Who are The Hustlers?

I wish a moderator would consolidate all of the "The Hustler" related review threads. Quite a few different people have decided to create a new thread in order to state what they think about the show. I chose to only post in this thread because it was started by Mikey Frost. Not only is Mikey a part of the show, but he also has been a long time active member of the forum (unlike another cast member that seems to have specifically come on the forum to promote his/her appearance on the show).

Good lucky Mikey, I'm rooting for you guys!

I believe that Earl & Dennis H. are under contract with another reality show. Johnnyt

Oh, that's good, but would have been nice to be on the one in his home room. In that case, more of the crazy Irishman, and throw in a little Mikey Frost to goad him into a bad game ;)

Get rid of the list...it's nonsense with the 5 players they have. It's not a best in NYC list ad implied. Just a buddy list. These guys are the stars of the show so good for them. To have a B plus who's played 4 or 5 years in the limelight is silly. I hope this isn't just people trying to be the next Jeanette Lee.

I thought Dechaine was great. He was just himself. Confident Alpha player making games. The 1 handed/behind the back set was hilarious.

If they want to pull the real essence of pool playing and hustling get guys like Joey D, Spanky, George Rodriguez, Shorty, McCreesh, Shane Winters, hate to say it Russian Kenny and Scooter. Those guys and 100 like them would make a fantastic episode. Travel to the big events and show what goes down some. Have a Hustlers tournament 16 player 2k entry with sharking allowed. I could envision some amazing shows.

I think any exposure can be good for pool but what I watched last night made me think about that. Just imagine some of these young kids seeing this and bringing their loud mouth girlfriends to the pool room or a league match and thinking they saw it on TV so it must be ok to behave that way. If a guy brings his girlfriend into one of my tournaments in TAP acting like that I would eject her in a New York minute. Where is the pool room etiquette here? I am not going to bash the show. Of course it's for ratings and show and it's trying to sale itself with a "list", etc. It's TV but at times it was tough to watch some of this nonsense. I mean let's face it. I never had to ask permission to play someone for money. The players on here know better but the non players might buy into this nonsense. As for the list, as soon as I didn't see Tony Robles name on it I knew it was TV and not real. But it's on TruTV and after watching some of the nonsense of their patrons on Hard Core Pawn, what can you expect. Take it with a grain of salt and hope neophyte pool players don't think this is normal behavior. I will say this. I have run TAP events here in Western Pa. for 18 years and I would never put up with that sort of behavior. As far as the haggling and getting the right match up to make a game, they hit that perfectly. How many times I witnessed the haggling taking longer to complete then the actual match...lol.....One last thing....I did a radar clocked break speed contest in the late 90's in Ohio at a pro event where their were alot of league players. The winner got a Falcon cue. One of the amatuers broke his shaft while breaking. The winner was Ginky and he gave the cue he won to this player. What a super nice thing to do from the best player in NYC at that time. I can only imagine what Ginky would think of all of this. If he was alive would they even have him on the "list"? At least it was nice to see his name on one of the tables. I never have been to Steinway but I thought that was a first class thing to do. Let's hope they can get away from some of the nonsense like the list and the yakking while a player is down on the shot. Can you imagine someone doing that to Earl for a $2,000 set? He would really be fun to watch but rightly justified in his rant. They might want to think about bringing their cameras to the SBE next April. Now that's reality and not nonsense.....And I almost forgot...Jen Baretta gave the best line I ever heard. Once at the old site of the SBE, my partner and I were walking down those steps to run the TAP singles event. Coming up the stairs was Jen with a older lady. My friend jokingly said, "Here comes my future exwife." Jen without battling a eye said, "And say hello to your future ex mother in law." Classic...lol

Who made the list? DO they have to win the local tourney that the big loudmouth guy runs ?? Dont' mean that in a negative way, just can't remember his name ??

Finnegan is the cue father. I've been to many major events for many years. Never seen Finnegan, the Irish guy or the kid anywhere. Finnegan looks like a straight banger so he's no authority on pool. We never saw the Irish dude shoot. ...does anybody know if he's a player?

The NYC pool scene is vibrant. So much more to show. Maybe they'll get to it. Or Duddy will get to show off another outfit and her edited 12 pack break and run!

I am totally confused. Now we can debate whether this is good or bad for pool. We all have are opinion. But the format of the show is confusing to me. Is this supposed to be a "reality show?" It does not come off like other reality shows and I can't believe that's what they want. If it is not, then I have to say Mike D and the "irish dude" are really good actors!

Yeah, I think I saw Finny use the "ram shot' at least a few times, and not when he was breaking ;)

Calling these guys hustlers....not even close.

I felt like what Mike D did in the negotiation against the Irish guy and Jenn B was hustling. Hustling isn't about being flat out better than your opponent. Hustling is about either getting your opponent to give up too much weight so that the odds are in your favor, or convincing your opponent that you are giving up more weight than you should (when you're really not) in order to bait them into a bet that they have very little chance of winning.

Mike D claiming that he couldn't give the Irish guy whatever it was that he was asking for was an example of hustling 101, although the Irish guy referred to it as stealing. But hey Irish guy, you're the one who agreed to the terms and then backed out at the last minute.

It isn't like I really believe the gambling aspect of the show anyway. It is unlikely that an establishment would openly allow and/or promote gambling between its patrons. Although we know gambling happens in just about every pool hall in the country; it's one thing to know that it happens, it's another thing to openly endorse it.

All in all, I find the show entertaining although the pool player in me can't take all of it at face value. I hope this show is successful and I hope that there will be others like it in the near future.

Yeah bad action for sure backing out after you lock in, then having then nerve to call Mike bad action, haha.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this show has a chance folks....awesome job!!!! i'll take 2 tee shirts as soon as they come out!!!

One thing that watching the show has done for me is make Mike Dechaine likeable. I've always respected his game, but I never really liked his personality because he can come off a little douchey when watching him play serious matches/tournaments.

I find the show entertaining and realize that the pool playing on the show isn't intended for me as a serious pool player. I'm not going to go as far as to say that the sets that are shown on television are fake or scripted, but anyone familiar with pool can tell that the pool that has been shown on television isn't linear.

A possible issue that I can foresee with Mike Dechaine (and no other top pro) being on the show is that I'm not sure if the layman realizes how much better he is than everyone else on the show. Unless he gives up some major weight, none of the other players on the show would come close to beating him (in real life).

I've seen the first 2 episodes twice each and I'm definitely going to tune in Friday night for the next 2 episodes. It'll be interesting to see what happens in a month when all of the first 10 episodes have aired.

Haven't had TV or watched reality TV in years. Have to say that was a waste of $1.99 on Amazon.com to watch the first episode. It refreshed my memory on how unrealistic reality TV actually is. The list? What kind of made-up BS is that lol. The only thing I enjoyed was watching Ross' beautiful girlfriend. Only hope this show does well with the public for the sake of pool.

That's the thing, the general public doesn't want the "real essence of pool" My gf actually watched part of episode 2 with me, there is no way in hell she would watch DCC coverage or a 16 player tourney. TruTv is appealing to the masses and I think they did a pretty good job. People are watching and talking about it. Tell me the last time someone outside of the pool world talked about a TAR match or a 16 man bar box tourney. (And that is not a knock on TAR, as I have purchased prob 70% of their productions)

I'm not sure how much people are watching and talking about it. I checked out #truTVHuslters on twitter and it seems like the only people tweeting about it are involved with the show in one way or another.

People at my local bar who are not pool players were talking about it and asking me if I watched it. They also had it on a couple of the tvs there.
