If I was you I would leave that to the guy who makes the shafts. His sources are likely to be 1) top secret
2) better than you can easily find
Further, it's not likely many will risk their reputation on unknown wood that someone else supplied.
If he does not have that grade of wood already, find someone else.

I got some , they are not square, 1in dowels or ready for final sanding or I can make the shaft for you too.
How many do you want, what ferrule are you plan on using ?

If you would read the rules for this forum, you would learn that giving out sources is frowned upon.
But if someone PM's you and offers a source or the product, that is OK.

From square to finish shaft? You're gonna wait that long?

What would be the minimum diameter if one wanted to buy some shaft blanks and hang them for a long time until use?
Would 15 or 16mm be too thin?
I'm trying to wrap my head around why someone would want to supply shaft wood to a cue maker. If they don't have a good supply of quality, well seasoned shafts then not sure I would want them doing the work.
You can't. You just have to buy a bunch and sort them out.
I know people who can and do make shafts, but do it as a hobby and therefore don't have a big inventory of wood, nor materials.
A have a buddy who uses a small lathe and can make some damn good bar cue conversions and he will do it for 1/3 of what anybody on here will charge someone.
I like them 1"'rounds and 30" long.
I pick my center holes. My setup allows me to offset center holes when needed.
I cut them to around 29 5/8 then center hole them.

I think we have two different topics going on. OP was talking squares to send a cue maker.
I'm not sure what advice to give you without knowing your buddies capabilities. You mention small lathe but can he cut shaft tapers or does he use partials and just install the collars?

I think you first need to define what criteria you are looking for that defines an AAAA square.
There are also many rules of thought regarding how long it should take to turn a shaft from a square to finished.
Since you also point our that your trying to do this for 1/3 of what we'd charge, be aware that culled squares aren't normally going to be cheap.

What you really want is shafts turned to about 16mm and let your guy put the last passes on them. If you buy in the square he may turn them cheaper for you, but you do not know what grade wood is inside as far as mineral streaks and such. It is much safer to buy partially tapered blanks and get the grade you are willing to pay for..

You can make some determinations on squares, but you might still find flaws later.
Make sure the person making the cue is ok with you supplying wood, some get a little weird about it.
