Who's the best you ever played for the cash???

I know a room in tucson that thinks lil J. is the best. two months ago he came in an robbed them all at one pocket. of course he was "mike" Macias then on the way to cali for a job. thought the road hustle was gone for someone of his stature. Learn something new everyday.

LOL- New territory...from watching streaming the last couple of years it appears that his one hole is much improved.

Forgot the best part. "mike" Macias borrowed one of their cues to beat them. A quote from one of the fallen. "Well, he laid down real good. How am I supposed to know him I work for a living."

He learned to move !

It was sweet for all of us when He decided to play 1 pocket...I can't tell you how many times I heard out his mouth when I was staking somebody against him "I'm shooting at my hole for my dough" Then he got on board & started to play the game right & his game went up 4 balls.

hmm.......

i would have to say, Cliff Joyner. he gave me 9-8, races to 4 for $500. We played a few times. 3 times i won, once i lost. and the only other time i played him was in the bank tourney at the first derby city classic, and i beat him. but he is a monster. when he is right, and wants to play, he is so great to watch.
Raffy Martinez is great for the stew as well. Played him alot in Cincy, when he was being staked by a guy there. Great player and a great guy.

BLS.

When he first started playing, he would break um like 8 ball. If one landed in his pocket he would run out the other 7. I actually saw him beat quite a few mediocre players like that. He just shot too straight for them to fade it.

It used to make me cringe when I was "in".

I only played Rafael in tourny play, I play fast also. He beat me 9-6 and our match took thirty five minutes.

War Stories!

First off thanks for the "positive" comments. Ill tell you one more story that I think is one of my the best ever pulled on me... I was in Mobile and this old man (must been about 75) came in and wanted to play some onepocket for 500 a game and I had never seen him.. Well Bryd was there and new him and felt like he and this guy played close... They started playing and with 30 min they were betting 2000 a game (believe or not a dime a game was common at that time) and this guy was 18dimes loser paying off every game and wasnt even thinking about quitting... I was amazed... I thought he was my long lost pawpaw, lol! Anyway 12 hours later he got even and bryd quit... I thought the guy was done i mean he was older and had been playing for a while... He said anybody else wanna play and of course I went for it and said yes... At that time me and bryd (2002) played 9-7and the break and this guy wanted 10-8break for a dime a game... I gave it to him and got 6 or 7 games winner and I keep thinking this guy was gonna fall out but he just kept playing and not only did he get even but he ended up winner pretty good.. I quit and the guy asked if any one else wanted to play.... He was laughing at me for quitting him bc I was like 21 and he was 75... I told him I would be back the next day for some more and we could raise it! He said Ill be here waiting.... The pool hall was 24hr at that time and when I walked in the guy was sleep in the chair with the same clothes on waiting for me... I woke him up and said Im ready.. He racked them up and again I got huge winner and couldnt take him off... For the next month we played all the time with me always getting winner and just could never take him off... My girl at the time had to bring me 15K bc I wasnt thinking about quitting either.. She was later quoted saying that "I felt like a human ATM" in the SI article that came out in Nov of 2005! I lost almost 50k to that guy in a month and his stamina and endurance was incredible. His name was "Jew Paul"! I later found out that he was considered a weak player arnd Detroit but for my money he was a very smart player and played very hard for the money... About 3 years later I went looking for him and never found him but his positive remarks about me to his town ended up getting me even bc I took them off in that area for almost what Paul got from me and a couple of friends... Lil John Macias

Wow!

Great thread, Great stories! Someone should compile all of this into a book.

Thanks for the stories.

Mike...I got nothing other than being beaten continually by Shuff, Chau, McCreash, etc. on Thursday nights for $20!

Bump

Someone tell another story I was enjoying this thread.... I have plenty more but I enjoy reading other stories.... Thanks, LJ!

that was a great story about jew paul. He was mentioned a lot in the other thread about The Rack in detroit. Apparently he was the biggest whale in the place and was a good target if you were hoping to snap off 6 figures in one night. It's nice to hear a story where he isn't just getting robbed :P

You played Cliff Joyner getting 9-8 in one pocket races to 4 for 500? Well I would not take 9-8 from Cliff playing one pocket... but I will play you in one pocket and I barely play the game. I'll donate to you sir.

BrandonS, If you ever come through Colorado I'll donate to and play you even....I'd need more from Joyner. I might be out in MO this fall, where do you play out of?

Someone tell another story I was enjoying this thread.... I have plenty more but I enjoy reading other stories.... Thanks, LJ!

