Why a segregation of Male and Female in this sport?

I would have thought that Pool is the only sport that is not gender bias unlike golf or bowling or tennis where the Male physique is of an advantage.

So why the segregation? Is there some political reason behind? I know most tournaments in the region still bans female from male tournaments. Would male participants diminish should more female start to take up pool?

I would like to share an article from our local pool scene, for the first time in history the same girl won both the Male and Female national title.

Are we going to be extinct soon? Personally i think this is great! A huge step forward. For the local scene at least. Has anything like this happen anywhere before? Austria perhaps?

What about hot-dog eating contests? In my younger days I dated plenty of women that could flat out-eat any man on the planet :D :D :D !!!

Maniac

I think it started with a nagging contest. The men had no chance of winning so they started their own contest. The men found out how nice it was to be able to compete and enjoy themselves without having the women involved so the separation continued into other things. :happydance:

Because the Men are afraid, it all started in the 1970's with Jean balukas, Jean was more than the men could handle so now we have a Female tour.

Kinda sad isn't it!!!!!;)

It's just not equal yet. Look at the high runs in straight pool. Men are 5x higher. I would imagine it is the same with high racks of 9 ball. Is there a female player that has run 15 racks of 9 ball?
It is getting closer all the time though. Men have been in the pool hall a lot longer historically.

Bowling? I think there are plenty of sports where the male physique is more of an advantage then in bowling.
This is a good question. Most sports are segregated to a certain level. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but is there a sport(which both genders play) where the best women is as good or better then the best male? Most sports rely on strength to a certain point, and men are traditionally stronger. In 9-ball, the break is a huge factor and the men are going to break a little harder then the women. In a game like straight pool, the break doesn't revolve on strength, but men are still a little stronger in that game too. I think a lot has to do with the fact that men are usually raised up playing sports and competing. Women have grown in most sports and maybe sometime soon they will be at the same level as the top men.

i may be mistaken but i thought i have heard about karen corr playing with the big boys at some events.

Karen has done real good in some of the Joss events, I believe. Maybe if she(or the other women) could play with the top men all the time, they could be a threat to win any tournament. Karen and a few of the other women are capable of beating anyone in a race.

Still the segregation exist.

So the question is; is it because Men are afraid of the women competitors?

Too few women feels that they have a chance to compete toe to toe with the men?

Would it be good for the sport if the tournament were all thrown open. One thing for sure is that there will be a lot of new play ground for the ladies. Would male competitors start to lose interest? Shy away? overall participation drops etc etc?

Or it just cannot happen because there is some political issue behind all this man women thing?

I for one things that it will be great for the sport. A level playing field, new breeds of players. Also, where the honey goes, the bees will follow.

IMO with exception to a few of the girls they dont stand a chance with the guys.

jean was an exception. i was told by a very good friend the jean could pick up a cue today and be top 5 in the world next month. he knows her well

mental game vs phisical

In that artical a sports psychologist says that females may have a slight advantage in mental strength over males.I think this may be true as many women seem to be able compete with a positive atitute.

I think that men may have a slight phisical advantage for playing pool.

These diferences are very small in thier effects on pool IMO and are on average not a hard rule for everyone.

Women and Men are different but equal.Thank whatever god you whorship for those differences:smile:

i'd like to see women playing in mens tournaments but the women are doing too well on their own (tv time and what not) that it wouldn't be a good idea for that to happen.

Dave, I completely agree with you here, Jean could still come back. But things have not changed and she never will do you remember why she quit in the first place?

She quit because she was not allowed to compete, and because she was a women she was never invited to participate in the World Championship 14-1 Straight pool championships. The men were afraid of her, i mean how would it look if a women won and beat all those man, especially back in the 1970's.

I for one would like to see Jean come back and kick ass with her Balabushka, that by the way was made special for her by the master himself.

Do you really believe what you are saying? I find it tough to belirve that todays touring men would would be "afraid" if the women wanted to shut down their tour and come play with the guys. I admit that there are a half dozen women in the world who can play with about anyone, but once you get out of the top ten the caliber of play starts to drop pretty quick.

it's hard to know that because the ones that aren't in the top 20 usually don't make it to the tv rounds. i really wish there were more WBPA videos to check out

I'm against segregation, but I think the main reason is because the men play better. I don't there's a woman on earth that would have a chance in hell to win a tournament in a long race against the top men. There certainly are a few women who are talented enough to make it to the late rounds. No woman could win a tournament with the top men in 9-ball in a race to 15 breaking from the box, for example. They don't break hard enough. I can break better than most of the women pros in 9-ball, and I'm just an APA SL6.
