i didn't read all 14 pages but i have to say that i don't like the way a friend's jacoby hits. DEAD feel and hits like a tree trunk. THUNK.

yet he likes it and plays very very well with it. go figure.

1-Cue plays like a monster but hit's like crap, but I'm happy with it because I've never played with a cue that played so well.

That's the way my cue is, a Predator shaft on a Joss West. The hit is nothing to speak of, kind of sounds like high pitched, but the beauty of the cue is it does exactly what I ask of it. If I put a good stroke on the ball, even if I fire the ball, I am rewarded with exactly what I expected. Many cues are Ok until you really have to take a swing, then they get funny on you. They are .38's, but my cue is a .300 magnum. I might miss a difficult shot, but I never have a doubt about my cue.

The biggest compliment to my cue was from Ernesto Dominguez. He's used the same Tad for 20 years and hit some balls with my cue. His test shot was a huge inside english draw stroke firing the ball down table - right in the hole. He said "this cue is good. I could play with it." Coming from Ernesto - that is the ultimate praise.

...And after all of those long, beautiful heart-to-hearts we shared in CHAT. I thought we had something Scott. ;)

Talk to ya tomorrow man.

We do, I'm just fighting my feelings.

Retapering

I had a few cues that with a retaper felt like totally different cues. One was a Hercek and the other was a Showman. The tapers felt long and constant, and I prefer cues with a little controllable deflection. So I had Skip Weston retaper them and I liked the cues a whole lot better. Does that mean they hit like crap? No, it just means I like cues to hit a certain way. A cue's hit can change with a lot of adjustable parameters, from the tip to lightening the weight bolt. So IMHO sometimes a cue you don't like surprisingly might become a cue you like with some minor changes.

Also I believe the best joint combo to be 5/16 piloted ivory. I don't like flat faced joints and it's probably one of the reasons I don't prefer Cog's and SW's. Not to say they hit like crap, just not for me as a playing cue. I am sure if I was a high b or a player, the cue type wouldn't matter as much to me as a higher skill level will dumb down any cue issue you may have.

I'm going to chime in and add a little something about tips that a previous post also stated. I have a Scruggs that has an incredible hit. One day I decided to change the tip radius to a dime because I was having some english problems one day. I must have done something to the tip, maybe I messed up one of the layers because the cue hit like a dead fish afterward. Then I shaved off a 1/3 of the tip and started over, Now it hits as good as it did before I messed things up (same tip). I really believe a bad tip can affect the hit of a cue.

I just got my cue from Chuck Starkey... the one w/the wood pin, and I was surprised! I've had a 2 dozen SW's over the last 7 years and this cue plays as good as any of them and any of the other cues I've played with.

I love my Sailor cue but I'm having trouble laying this cue down.

I guess I've been pretty lucky, the only cue I didn't like, besides the super cheap ones was a dominiak. I like stiff cues but this thing was like playing with a steel pole. Hated it.......

I have owned Joss West, Skip, Omen, Coker, Schon, original Palmers, and liked all of them. Still don't understand why Cokers don't have a better following.

I agree with your comments about Dominiak. Way too stiff for me.
I like Coker also.

I shot with a friends Mezz hybrid shafted the other evening, probably the worst thing I ever felt, almost like shooting without a tip.

Having read through 'all' of the posts, a couple of things have struck a cord with me. As for daily use, I have used a Scruggs, Whistler, Schon, older McDermott, older Meucci and can play pretty well with all of them (althought I do cheat and use Predator shafts with some). But, depending on the day, and when my game is 'on', they do fall into different rankings.

If I'm stroking well, the Scruggs played exceptionally well, but if 'out of stroke', even a little, I needed to put it on the wall because if I asked it wrong, even a little, it gave it wrong. If I asked it right, it was great.

The older Meucci plays ok if I put a Predator shaft on it, but I can't 'trust' it. The 'b*tch' will turn on me and just laugh and laugh when I miss a shot.

The older McDermott plays better with the original shafts, but the weight/balance is a little off for me. Can't trust her either unless I'm in perfect stroke, and then if I ask her for draw, she'll only put out half as much as the others. She's sort of a 'b*tch' also.

The Schon SR16 is a sweetheart, all the time, ask, get, consistant, with orginal shaft or Predator.

The Whistler full splice is my mainstay, great solid feeling, consistant, get what you ask for, can depend on it every time to please. But only use it with a Predator shaft. Ivory ferruled original shafts just don't do it for me.

I've never owned a Szam, Bushka, Cog, but they probably all have similarities to my less expensive cues. Some cues just 'work' better, some cue/shaft combinations just hit better, some combinations just go together better. Each cue has it's own feel, touch, hit, and even attitude.

IMHO, I just need the cue to show up when it's supposed to and do what it's supposed to, and some do it a little better, and some do it a little worse.

One last thought. I once had a Cuetec. God must have hated me at that time.

I let a local Meucci lover hit a ball with my South West a while back.

He got this disgusted look on his face and said, "What do you have on that thing a phenolic tip?". LOL

I just want to give you snaps for using the phrase "per se" correctly, including spelling!! Seems to be a rarity in these parts....

FYI, "perse" is Finnish for "ass". Meaning the body part, not the animal. No point here, just sharing a word from my language. Have a nice day.

Well, on the subject... I have owned a Zylr cue I wasn't particularly fond of. It hit way too stiff for me...

Exactly my point! Hit is subjective, however those that know what a cue should hit like pretty much can peg the same errors...

case in point, I had a friend that has a VERY well known cuemaker's cue - we both didn't like it... had a very funny vibration throughout the cue... Just sucked.

hit is highly subjective, so you can chalk this post up as another one of those "Hits unbelievable" is full of shit posts...

edit - mods, please move to main forum
This is funny. I totally forgot about that cue. And, Ross is right neither of us liked it. However, the guy that bought it just loves it. Go figure.
