Who are the top five players in your state?

State of Texas

State of Texas
1) Jeremy Jones
2) Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant
3) Al Mason
4) Denis Strickland
5) "Houston Kid"

P.S. Cliff Joyner doesn't live in TX
Would someone please tell me who the Houston Kid is?
!. Jeremy Jones
2. Charlie Bryant
3. David G
4. Jui Lung Chen
5. Sylver Ochoa

With these five, one could easily make a case for several more and certainly one of the most consistent players in the state, James Davis Sr.

The only player who I know of that lives in NJ and should be considered for the top five is Jose Garcia. I'm sure there are many more. New Jersey sees a lot of great players, but many live in NY or PA. Don't forget that Hopkins, Mizerak, and Mosconi all lived in NJ. Since it was mentioned above, let me agree that if you're in the area, you should stop by The Green Room on RT 73 in Maple Shade. I've seen some top players, including Santos and Parica, gambling there.

Karl Sloezen. One of the best straight pool shooters in the world.

What about "sweet Toby". He has been known to run a rack or two. If Tommy Brown is in stroke, no one has to like it(try him some straight pool)!

To say that "Sweet" Toby has been known to run a rack or two is an understatement. Played a 10 ahead match with a guy years ago and ran ten straight. The guy never saw the table except to rack!
According to the stories, Mizerak was afraid to play him.

I dont think you can put Toby in the top tier category anymore. I am sure he can still run out great but he has to be a shade of his former self. I never see him out and about in the South Florida pool scene, he never enters any tournaments anymore and Voodoo Daddy was saying just the other day that Toby would rather do just about anything else than shoot pool.

Yes, I think Robb SHOULD beat each of them every time.

My post had nothing to do with Robb personally. I don't believe that ANYONE should beat any of these guys "every time". Granted, none are in their prime anymore, but "every time" is a pretty strong choice of words. Perhaps too strong, in my opinion.

Well put Timberly....

I think it's funny how completely OUT OF F'N touch some people are with reality. I can't begin to count all of the threads on this forum that have the topic of making pool a better known, better paid, & more attractive sport than it currently is today. Part of the reason pool is in the gutter is because Joe Q Public has this image of pool being nothing but seedy low life gamblers in pool halls hustling people. The fact that Shawn Putnam ISN'T that is what MAKES HIM A "WORLD CLASS PLAYER". How F'n stupid can you be sometimes not to see this?!?!?!? The majority of the guys on the pro tour (not just Shawn) have done what they can to distance themselves from the seedy, low life, thieving sob's of yesteryear that helped put pool where it is today(great place huh? ). "Shawn considers himself good". LOL, YO MCFLY YOU IN THERE?!?!?!?!?!? What part of winning two UPA tourney's back to back do you find "not good"? How about getting invited to the WPC, the Patriot Cup, sudden death 7 ball on ESPN, THE MOSCONI CUP.... Let me guess.... He was invited to these events because "he CONSIDERS HIMSELF good."   Are you kidding me!?!?!?

People should be happy to see the guys on the pro tour dressing nicely, leaving the venue after tournament play & not sticking around to gamble all night. Believe me, I love to watch action games as much as the next fan of pool but leave that to the people that WANT to do that & don't call out those that don't. Shawn Putnam, and a whole slew of other guys on the tour are doing their best to be professionals and get sponsorship and make the world think better of this sport in general....why is that a bad thing? I don't get it. For every pro that's trying to distance himself from the dark side & clean up the image of the sport, there's got to be a 100 guys out there that don't give two sh!ts about the image or sponsorship or anything else for that matter. Go gamble or try to gamble with them.... there's a plethora of them out there. I don't understand why people are calling these VERY FEW guys out for not gambling or in some cases resulting to shark tactics to win or whatever else it is that some of you insist on claiming about people that you really don't know. Here's a little didya know... I was witness to a conversation this weekend between Shawn & Dave Hemmah. It seems Dave (another heckuva nice guy on the tour) is working on getting a project going in his area where pool will actually be a subject taught in the schools. I heard Shawn tell Dave that he would love to come out there & teach. Who do you think soccer mom is going to want teaching her kids about pool? Guys like Shawn & Dave who dress nice, play the tournament, & then head to the hotel to get some rest after the tourney, or the guy that just spent all night in the pool room gambling with no ambition to do anymore than just that when it comes to pool? hmmmm, bet I can make a pretty good guess at who she's going to want teaching her kid....

I could go on but no one will read it and/or give a sh!t so I'll finish by saying this. A) try having a little respect for the few good guys out there trying to do something right. B) If you or ANYONE else on this board wants to sit in judgement of the pro's or anyone else for that matter, HAVE THE F'n BALLS to sign your REAL NAME to the nonsense that you insist on posting. I notice you had no trouble puting Shawn's name in print... I also noticed that yours was missing. Talk about people with no heart & no gamble.....

Timberly <---- my real name, and more than happy to stand behind anything I say to or about someone here or anywhere else for that matter.

