Is there any validity to this common misrepresentation, or is the pool community getting dumber every day?

I think that it happened about the time that people started selling "fancy" sneaky pete cues. Hmmm...I'm sure that they "hit a ton" though.

The first instance of woofing becoming wolfing occurred on February 29, 1990 at 2:47 pm Central Standard Time.

right, but that was just a random commentator that no one paid attention to. I think the term gained traction almost ten years later in the Billiards Digest forums, where one person used the term, someone else said something like "what are you talking about?" and after explanation, decided he liked the sound of that better. A week later "woofing" was replaced by "wolfing" by a vote of 213 to 63.

It's not just a phenomena of the pool world....
....it's of the whole human condition.
.
Words tend to 'lose their currency' from misunderstanding....
....and misspelling.
They take root like weeds.

ummm. I didn't know that it did????

Woofing comes from barking like a dog. I didn't know that it became wolfing except for someone not knowing how to spell woofing and spelling it wolfing instead...

Woofing looses it's meening when prenunciated wolfing. There not the same words. Woofing ...insessant barking. Wolfing...mostly grouling and showing teath or eating reel fast with your mouth open and spitting out a lot of fud. I seen this many times...but dont agree that its cool.

To OP..maybe wolfing is woofing done by a big dog barking?

I understand your frustration with word useage and meanings evolving or being bastardized, I feel the same way about 'Cali'...I've lived in California 64 years..just finding out that apparently it is known as 'Cali'. Sonofagun.

But then, gotta let the small sh1t go.

My guess would be around the same time that mothers became "baby mamas" & mom became "moms"......... oh, and when every cue started hitting a "ton". That makes me wonder, are there less expensive cues that maybe only hit a "half ton"?

Just wait until you find out that the California Angels changed their name and the Rams moved away. :( Then again, you may not care if you're not in.. "SoCal".

You really want me to answer this?
Okay.

It's not just the pool community, it's people in general.
They are becoming lazy in their writing and speaking.
—slowly adulterating our language.

'WOOFING' HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH 'WOLFING.'
WHAT THE HELL IS 'WOLFING' ANYWAYS?

They show an affinity for not caring anymore about writing and take what they hear as codified.
As soon as someone provides the correct information, someone gets offended, angry, or upset that another person has trespassed their domain.
This seems to be the culture of our country now as it pertains to language.
I prefer not to participate in all of that and will continue to promote and foster proper language whether I am on THIS site or any other.

Ain't no sense to it!

But here you go.

its all canine

Woofing is barking so wolfing would be howling?

IDK.

It could be do to all the goat roper music you hear now in pool halls.

Same time as Plays pretty Sporty came into use...

I don't think it was ever wolfing. A Woofer as in a tweeter in speaker lingo is something that emits deep sound. Hence woofing also see Jaw Jacking, Talking Smack, Talking shit, Bullshitting, talking out your ass.

Wolfing around or Howling in the Boston area is an old school term for a single guy or guys out on the prowl for women
