What's Your AZ Perceived Top 10??

Jude Rosenstock said:
Aside from the fact that I do not agree with your order or whom you choose to define as regulars, it is your opinion though I think you may lack some intimate knowledge.

HI Jude. Absolutely I do lack some intimate knowledge. I said that in the original post. You have 20 years knowledge there, I have one. It's just the same perceived Top 10 as the original thread was.

I hardly think people are sensitive or care even the slightest about the order a B player like me puts people in. It was just to demonstrate how many strong players play at ABC, and what a great place it is to come and see great pool. I simply used the Tri-State rankings.

However, I seriously object to including Jennifer Barretta on this list.

Yeah, you are right. I put no pros then put her on. Ooops :)

Regarding Danny, we're talking about a guy who has a high-run of something like 264 (I'm probably wrong but it's somewhere near that). I can't imagine ANYONE happy to draw him in any game played on a pooltable unless it happens to be ping-pong (even then, I'd be concerned). With that said, Danny's distaste for 9-ball is no secret but that doesn't mean he can't play it. I know there are some well-respected players who can attest to this and some who have lost a nice sum because of this illusion.

Danny is a fantastic player and a great guy! One of my favorites! Does he post on AZB?

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to say thanks to that.

Heh.

Remember it is a top 10 list in no particular order so it would put you in the list but not at number 10, in 9 ball you would rank close to the top if it was a ranked top 10 list.

Finally a mention :)

Although it is specific to one hall, Jude's post on the Amsterdam Billiards pecking order had me thinking. So I thought I'd have a go at that also (excluding pros) to get an idea of how strong it is. Here is my top 10 order (from what I've seen) of the regulars although I'm sure Jude and SJM can do a more accurate list as I've only been a regular for about a year.

Steve Lipsky
Jonathon Smith
Jimmy Gottier
Mhet Vergara
SJM
Jesse Rice
Jude Rosenstock
Jennifer Barretta
Jason Kane
Mike Yednak

All are supremely talented players and I hope to be able to break into it sometime next year.

How well does Rolando Aravena play?

Is this just an idle musing or are you for real?

I would love it if I could make it real. I would even post up $250,000 dollars. Maybe Kevin Trudeau would sponsor it and I could go on WAYNE's World-Pool Tour. It could be a reality show and I would have to travel the globe playing all the players mentioned (I would cover all of my own expenses and all bets I lose). This way everyone on the list mentioned would have a shot at winning $10,000. I could start on the West Coast and criss-cross the country collecting my winnings. Then off to England and anywhere else in Europe and then I could finish up by going down to Australia to whip Colin's butt.

You could even leave all of the pros mentioned on the list, maybe some of them would get a good payday.

I have played a number of the people on the list including John Schmidt, Keith McCready, Danny Harriman, Jimmy Mendoza, and Corey Harper so I know what my level of competition would be.

If I get to play the whole list of about 60 people mentioned and it is one long set of 9 ball and 1 long set of 1 pocket for $5000 each then I am ready to start packing and making appointments and reservations.

Oops, I forgot all about Wayne. Wayne makes my list.

Sorry kids, I am not old enough for one-pocket yet ;). I am a 9-Ball and soon to be 8-Ball player only.

Though, I do think Schmidtty and Danny Boy are ready for the challenge (as long as there is no Ultimate Fighting involved). LMFAO!

Surely well enough to be on the top 10 ABC list.

Shortstop speed and a great stroke. But he doesn't seem to want to play many tournaments at all.

I'm sure you'd be Rich Wayne, go for it! :D You know people always say to me "I wish I could travel, or go there, or do that" - there's no reason why they can't of course, there never is if you want it that bad.

Hoping to do a similar thing myself at the end of the year, but not an AZ amateur list, but a pretty adventurous world tour - fingers crossed.

That makes two of us. Every time I start to think I want to play that game I get beat on and realize that I could care less about that game. I just don't feel like paying my dues for a game that I really don't enjoy all that much.

P.S. You are old enough.

You are old enough too. It's funny, I find 9 ball extremely boring as an action game and I am ready to go to sleep if I play 2 sets no matter what the stakes. Twice I got locked into 9 ball sets because I kept winning and it was obvious the other player was not going to quit, so, despite the fact it was costing me hundreds I just quit and called it even because I couldn't bear to continue. One-pocket I can play very long matches and enjoy it the whole time. However, I do enjoy 9 ball tournaments but that is the only time I play or practice 9 ball. (8-ball FORGET IT!!!)

Yeah, you are right. I put no pros then put her on. Ooops :)

My reason for not posting any sort of list, especially one that pertains to my local room is that for starters, one's game can be very dynamic. There are good days and bad and it's hard to make accurate assessments in regards to anyone, especially when people are relatively close in speed.

Also, people spend a great deal of time playing this game and getting better. The last thing I think they need is to be judged by me in a forum they don't participate in. It's one thing to hand out a compliment, it's another to say so and so beats so and so (which is how a list can easily be perceived). There is a ton of history among the players in New York and I'm not about to be the straw that stirs the drink.

Lastly, as I think I illustrated before, inclusion to a list can be as insulting as exclusion. Why go there deliberately?

So the truth is I rarely play anymore, since I closed my poolroom last year.
But I do have a nice table at home and I like this list thing.

So when and AZ'ers come to LA, give me a call and we'll set up a game. Give me a day or two to get in semi stroke.

Like many of you, I take pride in my pool game and I'd like to know how I stack up against the better players on here.

My best recent finish is top 16 in the BCA Seniors a couple of years ago. These guys can play on those bar boxes. Years ago I made the money
(13-16th) in a couple of pro events (the early 80's) and also got a 13th in the one Mizerak Senior event I played (Buddy beat me 11-0 and I thanked him for the pool lesson). Oh, and top 60 in Banks at Derby City in 2003. So I'm not a total bum.

I just need some incentive to play. So let me know. Hell Tate, you were at my house and we never hit a ball.

My favorite game, by far, is straight pool but not many people play it on this side of the country and I don't play it well enough to start spouting off to people to gamble at it because the people who would take me up on it all probably play at a level higher than me. Unfortunately, this leaves me locked into matching up playing 9-ball or 10-ball. I'm working on the straight pool though. ;)

I can't be bothered to check but have you made a contribution to the 2006 list yet mate?!!

I like the way they did it at Derby City where you don't play an opponent, just see how many balls you can run. That way you don't get bored to death with a slow player on a long run.

I've only played straight pool about a dozen times but they were having a tournament last year in Santa Monica and prior to the tournament some of the guys were asking me what my high run was and I didn't know but I said probably something like 35. I then proceeded to run 69 and then 68 on the tight pocketed tables and then later that night I snapped off the tournament. I guess I killed my straight pool action there.

I wouldn't post something like that. A local room's totum pole? It would undoubtedly offend people.

Very wise. My totem pole at Amsterdam has you right at the top, along with many others. Just like the others listed who play there, you always approach me with a smile, a warm greeting and a handshake. The camaraderie among those of us who play there is really something special, and those who make Amsterdam so special are atop my totem pole.

Of course, this thread is only about AZB posters, but I just wanted to say that I like your style, and. as you know, your pool game, too.

I haven't. I'd either be bragging or telling everyone what a slouch I am. I don't really want to do either. Hah! ;)