Very well put Timberly. My family bought a billiard parlor in 1966, and I have been either hanging out there or working there most of my life. 40 years after we started I am still amazed on a regular basis the ideas of what some of my customers think is "normal" behavior. Not just in the pool world but in their personal lives also. If world class athletes like Tiger Woods, Joe Montana, and Roger Clemens acted like pool players they would make the headline story of ESPN's news program. Look at the coverage that Wayne Gretzky's wife got for making a superbowl bet! A coach's wife made a Superbowl bet and made national news for a week! Pool players will never get any respect if they are constantly obsessed with taking advantage of "suckers" or gambling in general. This game (or "sport" as some claim it is) need enormous reform if it is ever going to be taken seriously. The whining I hear when players cant bring a beer to a table in a tournament room is pathetic. Do you hear Barry Bonds complaining he can't bring his needles to the ball park to shoot up? The reforms taking place now are pretty minor. No smoking/ drinking in tournament rooms? That should have been a given 20 years ago. Other sports have uniforms, we can at least have the courtesy not to wear pajamas to play in, or shirts with yesterday's taco salad dripped all over it. Ralf Souquet is an example of always arriving at a match ready to play and professional in his appearance. We need more like him.
Timberly is brave enough to voice her opinion and I personally DO give a sh*t when people stand up for themselves in a public forum like Timberly has. Most people in public forums have fake names/ alias' / nicknames to voice their opinion without repercussions. There are too many people that simply slide along with the mass mentality and never think for themselves. Pool has a long way to go ... very long. Timberly is just way ahead of the curve for too many players I think. My thoughts are probably ahead of Timberly's, but I will keep them to myself for now...lol. Not brave enough yet. :)

Its sad but true. Toby, like so many others players in the past and the present, just seemed to turn off to the game at some point. Every summer, he comes back up to the area and comes into the local room daily but he seldom if ever plays. Still his knowledge of the game is unbelievable and for him to play at the level that he does while only playing once or twice a year is truly remarkable!

No disrespect, Timberly, but before you throw these things out about a post with a cetrain players name in it, you might hot want to even use words like seedy, low-life, theiving, etc. Just because someone says something about any incident, I personally take offense at you using those phrases in response to any post with Bruce's name in it. Although he might gamble,(which is still about the only way to come up in the game), I doubt you would find too many people that know him that would say he fits many of your rather descriptive accusations.

1. Corey Duell

3. Dee Adkins
4. Chris Bartrum
5. Steve McAnnich/Eric Durbin (hope the rumor I heard over the weekend is false)

Honorable mention (JR Gay/Jason Miller/Chris Szuter)

Hi, JDB. This is JAM here posting while I'm in "moderation queue." :)

Mark "Donut Man" Ford showed some speed (IMO) with his recent wins on the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour after a brief hiatus. He beat Kid Delicious and a few other strong shooters and seemed to have an extra bounce in his step exuding confidence, which I hadn't seen before.

I spoke to Sonny (owner of Hot Shots) last week and inquired about Tony Long, and he said he hasn't seen him in a long while. Tony always showed no fear and would play anybody, but I believe he's a working man now and is MIA currently on the pool scene.
JAM
Hi Jam,

This post coming back is bringing back some strong memories since I just moved back to Maryland (PA really) within the last year.

Sonny, I believe, staked Tony for a long time. I didn't know they had parted ways. Sonny was a great guy and played pretty well himself.

My game is not where I want it to be yet, but I think I am very close to coming back to try my luck in the Planet Pool tourneys. I played in them often before I left a few years ago and love the environment. It is a great tour.

Perhaps we will meet there.

Good luck...

Actually, I don't think that Timberly's post had anything to do with Bruce Berrong, but rather the person that posted it, which is not the same thing.

That is one of the problems around here is that people associate the pool player mentioned with the person who posted it. The two need to be separated. This happens to Jesse Bowman a lot...LOL.

Timberly didn't say anything derogatory about Bruce Berrong at all. The person who posted, mentioned Bruce Berrong in the post that Timberly "went off" on. She never even mentioned Bruce. Her post was directed at the poster.

IMHO anyway.

Hi bruin70,

Ever heard of a guy named Dennis Hatch? In all deference to Jude and SJM, I'd put my money on Dennis. On second thought, I'd bet your money on him. I've already learned that lesson.

The way Charlie Bryant and Little Al have been winning just about everything around here, those 2 are 4 sure stroking the ball.
Back pocket, ur list is rite on, I would proably leave David and Gilbert out and leave the rest.

No room for T.J. Davis. He plays pretty sporty.

Yes, I think Robb SHOULD beat each of them every time. When they were all in their prime NO WAY. Don't get me wrong, I think all of them are legends of pool, and by far some of the best faces in the pool world, especially Buddy Hall. I have spent hours talking to him. Excellent man, and a trip to talk to...but I don't think they all will beat Robb repeatedly. If Robb is on point, and so are they, it would probably be a hell of a match, but I think Robb has the upper hand.

Arnold you agree???[/QUOTE

Comparing Rob Saez with Buddy, Sigel and Nick. PLEASE!!!!
Hey Rob is a good player, but is no world beater yet. The above three guys are among the best pool players who have graced the felt in the last 30 years. And all in the HOF to boot.

Excuse me, tell me again the major tournaments Rob has won. Tell me about the 100 or 200 tournaments he has won. Tell me about the One Pocket titles, the Straight Pool titles, the Bank Pool titles. Oh and did I mention the 100 plus 9-Ball titles he has won.

Maybe I missed something somewhere and overlooked a few hundred issues of Billiards Digest and P & B Magazine. I seem to keep finding Rob Saez's name mentioned for finishing 5th or 7th or maybe 3rd and he maybe did win a regional event on some tour somewhere.

Sorry, but this guy has yet to prove he could carry their cases. I'd like to stake Nicky to play him some One Pocket tomorrow for any amount. And the next day he can play the washed up Mike Sigel some Straight Pool for the same bet. And then finally he can play fat old Buddy some Banks
a thousand a rattle.
