Who is Timothy White?

I am too new to remember this stuff or too naive to realize it.
I recently came across some pool training by a guy named Timothy White. He calls himself the "Australian Oyster". He has a 10 DVD set out and it looks like he converted to digital downloads only for mac and Ipad. He seems to have some good pool skills in the video footage I have seen on youtube. I never thought it was a good idea to research the history of a pool instructor for this kind of stuff before today. I did a google search for who he is and it was like I opened up a huge can of POOH. There is a lot of talk about him attacking 4 large pool websites. And about his tenth dvd containing some really sick porn on it. Also talk about him and the late Fast Larry and Someone named Hu. I think this and poolchat were half of the sites that were attacked.

I really just want to know which if any of those DVDs will teach good pool techniques or should I pass on all of them and just go with the zero x system followed by Dr Dave dvds combined with occasional one on one lessons?

Yes his videos are very good especially for speed and position

Naturally I do not know at what level you are or what exactly you're looking for but...

There are a series of You Tube videos by Dr. Cue Tom Rathmun sponsored by both CSI & APA.

They are short individual lessons in a table of contents manner.

The ZeroX is fairly good, especially for the price.

CJ Wiley has some interesting but different stuff. If you're not a Dynamic type, his may not be a good fit. I like them because cue ball squirt is there, so you may as well know how to make it a friend & not a foe.

Good Luck on YOUR Journey,
Rick

I did a search and most of the negative descriptions appear to have been written by Fast Larry. Fast Larry was the biggest pool troll of all time. He was a racist, homophobic and all around bigoted guy, and a christian fundamentalist who lied about most of his pool credentials. He was a good trickshot artist, though. You can recognize his writing by the use of (barely) rewritten slurs like "ferry" (instead of fairy), "knee-grow" instead of you now what etc, etc. He tons of online aliases, though, so it's not always obvious that he is the one writing. He would also use racial slurs in their original form about pretty much every kind of non-white ethnic group, and his viewpoints of them was consistent with his choice of words. Fast Larry single handedly killed a pool forum with his trolling and was perm-banned from here as well. I would trust Fast Larrys judgement of character about as much as I'd trust a North Korean news broadcast. Timothy White may be horrible guy, but I won't take FL's word for it.

This oyster guy seems pretty full of himself, and I wouldn't put it past him to get naked in one of his tapes, but I doubt that there is sick porn in it. It's something quite amusing about seeing someone so head over heels in love with themselves. Did you see the CJ Wiley tape where in the intro the camera would zoom in on his face, doing the "blue steel" look several times? I find stuff like that quite funny.

You can watch some of Tim White's videos on youtube. His stance/stroke viewpoints correspond nicely with what many instructors teach (but almost no top player actually does) which is the locked elbow pendulum stroke and snooker stance. Doesn't seem all that controversial to me, and you'd have a hard time making the argument that it's the wrong way to play. Also his videos suffer from the information overload problem, where he teaches very technical ways to do things and understanding angles. I bet lots of "objectivity enthusiasts" on here will eat that up "Finally someone who will get out the calculator and protractor".

If I remember right, Hu and FL were the same person. The AO is a lot like Larry. Whether his DVDs are worth seeing or not, I don't know. I know I wouldn't spend money on them simply because of his arrogant attitude toward everyone who disagreed with him. If I remember right, he, like FL, was banned from AZ.

There is a member here that is named Hu, I think his moniker is ShootingArts. He is from or lives down my way. I met him once & have conversed with him here a few times.

I "found" a few of his dvd's online years ago and watched a few of them. This was 10 years ago so my memory is a bit faded. It looks like he has new content now?

They were well done at the time for production value. He spent a whole dvd on one small part of the fundamentals. I think one was just stroke, one was just eye pattern, etc. I definitely picked up some nice stuff from them, and I thought at the time, how can 1 45 min dvd cover fundamentals, when he had like 10 hours of fundamentals across his dvd, that I found helpful.

Most of the other instructors here hate him. I think it has to do with Landon was his student when he was a kid for a few years. The Oyster used Landon's name and images to drive traffic to his own website (since he was his student). After he was no longer his student, something hit the fan, and the Oyster kept Landon's images and I think even had Landon's name in the www address of his site when Landon's family wanted nothing to do with the Oyster.

The Oyster is also super big on health, like a real nut. He would show other instructors being overweight and smoking cigarettes and call them out on that on his own website.

