good post jam. honestly charlie has always been great to me and hes a monster player.
if he makes the team good for him.
i wish i could make team .i dont have the computer skills to garner enough votes.
anyway whoever on the list makes it good for them they earned it and good luck.

You know, I totally empathize with your stance in this situation, John. You have the heart of a champion and the self-confidence to win. I've seen it myself firsthand, as have many.

As you must know by now, John, there's a whole lot of politics in pool. It's all about who you know, if you know what I mean. :frown:

It must hurt your heart to read some of these threads today, especially when you know that you've got enough firepower to win that Mosconi Cup on Team USA. :)

I think Matchroom is doing the best they can to make this a fair selection process, since America doesn't have a governing body of pool for the men, but I'll betcha if they did it like "American Idol" and charged $1 for each vote, it would be a whole different ball game. [pun intended]!

I think they should try this next year. All 8 players play a round robin 9 or 10 ball and may the best player win the spot, that would be very interesting and would be a cool mini event before the big show.

Some of those round robins, Lenny, are more luck than talent.

It's almost like a poker tournament where they raise the ante up every 5 minutes. If you're playing behind a player who leaves you safe every time, you may never get a chance to strut your stuff. :o

However, a mini tournament might not be a bad idea. I do like the idea of having a shoot-off! :)

It would be a round robin format, not a ring game, I hate ring games, haha. Round robin, everyone gets to play eachother once, the player with the best record is the winner.

Hatchetman should get the spot for sure...I can't believe Charlie Williams is even close.

I really thought it would be neck and neck between Hatch and John Schmidt...Maybe Charlie has a team of bots out there casting as many votes as possible?

Yep, I like Hatch, Morris, Moore or Schmidt. Charlie's a bit under these guy's level, I think.
Tough call picking the 5th.

Oh, I see what you mean. Kind of like the way the IPT format was.

I agree. That's a great idea! :)

The voting system will assuredly reward the most...industrious...candidate. Call it a popularity contest if you wish, but you have to admit this is a distinctly American way of deciding the spot.

The voting system on Matchroom Pool seems a bit flakey to me. Anyone with a little bit of computer knowledge can hack something like that and create votes for whoever they want. I think they need a better more secure method for voting, or a whole new system all together... just my opinion.
The voting so far really does seem to be more of a popularity contest than 'best man for the job' contest... sad, but true. I'm curious, did Oscar get on only because he won Turning Stone or for some other reason(s) including that?

Not really since anybody in any country can vote too. You would think only Americans could vote for their American player.

Oscar got in on points in the BCA ranking system. Since there is no UPA anymore (governing body of professional pool for men), then there is currently a ranking system of points from various high-profile events. The Turning Stone put on by Joss Tour is one of those tournaments where a player can accumulate those precious BCA points. The more tournaments you play in that are on the BCA ranking list, the more points you get. Even if you don't win, you still get points. That is why if you are a professional-caliber player and want to compete in events such as this, it's a good idea to show up for all of those events on the BCA ranking list. :)

Win or lose, if you show up, you'll get those BCA points. If you don't play in all events, you're not going to have as many points. It's all about the points.

That and a nickel won't buy you a cup of coffee, but it will get you a spot on the Mosconi Cup team! :grin-square:

Thank you for that answer

I agree....

They should have had the 8 players have a round robin and play for the spot, maybe next year.

a round robin is a great decider. I think the top 32 or 64 (based on points)Americans should be thrown into a mixer, run them through this kind of format and pick half the team from that. It would give some extra meaning, and incentive to get the top players involved in the whole scene on a yearlong basis. More and better players in the periodic "points" tourneys only adds to their validity on a lot of fronts.

Since there is a 'guarantee' if you're on the team.... it would be like winning a major tourney for a couple or few players... and we get the best of the best to represent us.

I'll be happy with anyone on that list!! I think any one of them will represent us with a lot of heart.

All fine players with fine credentials.

Rodney just finished fifth in the US Open, so his current form is strong.

Dennis beat European Mosconi Cup member Darren Appleton in a ten ball race to 100.

Charlie has perfromed very well in past Mosconi Cups.

John won the one-pocket at Derby City and the 10-ball at Valley Forge.

Still, of the four, the one I thought had the single best performace by an American in an event having an elite international field, other than Shane at Derby City, was John Schmidt at Valley Forge, where he bested a killer field in the ten ball event.

All four would be fine choices, but, of these four, Schmidt makes the most sense to me.

Michael:

That's very possible. Gosh, what polls one can manipulate with a large Botnet at their service!

IMHO, I think Matchroom should've implemented [re]CAPTCHA (i.e. dynamically-created graphic image of characters that a voter has to look at, recognize, and type in), so that the votes are actually from a human at the keyboard, not a Bot.

Alas, hindsight is always 20/20...
-Sean

The Captcha doesn't work just try using Yahoo Chat sometime and notice how many bots are there.

I like Rodney or Dennis personally. I also think Schmidt is a good one to add. I picked Dennis but Rodney has the Mosconi experience and has proven he can win. I think we have a good team this year. I personally do not want CW on the team I would take any of the poll players over him. I'm not knocking CW games but he is painful to watch...
