i will ask him, he's told me about buddy hall taking him on the road and losing a few hundred and then go back the next nite and win thousands while buddy waited in a rv around the corner, that was there hustle, haha, so he says?

he started playing again last year after like a 8/9 year layoff, said he just got tired of playing. He says some guy wants to back him now and thats why he started playing again, i dout that will work out. He hangs out at a kind of dirty bar with one bar box in it, there is a pool hall not far from there with some good players in it,but he is barred and the owner is kind of a dick!

In the mid 80's, at Chester's in OKC, I used to watch a guy match us against road players and his nickname was the Driller. I get a chance to have a great converstation with him at Chester's last week. He had some health problems that put his game on hold for years but he is doing well but not playing much. He told about a time that Jay Helfert set him up refereeing a match between Jean Balukas and Robin Bell. I pulleld up the youtube video and there he was. His name is Gary Drennan. Anyone remember playing the Driller?

I spent about 8 Months with Jerry Bento in Houston around 1992 or so, although that period is sort of cloudy;)
Been a long time since I have seen him. I found out he played some Masters Tournaments in 2005 & 2007. I think they were in NC and Tenn.
I read somewhere on here, where someone referred to Jerry's nickname as "The California Kid"? I am puzzled since Jerry always said he was known as "The Rooster". I saw first hand why he was known as "The Rooster", he strutted around the Bar Tables like a Big Cocky Rooster when he was on his game and in a run.
I was with him when Buddy Hall called to ask his permission to use his name and their stories in the book he was writing, I think it was called "Rags to Rifleman". Jerry was a little upset when he received his copy and the truth was told, Buddy could have left part of the end of the story out and saved ole Jerry some shame?
We used to play awhile back in Houston in all the old rooms and when our welcome was wore out we would head to New Orleans and wear out our welcome at "Flyboy's Sports Palace". We had quite a bit of fun those days and really pissed off a lot of Bar Players with the hustle.
I would like to find Jerry again and visit some.
I remember his stories of being on the road with Buddy and 3 or 4 others in an old Winnebago.

Anyone runs into him tell him Jon Standley says hi and have him me give me a call.

Jon (210)818-5100:cool:

The books would not be the same if they edited them to make everyone look good. I say tell it like it happened or at least how you remember it these road stories books are great and I am glad to say I got a copy of the Rags to Rifleman and it isa good read. I doubt anybody is going to really change their opinion of someone over what they read in a book from years ago.

What ever happened to the guy who started this thread? Nature Boy.
I haven't seen anything from him in quite awhile. Do you suppose he's gone back to nature? :)

Played the Driller a little in league, but he wasn't really a league player. Out of my league when he really played great. He has always had some health issues, especially when those bikers he hustled in their biker bar came to the Pool Room and waited till he went to use the facilities and one stood outside the door and the other beat the living %$#& out of him. Damm near killed him. He was always a fixture at 50 and May back in the 70's and 80's. He doesn't play anymore but gets around the events sometimes. Great guy with lots of stories. Have you read the book about the Pool Room by Sid Ragland? Quick read, about an hour.

.....................

Billy had a poolroom for long while. I heard Marco got deported. Paul is busy with his young family up in Canada. Santos has been out West the last couple of months, still playing pool naturally. I heard he moved his family from the Philippines to Chicago last year.

Marco is now working as a dealer in a Casino in Monterry Mexico, I heard that a couple a months ago.

Actually, I think Pete grew up with Earl and were road buddies, both being from Rollesville, NC I think. Last I heard, Pete was driving a truck (18 wheeler) for a company somewhere on the East Coast.

Rollesvilles...now there is a name for a pool playing town, LOLz.

Has anyone heard anything about Marco since this fire?

MONTERREY, Mexico - Authorities in northern Mexico said they were searching for an additional seven suspects in an arson attack at a casino that killed 52 people. Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina said at least 12 people were involved in the attack in the city of Monterrey.

Medina made the comments Tuesday as officials showed journalists five alleged members of the Zetas drug cartel who had been arrested in the case.

Gunmen on Thursday ignited gasoline at the entrance to the Casino Royale.
