Why don't champions match up more?

I find it odd that champions don't match up and play more offen. I would think they would be playing constantly. Most after they getting put out of a tournament, c-ya later. Just a thought...

because it's a coin flip...

the reason is two fold...

1) for champions it will be a coinflip as to which will win.

2) They'll have to show their true speed to win....

On any given day, the top players in our sport can beat each other or lose to each other, it's a coinflip and at that level of play weight doesn't matter so much.

Often times when top players give weight away to lesser players, they don't have to even play their true game to win even giving up weight, so it's not worth it to kill their other action to play other top players where they can't get away with hiding their game.

Of course that doesn't mean it doesn't happen it's just not as likely unless the payout is really there for top players to play each other.

Dude, point #1 well taken. Point #2 makes no sense if the guy is a champion than he has no speed to hide we already know his speed. He plays like a champion.

But what difference does speed make if they never play anybody to begin with. There are a lot of great players out there that never get in the box.

#1- Their money if funny or they're broke.

#2- Most of them get staked and most smart stakehorses want the nuts if they're giving odds on the money.

Even the top guys at the local rooms rareley match up. Pride and wanting the cold nuts, are just two of the reasons. They'd rather give up weight to lesser players than play an equal.

All pool players are looking for easy pickins.

Why do you think most pool players are so frustrated with our sport.

Here's a classic example of why top players rarely match up....

A friend of mine who is a AA rated player had gotten knocked out of a handicap tourny, well another guy who is a "A" player wanted to gamble with him and was egg'n him on. Finally my friend was like ok, lets play. Well the "A" player was like ok, I want the 8 and the breaks..... WTF

And the "A" player wouldnt budge from the weight he wanted....

A lot of the older players ran to other forms of betting if they made a score. Horses or sports betting.

Today's geniuses, run to casino's and poker rooms.

They don't have the patience or the brains or guts to bet on themselves.

Because the illegal money is funny. Without the drug money there is nothing to distribute anywhere. We have no corporate funding and a lot the sports gambling money ends up in poker tournaments.

another thing

i hate to say it but its mostly ego and being scared to lose. many guys on tour are not broke and can get staked and will play nobody.its cowardly and im not gonna name names but many of the pros bet on football play poker and go off in casinos.when i ask them to play they say i dont play anymore, give me weight, they wanna fight etc.pathetic

whatever happened to playing for pride?? Very sad.

I can understand why people don't want to gamble big money on, perhaps, a coin flip... and I can understand why stakehorses only bet if they think they have the nuts... that's economics.

I don't understand why the top players on the planet wouldn't want to match up for pride's sake... maybe pay both the guys for participating and the winner a handsome reward. In this situation, the only thing you have to lose is pride... you are making money and you have the chance to be able to say "I beat this guy, I'm the best."

That's the difference between pool and the big sports. I can promise you that a tennis pro who wins Wimbledon isn't crying because of the fat check they just received... they aren't thinking about it at all. They are happy because they have reached the pinnacle of their sport and their hard work has finally turned into something to be proud of. Same goes for the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, World Cup... it's about pride and it doesn't seem like anyone in pool has it anymore. That's why the sport is dying... it ain't poker.

The big athletes aren't losing anything if they don't win... they just don't win the extra prize. It's hard to ask someone to enter into an agreement and take big risks to accomplish great things when they have so much to lose. When you have nothing to lose, you can accomplish so much more.

500 a set would be great action. Just seems the warriors are gone. I bet some would say they got smart. I say they got boring. Get off your ass and in the box, play times over.

My personal opinion is that the majority of today's pool players -- at least here in the States -- are tournament soldiers.

Several decades ago, there were more action players than tournament soldiers, and action was much more prevalent, i.e., Johnston City, et cetera. In fact, tournaments were a gathering place for the gamblers. After the tournament was over, the real pool players would begin to open up, and that was getting THE action going. There was more money won in the action than the tournament payouts in this era.

I have formed a new opinion about live-streaming action games today, mainly having to do with the logistical arrangements.

Some things will just never be the same when it comes to games of stake on a field of green. It's time to move on, I guess. Tournament soldiers are where it's at, playing pool in a church-like atmosphere.
