Why is the Derby City not a ranking event?

You would would think the BCA would have the Derby City Classic 9-Ball listed as one of their ranking events...

It's only one of the most important events of the year with the most players as well.

Political? financial?

Maybe they don't think a race to 7 is good enough?

ESPN matches are a race to 7, at the most important time..

I think a race to 7 is a good test of skill, only the best survive, especially 13 or 14 matches.

The BCA could allow the players should vote on which events are ranking events.

I would vote for political.

It has to do with money payouts, I think.

But I'm sure if I am wrong, there will be the usual responders that will provide information that differs from my point of view.

It's not a ranking event due to the buyback format. In order for DCC to qualify they'd have to change it to double-elim. Funny that the thing that makes DCC so unique is the thing that will always keep it from being a ranking event.

I would vote political and to vote the BCA out of the ranking business. Johnnyt

Mike Howerton and Jerry Forsyth are currently member of the BCA ranking group. I think the BCA should just hand it over to them, like they did when they gave Charlie Williams the authority for the UPA to be the governing body of professional pool for males. Jerry and Mike collectively would be a good choice to handle this. Get it out of the BCA's hands permanently.

It would be in much better hands if the BCA would just relinquish their involvement. As a representative body for North America in professional pocket billiards, they sure don't cut the mustard.

Pool's fourth estate seems to have a strong involvement in the BCA, along with those industry members. Professional players are merely on the bottom rung of the ladder.

TimKrazyMon hit the nail on the head. Greg was told it was due to the buyback format and the only way to sanction it would be to change to dbl elim......

That's a ridiculous reason not to have it count toward ranking. I do not know one professional who has a chance to get in the money that doesn't buy back after a loss. That really makes it a double elimination. The only people who don't buy back have no chance.

According to AZ Billiards explaination

How the BCA Ranking System Works

The BCA Ranking System is designed to rank American players according to their performance in American tournaments. Open single-discipline tournaments with total prize funds in excess of $40,000 - $25,000 of which must be added money - are considered for inclusion in the list of ranking events. No event shall be included whose dates conflict with major American or International events such as the WPA World Championships or ranking events that are already included on the BCA rankings calendar.

The BCA recognizes that not all events are equal. Events with larger fields, larger purses, and a larger number of top players deserve to carry more ranking points and they shall. In like vein, events that are smaller in scope will have ranking point deductions applied. The BCA standard event is a tournament with a field of 64-128 players whose prize fund is between $50-100,000 and whose field includes 13-15 of the top 20 players in current ranking points. The BCA reserves the right to change the definition of a standard tournament as circumstances require.

Fields less than 64 players will be penalized 10% of their points. Fields less than 48 players will be penalized 15% of their points. Fields of greater than 128 players will be given a point bonus of 10%.

Purses less than $50,000 will be penalized 10% of their points. Purses greater than $100,000 will be given a bonus of 10% of their points and purses greater than $200,000 will garner an extra 15% in points.

Fields that do not draw more than 12 of the top 20 players will be penalized 10% of their points and fields that draw more than 16 of the top 20 will earn a point bonus of 10%.

The basic points system that we will use is the same one used by the Camel Tour back in the 90’s. Here is the breakdown for double-elimination events: 1st=140 points, 2nd = 120, 3rd = 100, 4th = 80, 5-6th = 70, 7-8th = 60, 9-12th = 50, 13-16th = 40, 17-24th = 35, 25-32nd = 30, 33-48th = 25, 49-64 = 20, 65+ = 0 points. For single-elimination events the points are awarded as follows: 1st = 140 points, 2nd = 120, 3-4th = 100, 5-8th = 70, 9-16th = 50, 17-32nd = 35, 33-64th = 20, 65+ = 0 points.

Furthermore, the BCA recognizes that not all players can compete in all ranking events. Therefore, all players will be allowed to 'drop' one event per calendar year from their rankings. In this manner, players may miss one event per year and not suffer penalties to their rankings. Those players who do attend all events will also benefit in that their worst performance of the year will not be counted in their points total.

$77,000 in prize funds (including $25,000 added) should qualify the tournament for Money..

IMO having 13-15 of the top 20 players.. has got to be the issue.

What is the break down of money in EACH tournament held at the DCC...as this is not a single event...it's multiple tournaments...combined they meet the BCA minimum added prize money...but not individualy...per event....I don't think.

Here is the current list of top 20 BCA points rankings:

1 Rodney Morris
2 Mika Immonen
3 Johnny Archer
4 Darren Appleton
5 Corey Deuel
6 Dennis Hatch
7 Shane Van Boening
8 Charlie Williams
9 Thorsten Hohmann
10 Mike Dechaine
11 Earl Strickland
12 Ralf Souquet
13 Li Wen Lo
14 Manny Chau
15 Jeremy Sossei
16 Lee Van Corteza
17 Shawn Putnam
18 Francisco Bustamante
19 Ernesto Dominguez
20 Warren Kiamco

With the exception of last year (Euro tour stop), sixteen of these people are regular attenders of the derby. The only ones I've never seen at the Derby are Hatch, Li Wen Lo, Sossei (don't know if he's been), and I think possibly Kiamco.

Glenn,
The DCC 9 Ball event is $25,000 added and usually has over $77,000 in total prize fund. This is from the flyer for the event you can read it for yourself here ;
http://dcctickets.com/2011EventFlyer/tabid/197/Default.aspx

Banks and One Pocket aren't considered at all for BCA rankings. Banks has $10,000 added and approx $50K total prize fund. One Pocket is $15K added and approx. $52,500 total prize fund

Another question that might be asked, WHY does the BCA care?

Unless it has a lot of money to give to the players that qualify in these approved events to get to the World Events (I know... what world events?) Check the WPA schedule for 2011)
