Who are the " Fan Friendly" Pro's

Speaking of Jay Helfert:

Yeah, he is great guy to talk with, writes great pool books, has more stories than grandpa, BUT have any of you seen Jay's collection of DVD's of the pool matches between Ronnie Allen and Danny Diliberto? I was visiting my barber this past week (who is a pool nut like us) and he had one of those matches playing while he was cutting my hair. DannyD and RonnieA had microphones hooked up to them and you would have thought you were right next to the table listening to their banter and banter they could......... Anyway Jay doesn't do hardly any advertising on the forum, but he does sell these DVDs if I am not mistaken.

Joey, you forgot to tell them the story of The Gingerbread Man! He ran, ran as fast he can - AWAY FROM YOU!

Keith is definitely one of the nice guys! Back in 2004 I played him in the Glass City Open. I narrowly lost, and gave him a run for his money. Later, he was doing the "beat the pro" thing for a signed t-shirt in the lobby. My daughter played him. (she can't play a lick) He gave her a shot at the 9 which she dogged and left him a tough shot. He gets up there, really takes his time aiming it, and undercuts it to the corner just enough so that it will hang up in the pocket, and he was on a valley barbox! Talk about an impressive shot!

He then signs her t-shirt "I beat your daddy, but I couldn't beat you!" Priceless!

Pure class right there. Great story.

Ewa Mataya is without a doubt the nicest pro I've ever met. Honorable mentions: Tony Robles and Mike Davis.

They didn't call him el Diablo for nuthin!

Keith has always been good to me too...though it was likely the way an adult is nice to a child in a foot race!

One time I have mentioned before: I was playing KM in a 1p tourney and he was close to winning the set, even though there were only a couple of balls on the table (I was behind in games).

So, I get a shot like the one below, bottom L) pocket is mine. I ask Keith if he thinks the 1-rail kick on the 5 is right and he gets up to look at it (stands near 5). He responds with something along the lines of, if you feel it then yes, it is right. Well, I hit it so friggin bad that his hand went out to grab the balls to set it back up again...mid tourney. Gave me a glimpse of what pool likely has meant to him (respect for it?)- after all the balls he hit, money he went thru, highs and lows of all the aspects, etc...he still cared enough about a specific shot being properly executed that he was going to disturb the game to reset/ instruct.

Yeah, he won the set, btw:crying:...he had me at hello:D

Thanks Joey for the information, I havent been to Jays site for a while, not much of a one pocket player either although I have started watching a few matches lately I guess its time to give in and start playing. Hard to go from 6 pockets down to 1 when you play as bad as I do:o I guess if I buy the 10hrs box set when I get home from W**# (dont use that 4letter word since I retired from the Army:D) sounds like it would have lots of great information and some good laughs in it aswell.

Thanks for your service Jim.

Jay Helfert is the tournament director in some or all of these select videos and I'll just leave it at this: Jay has a rather distinct look about him. :D

I'd like to go to a top level tourny to both see and possibly interact with the top tier players. I'd like to know which "pro's" are truely fan friendly. Those that will talk to, and offer "face time" to a real nobody in the pool world. I realize that the demands on time can sometimes be great for a pro, but the really beloved pros of other sports are the ones that consistently make time for their fans. Who falls into this category in pool??

Tommie Kennedy is as nice of a person as I have ever met, he is great.

read thru the whole post and completely forgot to mention Sarah! DOH!! :embarrassed2: Sarah Rousey is as cool as the other side of the pillow. I am a Heartbacker (as EVERYONE should be http://sarahrousey.blogspot.com/ ), and having her live pretty close (40ish minutes away), I told her she didn't have to MAIL a shirt to me, that I'd get it sometime when she played here (Peoria) or I played over there (Bloomington), and if all else failed, I'd get it at the Derby....Well, when she did come here to play she had a shirt for me, and we walked a ways to her car to get it (poolhall was PACKED). She had to run somewhere and gave me a ride back to the door....not a big deal, but my friends wouldn't have offered, LOL :p Maybe she fealt sorry for me because I'm so old, but whatever, it was a nice gesture. If Sarah reads this, sorry I missed you at the Derby, we still need to play a game of 1P....same bet....you lose you get the same donation as last time, you win, and I'll double it. I gotta be able to beat someone 1/2 my size, DARN IT!! ;):p

LOL - I distinctly remember him snoozing thru most of the 1P finals a couple of years ago at the Derby (Scott/Sylver). Even after I gave him a handfull of Reese's Pieces too try to keep him awake. lol - I have the accu-stats dvd of that match and behind Scott's chair you can see me intently watching the match, and Jay's chin buried in his chest a chair over. :boring2: oh well, it IS the Derby, catch some z's when you can. :p

You're a lucky man. I've been trying to catch Jay sleeping for some time now.

you wouldn't have then either....he told me to nudge him if I saw JoeyA coming! :p

he has ALL the angles covered Joey, but you already knew that

i hear charlie williams is so friendly he might just show up in your hotel room!!!! if your a cute chick that is

i will say you have to pick the right time to talk to someone - ie. not while they are being called for a match:D but the following are some of the guys i've met and they couldn't have been nicer, in no particular order:
johnny archer
john schmidt (funny as hell)
chris bartram
tommy kennedy
corey duel
gabe owen
stevie moore
adam smith (my buddy jeff crawford introduced me to him a week or two ago at mr. cues. nice guy very laid back. had a few good laughs - although most of the laughs were at my expense with me and jeff making fun of how bad i play!)
now i am not a shy person by a long shot. and i'm a drummer and used to sell gear and do tech work so i am not star struck around celebrities. but i am always shy and awkward around these guys because i meet them in middle of doing their job. like tourneys or money matches (that's when i met chris right before he played here in conyers). and i feel awkward wanting to talk to someone who is in the middle of trying to do a job, but all of these guys made it seem cool. i don't know any of them personally so any one who does may feel differently about them. from a fans ponit of view however, all of these guys offered up their time to talk to me for a minutes in some cases a little more than a few minutes. they were truly class acts all the way.

i'd like to add alex pagulayan to my list. got to meet him tonight (thanks to alice rim introducing me to him). couldn't have been a nicer guy. btw i should add alice to my list. she isn't a touring pro anymore but she is a pro and she is a sweetheart.

Adding another one: Iris Ranola!

We had a charity event a few years back at a hall I used to work at and she was so awesome and nice to everyone who came out. Very patient and friendly and outgoing to the crowd and staff. Her sister was a sweetheart also, really nice people to meet.

I'll put in a vote for Brandon Shuff.

He walked into the pool room a few weeks ago just to see who was there, it seemed. A friend of mine, Brandon, and I sat around in the back of the poolroom for maybe two hours talking pool, telling stories, and cracking jokes. Brandon has a lot of great stories about his experiences in pool and tells them well. He also has a lot of fans and friends rooting for him in the MD/DC/VA area.

I'd say just about any of the Filipino players and of course: Tommy Kennedy! I did meet Brandon Shuff and Danny Greene once—they were cool. Mark Wilson also is first-class.
