What's gotten into Johnny Archer?!

I think that johnny has super human eyes that see thing's that we don't. Imagine everything you would see if you had eyes like a microscope?
I think you got it right. I have known Johnny since he was a teenager. He always moved balls out of the pocket if he was shooting over it. He would move chalk if it was in his periphial vision and smooth the cloth. He does not want any distractions, or anything sending the cueball off course.

he moves balls around in the pockets too, he paces himself, he learned this from Buddy, and that one part of his game impressed buddy more than anything over 20 years ago buddy said "I like you because you never shoot a shot until your ready" that has been in his mind ever since and he is DAMNED PROUD OF THAT, BUDDY HALL and NICK are his hero's and Swanee-all 3 equal.

Right Mark?

I used to rush my shots a lot, and I learned not to shoot until I'm ready by watching Johnny. That was probablly best pool leasson I ever learned from watching pool videos. Not because of the lint picking or moving the balls around. But because Johnny will get on and off of a shot 10 or 20 time if he has to before he likes the shot and then only then shoots it.

You can't be serious that you think Johnny wouldn't win 25% of his matches without picking lint and head games. Get real. He is a multi-time champion, was player of the decade in the 90's and has been tearing this game up for over 20 years. But yeah he wins from picking lint LOL. If you don't like it don't watch it. JMO.

i wasn't guessing how the guy plays. YES he is a multi-champ....player of the decade, blah blah blah.. i was bull shittin around about those numbers, but his head games ARE rediculous and DO effect his opponants. It's not his fault the opponants fall for it and have lost concentration...i'm just sayin. And don't watch him if i don't like it? i was simply stating the guy strikes me as odd and uncomfortable at the table, i've been watching him for years... IMO...lol

wen he was picking lint that wasnt there a couple years ago he wasnt playing as good, infact he was slipping, he still starts too a little when he is real tired from playing through the losers side for example,

he sis get carried away with the lint, I said "when your doing that your not wathing the balls how the hell you gonna play better not looking at them-figure out something out something else out" there were many arguments, between us, he figured it out. And now look how he is doing.

I wont put anymore personal stuff in the street, i just wanted to clear up rumors that arent true, and Truck is right too, about the school Mark put together.

I'm not bragging I'm just in the loop here and know what i'm talking about.

Right Mark?
Fatboy has it nailed, Thats how it went.

he has helped me with that as well...now i just stand up two or three times to re-think the shot and take my time

Exactly

This isnt anything new. He has had some quirks since he began playing. I think he grew up fairly quick from being out on the road very young. He had guys staking him and he learned to control himself.

Like Cueman I have been around JA since he was about 16 or so. He has came a long way. Interesting once in Dothan AL at the pool room Johnny was playing someone and won. A discussion came up about how good he was and would be. Several locals said he was good but nothing special.
A couple top players were there and some old timers. They all agreed that he was the next world champion. One of them said " he can beat them all, he just doesnt know how to put it all together yet".

I am happy for JA. He came from very little and has done very well. Hopefully his pool room and other endevours do well and bring him more success.
As Muttley said, he is the best American player period AND he is a nice guy. I recently had Earl and Johnny at an exhibition and both were very nice but Johnny was right at home mixing in with the guests.

I was a little surprised by the topic title "whats gotten into JA? I mean he has only been tearing it up for 20 years. I think he had a couple less successful years while building his family but he has always done well.
I still believe that had the IPT not fallen JA would have been a top 3 guy in it.

Regarding Johnny picking a piece of crap off the table, moving chalk that's in his line of sight, or moving pocketed balls that are reflecting light into his eyes, this is his right if these things are distracting him. If his doing these things is a distraction to his opponents, then I think his opponents are the ones who have sharked themselves. I couldn't care less what my opponent does while he's at the table, as long as his pool etiquette is reasonably proper while I'm at the table.

He's shooting pretty well here at the World 14.1 Championship.

Raj had him in the chair when I left for lunch, but I bet if he gets back to the table he will do some more damage.

Johnny? Johnny who? That guy can't play! Just look at him, all skinny and dorky looking. He couldn't beat Tom thumb!

What's that you say, multiple World Champion, U.S. Open Champ, over 50 major titles, Player of the Decade for the 1990's, Player of the Year six times. Well I guess he can play a little. But I don't think he can beat Raj Hundal. :grin-square:

To me, his lint picking/moving balls/coming up/re-checking his alignment are nervous habits. They aren't intentionally meant to distract or stall on his opponent. I think Johnny is smart enough to come up with a more effective sharking method if he so desired. But I think he's a good sport and wouldn't do so.

well do any of you guys know anybody that would like to play him i am sure he got to be player of the decade just by playing head games but if you know someone that would like to play him he has a pool room that he would love to play someone at

I think Johnny has issued an open challenge to ANYONE to come and play him on his triple shimmed Gold Crown table in his poolroom in Georgia. I don't think anyone is barred! Not Shane, not Dennis, not even me. :D

Do you think this, or can you confirm? Is this 9 ball/10 ball/Rotation? What's the window?

Jay, you can PM me if you don't want to post that last part.

lint picking is an important strategy. This works particularly well in APA events when people refuse to even try to give me a good rack.

Sounds like it might be a good thing to be a "lint-picker". It's bad to be a nit, but it's good to be a "lint"???

Ths Johnny and the lint stuff just gotta stop. Who the F cares? Everybdy does something between shots. Some guys rub their shaft (either one), some guys circle the table, some guys chalk and rechalk, some guys put on powder. Johnny picks lint. So what? If he shoots on time is the only issue that even brushes the linting, and he does. End of non issue.

He was the Player of the 90's and if he has 2 more strong years, he will be the player of the 00's. Things like that are important. OTOH lint, well uh....
