Who are the top five players in your state?

Wade Crane is from North Carolina (I think), and he got the first-ever perfect Accu-Stats 1000 score on record.

Other fine North Carolinean players: Frank Tulles, Jack Stenner, and Sam Monday.

I believe Keith Bennett is from North Carolina, too, and at the recent 2004 U.S. Open in Virginia Beach, he had a great tournament, beating many topnotch players. He is a young gun, full of ambition and desire, and plays hard.

Picture of Keith Bennett, Bobby Pickle, and the other Keith. :)

JAM (still in AzBilliards "moderation queue")

Wade lives in the Atlanta area now. As a matter of fact, I was just talking to him last night at The Pool Room in Marietta. He is a great player....

Tough call with so many shortstops but here are my favorites.

Marty Herman
Tom "Shorty" D'Alfonso
Jarrod Clowery
Nelson Oliveira
Mark Ransom

Up and coming and close to making list is Chris Leal who has been playing some extremely strong pool.

Where do most of these guys play at in Boston?

I remember one story with Brian Atchley and me. He had me 40 to 50 games loser on a bar table over there in Columbia, South Carolina, and we were betting real high. I happened to win all the games back and broke him, but it took about 2-1/2 days to do it.

Brian's best game was on a bar table, but he could play on a big table as well. He had some unfortunate health problems, resulting in seizures, and that may be why you don't see him very often in the pool world these days.

I used to play golf with him and Johnny Archer every day, and we used to bet high on every hole. Back in those days in the summertime, the pool was second to golf. You wouldn't find many pool players in the pool room. They'd all be out on the golf course, until the winter season hit.

Brian is a complete gentleman, and I hope he's doing well. :)

I am a witness to the above!
Hey Keith Tell them about the payball game that year too!

Wow KN i haven't seen that name in years. Is he still around the Frederick area? Was a pretty good one pocket player when he was playing. Is he still playing? Top 5 that may be pushing it although ive seen him win his share of $$$$ 6 or 7 years ago in Baltimore. Timmy Crown was another pretty good one hole player that I havent seen his name in awhile either

KN and TC are both still out there. KN sometimes at his family's place (All Star Billiards, Frederick). Never seen him shoot for $ there, though. His brother Danny is a really good player, also. Lots of good action can be found around All Star.....

Danny Green might be the best player in all of Maryland after Mike Davis. Shaun Wilkie is an up-and-comer. There are also jam-up one pocket players to numerous to mention.

The Jim Henson Pigy is referring to is a short, loud, and obnoxious guy around 40 years old they call "Shorty". He's mentioned in "Playing off the Rail" (in the chapter on Arlington, VA) and he's one of the better 9-ball players in the area -- but definitely not number-one.
I can name 5 Players from Md that would Hi-Jack Danny Green...Jerry Slivka ( Now Living in MD)Max Schlothauer..Shaun wilkie.. Ryan McCreesh. And as you said Mike Davis.

Thanks for the reply on Brian Atchley, Keith. I have lived here in Poplar Bluff, MO all my life and have never met him, but I heard he played great. I haven't seen you since the Open; are you coming to Shannon's tournament in Knoxville Halloween weekend?

Chuck, Brian Atchley was a road partner with Johnny Archer in 1990. They both traveled with a well known stakehorse from Gainesville, Ga. at that time. And on a road trip to Denver, Co.,they ran up on a well known drug dealer that liked to play high stake 9 ball. The dope dealer told Archer to sit down while he busted Brian, then he was going to bust Archer. Keep in mind this was 1 year before Archer won his 1st world championship, and nobody in Denver knew Archer or Atchley. needless to say, the poor guy did not know what he was getting into. Archer and Atchley both played in some handicapped tournaments at the Steakhorse's place in Gainesville, and they was both rated 16. That tells you how Brian played. They was called the [AA] team back then. [AA Archer Atchley] How tuff would it be to bust Archer and Atchley with a good Stakehorse? Beatle.........

Missouri

Jerry Terbrock
Andy Quinn
Rich Sager
Larry Lutman
Mark Wilson/ Little Pat

There are a few one pocket specialists that would be on this list if one were asking about one-pocket only, like Danny Hill. Also, if Little Ricky Van Ume would ever show up he would jump to the top of the list.

Danny Harriman ??????

No it was just funny to see Danny Green listed as the best player in the Md area.. He is a very good player but not in the top 5 anymore..

Funny, huh? Not anymore...why, because he does not play anymore? In case there is any big action for him, he will start playing lickity-split...any takers from Maryland? Ain't no one in Maryland he is immune to.

LOL! :D There is a reason why you don't see Danny Green at many events. He likes flying under the radar screen, and he probably would enjoy reading that his "game" is not as high-ranking as other Maryland/Virginia/D.C. players.

I did hear it through the grapevine that he pocketed a cool 15 dimes recently on a field of green, more than some pool tournaments pay out for first place. ;)

Danny Green is mentioned in the Playing Off the Rail book, but his greatest contribution to the game/sport is that he was the founder and creator of the first Planet Pool Tour, a regional tour in my neck of the woods which has flourished and grown to be quite popular. It then became Falcon Tour, then changed back to Planet Pool Tour, and is now the Tiger/Planet Pool Tour. Interesting Danny Green factoids.

One thing for sure, he can jump balls like a jack rabbit. :p

Keith and Brian both had some real thoroughbreds for stake horses when Keith busted brian, it was the same month that Brian was crowned the barron of the bar box, or shortly after when this match up occured. I cant remember exactly what they were betting per game but it was at least a $1000.00 at the flip, and like Keith posted earlier he was 40-50 games loser over a period of 2 days or so. The Either put him to sleep and ended up winning money, not just breaking even! I wish I could remember all of the players in the payball game at that time.too. It was a battle of epic proportions, with a bunch of heavy weights in that too. Keith and Bob O. were the last men standing in that game which last for about 4-6 days. $100.00 per ball and double on the money, double for a run out with all 6 balls on the table with a minimum of 6 players at all times. I can remember Jay S, Keith, Bob O., Kim D., I just cant recall who else played in it? Help me out here Keith!

Young Jason Miller from Dayton won the banks division at Derby. So you need to give him a nod as an up-and-comer.

Also Joe Brown from Dayton plays pretty strong.

Your right Wally. Jason beat Glenn piggybanks 15-0 wasnt it? Want to see a video of the derby city classic with Miller playing Brumback? It's the 7th & 8th ones down dated 21/03/2005 (two videos)

Some others to include:
Dee Atkins
Frank Ruby
Tommy Stephenson (Finished 3rd at the derby city classic in 9-ball one year)

Chuck, Brian was called 1/2 of the (AA) team, and Johnny was called 1/2 of the (AA) team around here back then. If you ever get to meet him, ask him about the Denver trip, and call him 1/2 the (AA) team, I'm sure he will remember. Beatle.........

I'm trying to remember who all played in that ring game, but I was so caught up at that time in the other games. I think Lisciotti might have been in it, but I know Pittsburgh John was. You know he had no quit in him and stayed for the long haul.

It did come down to me and Bob Ogburn when it was all said and done. Coon Dog known as Calhoun was also there sweating it each day with all of us, sneaking around winning his little nubbins. Thanks for some good memories. That was sure a lot of fun. The best thing about all of that is that we were all friends when it was over. That's the way I like it.
