blanks.
They were yellowish/brown. Pretty heavy stuff and very stiff.
He had one made for a shaft and it hit almost like purpleheart.
Unfortunately a lot of them were off-grain.
Will be great for short dowels though.

I will be getting 1500 plus of these...just deciding if I want them in as straight grain maple or birdeyes maple. From my experience the birdeye maple are denser and tighter which have better tone. The birdeyes are more pleasing to the eye as well.

Duc, are you getting them w/out veneers as well?
I'd be interested in purpleheart with b'eye front if they are nice.
Those Indian rosewood are nasty to work with.
Ugly dust. Yuk!

Hi Joey,

No, they will all have have colour veneers. I will have some with purple heart wood, rosewood, ebony (expensive) and a few other.

Duc.

Yep. Those dang "granite" straight-grained blanks I bought from YOU!! :p :D

Good to know what I have to look forward to in the future...
I didn't even send you any of the ones with 30+ rings per inch either...:p

There is a reason why all of the old great cuemakers used to use straight-grain maple before people started looking at cues as art and started using birdseye. It hits better.

I love the look of 3A-5A birdseye in the forearm of a cue. Nothing looks nicer to me. I play with a cue with a straight grain forearm...Nothing plays better to me.
