why are the british the best in the world?

I agree, it's complicated.

The Brits want you to include Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland which they technically own, even though they can't understand a damned thing those people ever say. The Welsh are not fond of Anglo-Saxon's because they are Celts, which explains why there are more fortresses than Brits in Wales. Ireland is a different country altogether, except for Northern Ireland, which wishes it were a different country altogether. The Scotch are too pissed off to be included because they're waiting for a formal apology over the hanging, drawing and quartering of William Wallace seven centuries ago, not that they hold a grudge. The Scots would want independence but it's like a bad marriage, people just stay together and sleep in different rooms because they can't afford to break up. They are the only people I know of who sound pissed off growling "good morning to ya".

Lol. The welsh and scotch hate us, but secretly wish they were us. It has been scientifically proven the northern irish are impossible to understand. I have smiled and nodded at my mate for 20 years, without having a single clue what he has ever said.

They were WPA events, so I imagine they got the results from themselves.

Jayson Shaw, from Scotland, is listed as the blackball 2010 Open Singles champion and the 2006 Juniors Singles champion. I didn't include players listed as being from Scotland, Wales, or Ireland.

They are british, of course...

Why are the British the best in the world?

They are great at putting English on the ball.

You're welcome.

That makes you fully imported but locally assembled.

By that reasoning there aren't any Americans at all except Native American Indians. No Australians except aboriginal peoples. However, technically my ancestors were imported, not me. And it's been quite a while. We just kept the coat of arms to remember why we left.

25%, 12% and even 9% are all pretty high number for any one nation. Although I would stick to the "mainstream" events for this purpose. The Brits are doing pretty well at cue sports. They are certainly not the only ones doing well though but, trolling aside, the OPs point has a touch of credibility - and could be a starting point for a sensible discussion.

Well..my take is....

There are probably about 40-50 players in the world, including the Brit's who would be a dead even bet, to win any given match against the other ! (including SVB or Corey Duell, or Shannon)....American's are outnumbered by sheer logistics..We are also the underdog, in team events (like the MC, etc.) because we are not good at 'joining forces', never have been !...Our attitude has always been winner take all, to hell with the other guy !..I don't see that changing, EVER..Our best five player's, are not likely to beat their best mediocre five player's..Because they are all about 'teamwork' !..Sad to say, we ain't got NONE ! :frown:

Any thread starting with "Why are Brits the best" is in no way a starting point for a civil discussion. It's a damn troll stirring sh1t pure and simple.

Then it's better to either ignore it completely or to channel it into a sensible discussion.

Too many variables in there. Best stick to men and women, and concentrate on the mainstream pro types, so english, american, chinese 8 ball, 9 ball and snooker.

Where did you get your blackball figures from? The far larger world rules would be exclusively british, i would think.

world rules is in no way "far larger". It has been taken over by blackball some years ago - bearing in mind blackball is a young sport, the writing is on the wall for world rules.

I don't play english pool, but that is not my understanding, especially in england. I barely know anyone who knows blackball rules.

It's interesting, if someone on an english based football site posed the question "why are the brasilians the best in the world", pretty much everyone would a) immediately accept the premise given the stats and b) wonder what we could do to emulate them.

You know, the precise opposite of the reaction on azb.

I am based in England.

World rules has never taken off outside of England. It is played in tiny pockets of the UK outside England.

Within England, it has a large following but only at interleague and county level with a few regional tours. The vast marjority of pub leagues play a set of rules other than world rules in England.

The professional tour (ipapool.com) swapped from world rules to blackball in 2012.

In fairness there is a world rules tour called the "UK tour", however, it does not in fact tour the UK but only a small patch of the north of england and in fact three of the events are played from the same hotel.

The WEPF "world" event has declined in attendance and money consistently for years and is only supported by the English now and a few english people that play for other countries under grandfather rights. For example, a couple of years ago the Pool Federation of Wales (world rules for wales) left the WEPF and rejoined the WPA (blackball in Wales) to participate in blackball events. The WEP's answer was to form yet another rebel "governing body" consisting of around 30 people.

World rules is declining, trust me. It might still be strong wherever you live. If that is the case then I certainly feel sorry for you. Blackball rules are much much better and the only viable choice for an expansion and development in English pool.

Personally, where I live, all the local pool leagues are old epa with a couple of singles leagues being blackball rules. There is a world rules county team but even some of them would rather play blackball county but there is currently no infrastructure for it - thought that might change this year.

I for one am in favor of keeping Britain a separate country. They kind of remind me of a colder, less ricey Puerto Rico. Notice how they kind of copied our system of government, LOL? Such a darling little country. They try to find other places, like Australia and Bermuda, and make adorable Island clones of themselves, complete with that cute American-like government. I went to Britain to meet English people but all I would find were people from other continents. I wanted to try authentic British food but apparently it's very unpopular there.

Anyway, let's keep Britain British.

It would depend who asked the question. If it was some douchebag trying to stir up crap, the response might be a little different.

Also, right now the best players are an Argentine and a Portuguese. The best club teams are in Spain and Germany. And Germany won the last world cup, in a close win over Argentina. Not sure Brazil still holds that crown.

5 world cups, literally thousands of successful exports, all over the world.

Ask Brazilians why they are no longer the greatest footballing nation on earth, and I'm sure you'd get a reasonable analysis of the current situation.

That's what mature nations do.
