Who was the original designer of the first box cues, and approximately when were they made?

Thanks Craig

now thats a good question.....

I wonder if companies prior to 1900 made them in their cues? I've seen some super fancy designs from that era. From custom makers It's probably from the 50's but have no idea.....

Greyghost, kindly awaiting the answer from one of our cue history gurus........

You're probably right Travis, but Gus did one pretty early on too. It was featured on the cover of one of the "On The Snap" magazines with a matching Felini case.

I believe Ernie did the first bridged point/veneer.
I always thought Gus made the first box cues.
Ebony boxes and red veneers iirc.

Box cues were in some early Adam cues. I have also seen them on some pretty old imports also. I wish who was first could be confirmed. If anyone is friends with Ernie, call him and ask him his opinion.

Hi Craig,

Ernie Gutierrez made the first box cue, in 1969 for Eddie Kelly. Two years before Gus started making cues.

I own the cue, and it is currently pictured in my avatar.

This is mentioned in the third Blue Book in the section on Ginacues.

Thanks Will. When I read the date that Ernie made that cue I knew it pre-dated Gus' cuemaking career. It's a beautiful cue. I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of it somewhere. Would you mind putting up some larger pics for us blind guys to enjoy. Have you heard from our poker playing buddy lately? I just wonder how he's doing in Vegas with the sharks circling.

Hi Sherm,

Good to hear from you! I know the sharks do circle in Vegas, but as you might imagine, our friend continues to circle everything including the other sharks! I`ll tell him you asked about him.

And I will post some pictures of the first box cue, made by Ginacue in 1969 for Eddie Kelly. Obviously, one of my very favorite cues ever........
This cue has a real history, and as Eddie traveled and others saw the cue, it influenced cuemakers all over in more ways than just box cues.

Take care,

Will
