Action is dead everywhere and has been for years now and it is not coming back, ever!
Yes, there will always be a few hot spots and a lucky score every once in a while, but the day of the road player and consistent action is gone. There is too much information about all of the players, instant internet communication, speed knowledge, you tube. A few talented young players may sneek around getting some for a while, but they will be exposed in very short time. League play, technology, knowledge have killed the action. It's not coming back....
Unfortunately for the action lovers and fortunately for the pool purists, there is a lot of truth in what you say.
In my area, as just one example, there are not any pool rooms that are what I would deem to be a good environment for a pool player who enjoys the good attributes of a cool pool room atmosphere.
Years ago, there were a couple of them in area, and for the locals who may remember them and are as old as me, it would be Randolph Hills Billiards in Rockville, MD and Bill and Billie's in GLEN BURNIE (not Arnold), MD.
During the day at Randolph Hills, there was a regular crowd who were usually seen playing one-pocket, like Chester Morris, Ballroom Dancer Vinnie, and Old Man Mickey. They would always be willing to show the younger players a few tips. Old Man Mickey showed me a good break in 9-ball on the big table. At that time, I was more of an 8-ball player on the bar boxes.
They had a soda fountain counter with homemade delicacies. My favorite was the tuna fish sandwich, always fresh and tasty. The coffee was always brewing, and there was no alcohol served, which I happened to like in a pool room.
By night, the action would start, and we used to have a lot of local action men in Maryland: Cigar Tom, Geese, Fat Mike, Tom-Tom, Quick Vic, Bobby Hawk, the Shifflet brothers, Mamoo, Ralph, Rudd, Drug Fair, Bus Driver Ronnie, Reggie, Strawberry, Sterling, Korean Lee, Lawyer Robbie, Radar, Baby Huey, Hodji, and Mickey Danitelli. Those are just a few action players who I can remember. We used to sit back and enjoy the show each and every night, watching the games these guys woud conjure up.
Today, the pool rooms IN MY AREA are bars, sports lounges, and pickup joints. Pool is only an afterthought. Most of them would probably make more money without the pool tables, to tell you the truth.
I don't know what happened to those pool rooms of yesteryear, but if you can find one, that's where I'd be hanging my cue stick.
