Who would you pick for your cornerman?

Notwithstanding Fred Agnir, who would you choose as your IPT cornerman and why?

I chose my husband Mike for my cornerman, yet I'm not sure I will be able to fade his disgusted looks when I mess up. :(

For the record, the cornerman can coach (not sure at what point, since they can't talk while the opponent is playing and the rest of the time, you will be shooting. I'm not even sure if he can tell you stripes or solids as you put away your break cue. :confused: ), they should be keeping the score right by marking it down and flipping the numbered cards over. I guess you can also use them to commiserate with, as Mike Sigel did in the Finals of the KOH.

The concept of having a cornerman comes from boxing, I believe, where there are times when coaching is allowed. I'm not sure what use they will be at these tournaments, other than moral support, but it will be nice to use one anyway.

What is your take on the ideal cornerperson? In my situation, you would also need to allow that most of the players will be playing at the same time as me, including my husband, so who does that leave me?

Do they cover the rules governing 'corner' persons during the player's meeting prior to the tournament or when? I would want someone familiar
with opponents, but more familiar with the way you play. Telling you when
you made a mistake would not help, as you would probably be watching
your opponent taking advantage of your mistake by running the table.

I feel it would have to be someone that encourages you to make good decisions during the games, and the match.

Will you be lagging for first break?

I hope you are in for a good percentage. This is an important job and considering some o9f these players "sense of humor", it could be a very painful job.
You may want to be sure thaat drinks are free for the entirety of the match.
Maybe you should hold out and wait for Mike to contact you.

Yes, we lag for first break. At first, I did not see many cornerpersons. Julie Kelly was for Karen Corr, Marcus was for Mika, but then we got to see more as the tournament progressed.

During the first round, it looks like we may all be playing around the same times, so I don't think I can even use Mike.

The rules were skimmed over at the meeting. I sat right behind Mika and Marcus and never really heard them talking. Maybe it was because Mika was losing. :rolleyes: KT said we could talk when it wasn't our turn at the table. But then I think it is rude to be whispering in your corner while the opponent is shooting too.

According to the rules, it would seem D might contradict rule E:

d. Mouthing Off- players are expected to be quiet when opponent is playing.
Any derogatory comments to a player, referee, spectator, or anyone is a violation.
e. Coaching- players are allowed to have one "cornerman" for coaching and support. However, discussions with the "cornerman" should not be disruptive to the opponent while shooting. Cornermen must adhere to the player dress code. Once a player has left his seat to start his inning he may not get coaching from the cornerman or anyone else. Players should be aware that excessive coaching or discussion with the cornerman could put the player in jeopardy of a slow-play penalty.

My husband will be using a friend that is a B/low A player...not for coaching, but to keep a handle on the scoring, which is all he needs. If HE messes up, I would not want to be around to listen to the expletives under his breath that can't go on camera, lol!

I guess I could use him. I went hill-hill with him at the last tournament, so I'm not sure what kind of advice he could give me. Maybe Jeanette or Vivian will be there and I could ask them. But then they might be insulted that I am playing and they aren't. :(

BTW cornermen are allowed to talk to you during your opponent's time at the table, as long as it's not disruptive:

Seriously though...this brings to mind a question. Will we eventually see pool players have an "escort" like pro wrestlers do? Are they going to jump up and start screaming at the ref like a coach would?

Couldn't you learn about your opponent before the match started? I guess what I'm asking is how much does a pro player NEED a coach during a match?
 
Seems to me that the idea of having a cornerman is ill-conceived.

Talking to your cornerman will be a distraction to the opponent... and will likely lead to squabbles either during or after the set is played.

Unless that's what the Kevin and Mouth Show are looking for...... ????

Come on now, let's be serious. You need a trained athlete and proven competitor to advise you, not a gorgeous young actress like Jessica.

Maria Sharapova is my choice :D

Oh, that would be a great choice. They may even spend more face time to her than they did Johnny Dameon. She's got to have a better stroke than Johnny showed.

Hence that rule I quoted above, restricting disruptions.

As long as the player's/cornermens chairs are far enough away from the table, they should be able to lean in and talk low without audibly messing with the shooter. And, that guy has the option of doing the same when he's away from the table.