LJ, you should tell the story about how I had to leave you in Baton Rouge that one time. That's a good one but would be out of place for me to tell it. Or there's the one where you came back from Tennessee with no clothes. Then, there's the one where JA came to rob our tournament in H'burg. "It aint no fun when the rabbit's got the gun". :rotflmao1: Or the one about the Perry Co. Mall where we had to fight our way out. When I owned the truck that I never got to see. These are all good ones. I have plenty more too!!! Since you asked, I will tell one.

So this was about 12 years ago...me and LJ had heard about this place just south of where we grew up that had a weekly $500 added 8 ball tournament. At the time, we both played bar box 8 ball about as good as it can be played. The deal was, they had horse races right up the road every Sunday and then they would all head to the pool hall for the tournament, poker and side action. This place was in the middle of nowhere and nobody knew us there. We showed up at the horse race in the middle of the afternoon and found this guy that knew a LOT about horses. We just stood by him and he was picking the winner everytime but didn't have any money. He would even tell by how much one horse would beat the other. It was the first time I had ever heard the term "giving daylight". Anyway, we got this guy to give us his picks and if we won, we would throw him a couple dollars. Sure enough, we won a few hundred doing that. We headed up to the pool room with our winnings like everybody else. I walk in the this place and it's just what a gambler wants to see. Action everywhere!!! Poker in the one corner, weak ring games, the whole deal.... So we settle in for a long night. The tournament fires up and I can't remember which one of us won the tournament but we both finished in the top 3. So we had a pocket full of money. LJ starts to fire up the action with a couple of locals betting $50 or so a game in 8-ball. I am betting on the rail with all of the others. We probably have a couple hundred a game going. LJ is taking them off right and left. We are up real good and they all finally quit some time in the early morning. We stroll out the door as it is just getting light outside. LJ walks around to his side of the car and says "OH NO!!!". I say, what's the problem??? Let's go! He says, our tires are cut! I look and sure enough someone has cut two of our tires in the side wall. We go in and ask the owner to use the phone. I call my grandfather who worked in the area to come by and help us out. WHen he comes, we are both passed out leaning against the shady side of the building. He just shakes his head and looks at the car. Not a whole lot was said on that ride home. I then had to get new tires and go down and get the car later that night. What an ordeal.

We still kept going to the place and made a few more scores before the world beaters found out about it. They started showing up and it died real quick.

To keep from derailing the thread, I played Scotty Townsend in the 8 ball tournament and beat him. One of the best players that I ever beat.

Alright LJ, your turn!

I got another one, and this involves screwing up and not getting the money.

In the early 90's, a buddy of mine worked back and forth between Philly n North Carolina, and one night he shows up with a "friend of his" from N.C. The guy seemed alright at the time and started shooting around with us, not too good and not too bad. We figured he was hidin his stroke. At the time, Rusell Parsons was the best action in the oustskirts of Philly/Delaware area and we figured that this guy was brought up to play him. You could always win $2-5K from Russell.

At any rate, after a couple of days of bangin cheap with the N.C. boy he finally let's us know that his real name is Sparky Ferrell. Don't know what happened or why, but, oddly enough he starts to show us his real game. He completely ruined his chances of playing Russell then and there. He wound up staying in the area for at least 2-3 weeks and drummed up plenty of cheap sets. Probably made $500-$600 for his stay. Long story short, he never played Russell. Guess he was happy with the cheap games, cause Russell woulda lost big to him.

Thought I'd share!

could not resist,...........Rick james!!!

I played Rick James

He broke, and said "I'm the best playa in the world MothaFU*a!, I'm RICK JAMES!"

and ran out for $500 euros.

He said " I've had it all, I've done it all, I've seen it all. I'm Rick JAAAAMMMESSSsssssssssssssss!"

Best I ever played was Keith McCreedy. He was in Rusty's billiards, in Arlington Texas around 15 years ago or so..

I worked a late swing shift, so got there around 6:00 AM. He as talking to Mondo Canastas, a road player and friend of mine.

We played a couple of 20 dollar sets. My only claim is that I actually won one of the sets. Definitely not his speed. Don't recall what I was getting as a spot, but it was just he and I. No one else around.

Now I've seen Keith quite a few times, and I knew his reputation, but he as a really nice person 1 on 1. Lost 60 to him. Yea.. I know.. I'm cheap.

Anyway.. Keith.. if you happen to see this, it was a pleasure to play you then. If you come through Texas again, or more specifically, the Arlington/Fort Worth area, I may see you again.

Take care..
