I still don't get it, especially today. Frankie Hernandez I get and i'm sure there's others who work but guys like Jayson Shaw, Corey, Dechaine, and so many others, oh rodney, the list just goes on.
What is there average annual income, do they work, they may get some table time taken care of but not at the grocery store, not from the land lord well maybe kind of, like Earl but how does that really work men cause i just don't see it.

Don't know about those guys but the handful of local pros we have around here are always hitting up and robbing the local weekly tourneys around here they are allowed to play in which are most of them. Then they are always looking for an easy score playing the lessers whatever they can. Then for higher dollar matches usually a stakehorse to cover that.

I get that but only one person can win the event. Also, gambling if you always winning then you have to keep giving up weight, plus i can't see them playing for that much and making that much if they are not putting up their own.

Its def a grind and not too great of a life imo but to each his own. I know they tend to be roomies and that cuts way back on expenses. They get the $5 or $10 action just because the people like to say o I played ( got robbed )such and such - for me that thrill wore off a VERY long time ago if it were ever even there. They get corporations for larger sets if a single stakehorse isn't available. Some room / bar owners stake them in bigger tournaments - because they like being able to say I'm friends with such and such ( this is the reason why they are still allowed in the small weekly in house tournaments too FYI - ive seen plenty of small tournaments die because the bulk of the players were of APA persuasion and got tired of donating week in and week out. Then of course there are sometimes those negative things you hear of sometimes but I'm not getting into that. Bottom line its tough and they do what they have to to get by till the next score.

A lot of the guys are House pros there's some money in that they give lessons there some more money the tournaments that they're in there some more.also wife's work And there you go.

I don't care where Jayson, Earl and Rodney get their money from. Basically, it's none of my business and unless you work for the IRS, it's none of your business either.

Nobody gets a salary for being a "house pro". The potential $$$ a pro can make from lessons is small. As mentioned, the only person that wins any money in a tournament is 1st place. Basically these guys scuffle from one day to the next. Not much of lifestyle, imo.

Earl's Lesson Rate

Watching a tournament stream the other day, one of the co-commentators mentioned that she had recently taken a lesson from Earl at Steinway. His rate was quoted at $75/hour with a 2 hour minimum. Pretty reasonable for one of the best ever.

Haven't you heard that old question, "what do you call a pool player with no wife or girlfriend?.......homeless!....

yep....i'm with RCK and Scott lee on this....very few players are actually self sustaining or have the ability to really support themselves like many of us do everyday.

One that does come to mind is Steve Mizerak.....he was a school teacher.

Lots of top players can give the world the 8 but in turn they need the orange crush in life....sad? maybe...but hey choose your own path.

Good example is Cliff Joyner.....wonderful player, full of knowledge.

I roomed with Cliff for a number of days some years back and we got really personal. Hell i wish i had recorded it.

But one thing i was actually very impressed with, tho some would call him stupid or something.

Cliff told me no doubt...pool was, is and always will be the love of his life and he wouldn't change anything.......thats love man...real pure stuff

Like obviously he knows it has made him struggle greatly at times im sure, possibly and maybe too much......but his passion for the game blinds the eye and the mind to the cons, keeps him focused on whats beautiful....

so to each his/her own.

Hey people think i'm out my got dam mind for the line of work I do in the gulf of mexico. Swinging on a rope in 15ft seas onto a platform, at times I've had to pull control panel doors off on an unmanned 100sq ft satellite platform and make a makeshift lean too to half assed stay out of a monsoon while being trapped there overnight........and i get paid shit loads for it.....but through those struggles I find toughness, an ability to make something happen very few can or are willing to do and a great sense of self reliance, creativity and accomplishment....and I'm am mentally and financially rewarded for it.

I'm still a transient pool player only mostly on the water...I just give the platform instrumentation systems the rainbow and the breaks....and rob it like Titanic Tomson lol.

Now do work son....whether its on a pool table, the water or at life in general. Its why we are here. To build something....to build ourselves.

I don't care where you get your opinion or thought from. Basically if you don't have something to add or say and are not their lawyers just don't do it, this thread is none of your business either.

Why do people on here with nothing to say always HAVE to comment that they have nothing to add, is it a need to type, an addiction.

Probably the same reason folks such as yourself ask questions about players personal lives and private business on a public pool forum, then act like you are entitled to an answer.

Maybe I took this thread in a different way than others did. I took it as a general question about how difficult it is to make a living playing pool but some seem to be taking it as an invasion of privacy about specific people.

Me too... I think it was intended to be a harmless question. Not intended to pry or snoop. I, myself, am also curious and intrigued that some of the world's top players ( SVB excluded) would have to couch surf sometimes.

If they are high level players, smart with their money and lifestyle, don't have a family to support and aren't compulsive gamblers it can be done.

I knew a young guy with a wife and kid who lived in the basement of his parents house, very good barbox 9 ball player. I saw him win the weekly 9 ball tournament and take the cash straight to the blackjack table at the casino a few blocks away. He never took a dime of the cash home.

Unfortunately that is what you get in a "Public" forum. You have people like Chuck Fields and Cracktherack who take it upon themselves to comment on things that they have nothing to add.
like this is their thought process "hmm, let's see, oh this looks good. I don't have anything to add but i'm going to take power of attorney on this one and make it look like the OP is asking for SS#, DOB and signed confession about people. Cause I feel that their question is stupid and they are stupid, my opinion holds more merit than any other and i'll just belittle them. Yeah that's what i'll do with my day"

Over 1,000 people have viewed this and decided that they either have nothing to add or say and kept it moving, but not them. No one is asking question about them so what exactly is the problem with asking a question, if theres no information to be had then nothing will be given and nothing will be gained so why bring your negative attitude to a topic.