So his content is pretty good, imo. But he used to go head to head with other instructors years ago.

A while back when a pendulum advocate linked to him & a young student, I criticized that the student did not actually even do a 'pendulum' stroke.

He swung the hand up & changed the angle of the cue but then 'fired' it on a straight line along that new angle at least to & a bit past contact.

That said, video is not always legitimate to support certain matters.

I think your association of objectivity with calculators & protractors are misplaced.

I am very very much a feel player even though I have 3 yrs. of physics education. I have many times said that I am very glad that I was introduced to the game a couple of years before my 1st. physics lesson. I've also said that the game is NOT played in a text book or in a sterile laboratory.

I've also said the I know when to be an athlete & when to be a book worm. I'm glad for that I have that ability too.

Best Wishes.

Yeah,

The instructor 'family' here does not 'like' any criticism or even any disagreement. It's basically get on board or get run over by the bandwagon. No civil discussion. At least that is how I see it based on my experience here.

Best Wishes.

It was meant more as a general comment about people who are very "nerdy" about the technical side to billiards. He seems to cater to that crowd. While this can be interesting, I for one, am not convinced that knowing these things always translate to good play. I have fallen victim to this several times myself, lol. I did watch his videos about stop/follow/draw shots where he used "the oyster equation"(yuck, really?) to calculate how far the cueball would roll/draw. Seemed pretty accurate as far as tip/speed calculations, so at least he does not seem to be misinforming people. I did watch another short clip by him which I found very confusing, but that appears to have been taken down. People respond to different ways of teaching, and I don't think this guys videos are terrible at all (apart from his man crush on himself, and the cheesy new age music, of course).

Worst case scenario for someone watching his videos is probably slight confusion and boredom. At least it's not blatant misinformation like this:

I agree with you. One does not need to know the whats & whys. One just needs to know the how to get it done. I learned that at 13/14 after getting home from school & doing my homework FIRST...

& I still went outside on many days too.

Yeah, that 'instruction' is not too good even for a complete beginner.

I'm aware of the one here, I encountered the other long, long before I came here.

The Oyster's back is pretty well marked up...from patting himself on it. I think he really would like to be a movie star.

The videos are very informative

Tim used to live in the Jupiter/ Hobe Sound area here in Florida. I met him at Cunningham's in Vero Beach. I own his 10 DVD series and considered it to be some of the best instruction available on video at the time. Tim, is a little quirky but as far as being arrogant or condescending I never saw that in the time I was around him. In fact, if anything he appeared to be a person who truly loved the game and felt an obligation to give back to it. As an outsider looking in it seemed that people focused on his quirkiness (loves raw foods, juicing, the natural lifestyle, etc....) and not enough on his contribution to the game. There was even a lot of back and forth about him trying to take credit for Landon's game and such. Regardless of all that the videos are an excellent value and I would recommend them. I also recommend Phil Capelle's books especially "Play your best Pool".

Keep in mind that online persona are often different than in real life. I'm told Larry was different in person but by the time I heard that he'd already destroyed his reputaton.

Depends on who you ask. I found FL to be mostly just as arrogant and argumentative in person, as he was online. I watched him 'call out' a friend of mine at the SBE years ago, that resulted in him getting knocked on his ass. This was after several weeks of harrassing the individual on another online forum.

BTW, I missed the information about FL's passing. Does anyone have a link to a thread about it?

Double edit: second link I don't see where she really answered anything other than that it was a suicide. Larry and his wife were in a car accident, she was killed, he committed suicide by pills not long after that. Back at the end part of October.

True, but he had his good points. For example, he could take a punch.

His 10-DVD set are the first ones I bought.
I totaly loved it. It is a bit too scientific to my taste (he names all muscle/articulation used in a movement, and stuff like that), but the last 5-6 DVDs are just awesome.

Couple weeks later, I had him come over my place for a full week of coaching. Changed my life. Changed my stroke completly. Worked on my stroke for 5 months back then to straighten it out. Eventhought I'm not a pro yet, I can say I know what I'm trying to do on every single shot.

I mean, I would never shoot a shot without having a specific speed and spin in mind.

Great guy, great instructor, you can see he coached a lot of people, he knows his stuff. Plenty of gadget to help you visualize and practice.

he also converted his DVDs to iBook available on iTunes. iBook include text and videos.
