Steve Little was Tony`s backer and they parted ways a few years ago for several reasons.Steve is around Wilmington N.C. I heard he was backing Keith Bennet but that was a while ago.
I'm going to throw a couple of names from my neck of the woods. Dan Tull of Shooters in Olathe and Duff of Sidepockets. They may not have been the biggest names in backing but I've gotten to see some great action over the years because of them.
The first time I watched Efren play was at Shooters, he was being Staked by Mark Betor. Efren played Jimmy Wetch for a nice chunk of change. As a matter of fact, Jimmy played several champions at Shooters over the years. Besides, Dan and Duff have done a lot for pool in the KC area with TAR, Pro Tournaments, etc.
I posted this in Roy's thread, but it got me thinking and I decided to start a new thread.
Just a thought, who is the best backer in the country? I have to say that Tony Watson's ex-stake horse had to be the best. I saw Tony in Vegas once (no staker with him) and he walked up to another player and said.."Hey, can I borrow 500?" and before the guy could answer Tony pulled out a knot of $100s big enough to clog a sewer drain and said.." I'm just kidding, Stevie sent me out here with $50,000 and said 'get in action!'"
I heard Tony and him went separate ways and he started staking Kieth Bennett. Does he still? Is he still around?
I suppose I should define what I mean by the best. Who is the stake horse that puts up the dough time and time again? Win or lose? I guess I'm looking for the guys that the opposing player "woofs" at or negotiates with because they know he is the guy that will bet high on something he likes.
You don't want to hear the rest of that story.

No can tell. Let's just say through the grapevine that Stevie wasn't happy with Tony after a couple of phone calls. Enough on this. I shouldn't have brought it up.
1on1 is familiar with Carl B. in the St Louis area. I don't think that there are many that bet higher and push it into action like Carl.
Also Terry H. over the years. Another great guy for pool. Has created countless action along with having 2 to 3 tournaments a year for the past 15 years.
Here is a story about Terry H. that I think I have told before.....
About 10 years ago, he went into a pool room that is no longer on the east side of St Louis - Side Pockets in Pontoon Beach. Terry was looking to play so he went up and asked Dean Deforest to play some. Dean would be considered the favorite in this game but was close enough for Terry to give him the action he wanted. For those that don't know Dean - he is from California and used to run around with Keith a bit, I believe. Anyways, Dean had no money and no one in the building would stake Dean either. Terry couldn't believe it. So he told Dean, "Get up there and play. I'll stake you to play me some". So they play for $20 a game and after an hour are dead even. Terry is about to break the balls and looks at Dean and says, "You want to raise it to $50?" Dean didn't know what to say. Terry says, "Hey buddy when I ask to raise the bet, don't you know how to simply say yes? I am staking you and you have my permission"
Dean lived out near my neck of the woods in Orange County, and was always looking for a backer. Once Mark McCready came into the Cue & Cushion in Anaheim and Dean cornered me and said "stake me, I'm a lock to win". So I did for a couple of hundred and he won a couple of hundred.
He was asked one time to come over and call a hit in a money game. He peered over the balls and after the shot was over the players asked "well, was it good or bad?". His reply, "I don't know I was daydreaming".
