Who is your favorite pool commentator?

I also love buddy hall for commentary. I wonder if he's still up for it?

My theory is that there's just something about a southern accent. It's part of why Bobby Cotton has been a welcome addition to TAR. Two dudes can tell the same joke in the same tone, but it will be funnier when the guy with the southern accent tells it.

I think the problem Sherm is that most of the streamers have a different agenda than making DVD's with commentary or ESPN-like viewing. I gather most people don't realize that some of the streamers want it fairly loose with chatroom interaction. Some of the streamers depending on the event or that particular matchup want viewers to have a feel of the event, etc.

If the guys who are producing the stream say:

"Mentions the sponsors every rack, repeat the chatroom question before answering it so that people know what you're responding to, don't be so boring and get too technical on the game, etc..."

well.. that's what's going to come out!!!

Sometimes, two guys get in the booth and the instructions are "have fun, but try not to swear too much and move the mic from your mouth when drinking, coughing or burping."

My feeling is that a lot of AZers believe that the commentators and streamers all have the same goal. They don't. And I never expected they should.

Freddie <~~~ not speaking for anyone in particular

Good points Freddie.

Yea, there is just something endearing about Buddy, his accent, his mannerism, and most of all his love for the game really shows. There are better technical commentators, but no one I would rather listen to than Buddy.

By far, Billy incardona & close to him is Grady mathews.

Billy has a great look and analyze for the table, what he says will be very close to what is in the mind of player, and when he's wrong Grady will correct it most of the time, but thats not important because whats important is that Billy keeps the match interesting, he try to make it interesting for the viewing pleasure, unlike now adays commentator where they will quickly say "Oh he's out, its easy, this rack is finished" even though there's a few trickly stuff in the table they will say that, which will degrade the match viewing pleasure alot imho, on the other hand Billy will try to keep you guessing, and tell you where the tricky balls are on each rack, even in easy rack he will tell you the two toughest balls in term of getting to.

Billy Incardona and Buddy Hall. Plus Freddy the Beard, Jeremy Jones, Shannon Daulton, and Scott Frost (when sober) for One Pocket. (Torbjörn Blomdahl is fantastic for 3C.)

Double J is solid man. He knows so much about the game and has a lot of seasoning so he knows all games so could commentate any match pretty much. Not to take away from Billy Incardonia or Grady.

Absolutely agree^

Surprised I haven't seen more of this... Maybe it needs to take awhile to marinate with some people.... Let's just hope that Tar/JJ can make this a long term relationship... I can honestly tell you that I viewed the TAR loops numerous times to go back over JJ's commentary alone... It was a pool lesson within itself...

JJ has a plethora of pool knowledge and is a natural in simplifying the information for the masses.... He has no problem anticipating the thought process, stroke, line, speed, etc of the top player... Let's not forget folks, he himself is a US open champion... ;)

I own over 100 accustats matches and still view them regularly... We usually have a classic match playing in the background while hitting balls in the gameroom... Any combo of Buddy, Billy, Grady is a treat to the ears and mind...

Billy, JJ and Danny along Jay and a few others. To me I want someone who is paying attention to the game not some useless post on the chat. I'm not aware of any other sport (or game) that has a chat.

Occasionaly a player will really give some good insight into the game.

I don't believe one can be a good commentator who's never played at a high level. I like Billy I, Grady, Buddy H, and Danny D. I got to hear Shannon D a couple of times and really liked his style. I would like to see C.J. in the booth also. Haven't got to hear JJ, but with his knowledge of all games i would like to see him in the booth.

Steve Davis, back in early 2000 during world pool championships. Like his sense of humor and his knowledge of the game.
