Ive used headphones a few times at some louder tournaments but I use the ear bud type so I can keep one ear open to hear my opponent if needed
It took all the way to posts 8 and 9 I believe, to tell it like it is.
It is rude and lacks the dignity the game deserves.
THE REAL PROBLEM IS ... generations removed from higher moral standards don't have a frigging clue what we're talking about!
That my friends is a much bigger and troubling issue that this particular and specific grain of sand on the beach.

Unfortunately, the fact you have to ask to have someone explain, is a real issue. Somewhere along the line, this life lesson on courtesy got dropped...

You're playing a game with somebody, not by yourself. When you're in the bathroom with a magazine, feel free to ignore the world.. when you're involved in something with another person, act like it.
It shows a complete lack of respect for not only the game, but for your opponent. Having to explain that makes me want to hit somebody, most likely one of your parents. :bash:
It is a small thing. You're right. No babies in Bosnia will perish over this issue. But it is disrespectful to expect those around you to take extra steps to get your attention when you should be making yourself readily available since player interaction is expected at some point in a match.
No one is saying you have to say good shot every time your opponent makes a good one but he shouldn't have to jump up and down like a mad man to tell you that you are on two. And yes..I am exaggerating just a bit...

It's not like I have blinders on and if spoken to I will respond. How much interaction should you have DURING a match anyway? I don't want to be bothered when I'm shooting and I will not talk during my opponents turn.
It's seen as a form of disrespect. When you do this it gives the appearance that you do not care about the game, your opponent or yourself. It may seem like it's old fashion to some, to others it is just a common courtesy.
I think it comes off like you are not giving the game the attention it deserves. Not everyone will agree with that and some will just think it is completely stupid. To each their own I guess.
I am 62 and just retired last OCT. I worked in 7 factories so I've heard just about every nasty, vulgar, racist thing you can say, and I'm no prude. I wear earbuds when I play, when 2 particular men are in our pool room., One is an 86 yr. old WWII Navy vet, and the other is a 74 yr. old Korean Army vet, so he says. Both men use loud profanity and one makes racist remarks. This in front of women. I guess it makes them feel more like a man to use this kind of language in front of women. I was not raised like that, and it makes me feel uncomfortable, so I wear earbuds to block it out. And before you ask, yes I have complained, and they put up signs. Tomorrow these 2 will be back from their holiday with their families. I wonder if they use that kind of language in front of "their" loved ones. Some of the most polite people I come in contact with are young people, but they are almost always people of color. The ones who are rude and get drunk and in fights seem always to be white guys. I've seen that happen to 2 really good players lately that I always look forward to playing when I draw them in a tournament, because they are good players. Now they are barred. What's up with these people?

This is the main reason I started wearing an ipod with earbuds. That, and the nasty language that comes out of some people's mouths, unbelieveable, and in front of women and children too. I think it makes them look cheap and disgusting.
I wouldn't do that and I don't want it to sound like I am preaching or putting down someone who doesn't agree with me. We are all entitled to our own beliefs and opinions.
I appreciate someone who can discuss something civilly while maintaining a difference of opinion.

want to do it while practicing, or playing with your friends, it's fine by me, but not when you are in a tournament. Your opponent deserves more respect than that. It is just as annoying as the guy who gets constant cell phone calls while you are playing him. It just isn't necessary.

Yeah the phone call thing annoys me to. I would prefer if my opponent not waste my time by talking on the phone during our match.
Can you give me the name/brand or model of that player?
I wear them more becuse of medical reasons. I have P.T.S.D from combat. Crowded places make me feel edgy and very uncomfortable i start having flash backs the music in my ears reminds me hey your home not in combat.
This brings up a question if i can get a letter from my docter stating i can wear head phones for medical reason would the tournament allow people like me to wear them ?
