Who makes the best plane jane cues

BEST is a FUNNY WORD, it is like WEALTH, to a Homeless guy it may be enough to buy a Bottle of Booze, to the Rich and Famous Wealth could be the $600,000.00/week to rent a luxury Yacht.

This questions is EXTREMELY tough to answer for several reasons:

1) Playability is perhaps the most subjective part of a cue. Some find a South West to be too stiff. Others find it to be too whippy. No two people are going to have the exact same taste in cues.

2) Plain janes are just wood with some rings. So the reason for ordering one is primarily playability. Thus... see #1.

Still, if you have to come up with a list, I'm shocked at some of the names we HAVEN'T seen yet.

Richard Harris / Blue Grass
Eric Crisp / Sugartree
South West
Dennis Searing
Mike Bender
Ed Prewitt
Ernie Guttierez / Ginacue
Zylr (THANKS DJKeys)

Samsara bar cues play good. But they start at $500. There is a Samsara dealer on eBay that can maybe get you 10-15% off.

Murrey Tucker,,,,,

Gotta add my main man "MT" into the mix ..........!!

I call mine the ''Murrey Widow''.....................Alan.............

I have several plain jane cues from numerous makers and you can do a search and see my collection anytime on this forum. THEY ARE ALL NOT MADE THE SAME!

I would focus more on construction methods, pin type, ferrulle type, ferrulle size, Tip Type, shaft taper, cue length , & etc.

Based on what I have read on this forum for a plain jane i would suggest the following,

material: maple plain jane is best or cored with maple cues no points!
examples: tad's, sw satin's & etc

flat faced wood to wood:
examples: tad's, sw satin's & etc

3/8 16 pin or Radial Pin:
examples: tad's, sw satin's & etc

lbm (linen based Melanine) 3/4 inch ferrule:
examples: tad's, sw satin's & etc

kamui or moori tip:
example: look at pro tip list and these 2 brands dominate mostly soft & medium

Shaft taper: depends on your stroke length

joint material: aegis sleeved joint
examples: tad's, sw satin's & etc

ALL THESE GREAT PLAIN JANES HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON AND THAT IS MAPLE WOOD FROM TIP TO BUTT AND NOTHING IN BETWEEN. NO METAL, NO POINTS, NOTHING TO DISRUPT THE VIBRATION FROM TIP TO BUTT!!!!!!!! PLUS, THE USE OF THE SAME SPECIES WOOD FROM TIP TO BUTT! THIS MEANS THE ACOUSTIC VIBRATION PROPERTIES OF THE WOOD ARE UNIFORM AND NOT DISRUPTIVE! PLUS, THE BALANCE IS UNIFORM BECAUSE THE WEIGHT OF MAPLE IS UNIFORMLY APPLIED. THE RESULT BEING NOT BACK HEAVY AND NOT FRONT HEAVY BUT JUST RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best playing plain jane cues I ever hit balls with were made by Tad. If any of these guys make a cue that's as good, then they've done something. The plain Tads still bring a very high price used, $1,500 is average. If you get your hands on one you'll understand why. Hank Corsair also made a similar great hitting plain jane.

I concur with Jay. First time I hit with a plain jane TAD @ Best Billiard, I had to have one. They hit stiff and are well balanced, definitely try to find one to test hit in your area if you can.

i hear viking is the best.

keep buying up those cues people, even though you're not going to actually play with them!

in all seriousness, collectors have driven up the prices and lowered negotiation power and customer service for us people who just plain want to buy a nice playing cue. note: this is not directed at anyone in particular.
