Without The Cupcakes, There's Not That Much To Eat

I recently played in a Seminole Event in Providence Rhode Island.

The field was sold out.

Sixty-four players. The entry fee was $300. The house also threw in a cool, $25,000.

I got there early on Saturday and players, from everywhere, started showing up.

The draw had been done the night before. It was an OPEN DRAW.

One particular player, a champion, showed up and he was complaining about the person he had to play in the first round. Heaven forbid, he had top play a worthy opponent.

He was telling, anyone that would listen, "There's fifty cupcakes in this field and I had to draw, so and so. He went on and about how the best players shouldn't have to deal with such things. They should be seeded. For about half an hour, this player, pissed and moaned about his fate.

Despite all of his whining, he went on to win his first match.

A funny thing did happen though.

He suffered a second round loss.

Then, low and behold, he played a CUPCAKE, in the money round. As you probably figured. He lost to said CUPCAKE. What a crying shame. Another CHAMPION falls to a CUPCAKE.

If it wasn't for CUPCAKES, there wouldn't be full fields. I think they deserve a little more respect. Without them, you guys will all have to step up and play, each other, for far less purse money.

Thanks for the post. It tickles me that the cupcake won. This guy (champion?) sure didn't have a winning attitude.

Useless without names.

Also, the hall throws in the $25k? I thought it was via the Seminole Tribe?

Good story. Under "non-whining" circumstances, I wouldn't have cared who won...However, I always enjoy it when someone who "thinks" they're special and thinks they "deserve" special treatment - and has no problem letting it be known how "special" they are - has their a$$ handed to them by the underdog...

Go Cupcakes...(of course that sounds like I'm cheering for a pee-wee league girls softball team...). :p

I thought you were complaining about not enough snacks at the latest tournament.

That was one thing I disagreed with Shawn Putnam about in the US Open boycott debate. He was pushing for seeding and I don't like anything that skews the odds one way or the other before the players even get to the table. Everyone should be treated equally. Same goes for disqualifications for not showing up within the allotted time after your match is called.

Good story. I'd have been rooting for the "cupcake" hard.

Nice post.

I don't care for the all the whining and complaining but I also think a good argument can be made for seeding the top players. I don't like seeing the best players knock each other out early in a tournament. I'm actually quite surprised they don't seed more tournaments - I think it can make it a better tournament for all players - even the cupcakes.

To be the best you got to beat the best. So why worry about how many "cupcakes" you do or don't get to play. (to call someone a cupcake=disrespect imo)

Mr. 12squared, you win a prize. Two hostess cupcakes. There at your local store. All you have to do is buy them. There in the SEEDED section of the store.

Was gonna name my next session team "The Wrecking Crew".

Now pretty sure we'll be "The Cupcakes".

Thanks for the story, Tom.

Best,

Honestly, with players seeded I probably would not go to many, if any, seeded events. If the pros don't like playing each other in the early rounds, let 'em do something else for a living. I've seen way too many egotistic players expecting preferential treatment over the years and you might be surprised at who some of them were.

My guess is Earl Strickland: http://www.seminoleprotour.com/brackets/SNOOKERS_-_SPT_Brackets.pdf. But it's just a guess. He drew Dennis Hatch first round and lost the money match to someone I do not know finishing 17th, one out of the money.

Viva la Cupcakes!

Dave

In turn, Dennis Hatch was the biggest complainer at the Turning Stone of the game of 9-ball (he had a 9 lucked in on him by Zuglan, perhaps, and a 9-ball break by Alex even though Alex beat him 9-0). He can be fun to watch due to his skill and bravado, but his demeanor left a lot to be desired for me to root for him. Dennis pretty much let his presence be known during the player's meeting and his corn cob strut.

Great story, Tom. Makes me think we need a new pool axiom: If you enter a tournament and can't tell who the cupcake is in the first five minutes, it's you.

That's true, and I'm not sure the cupcakes would show up and flop down $300 bucks knowing they would face a top pro in the first round and have an automatic loss.

However, the guy who eliminated Earl, Joey Dupuis, is a solid player. He also beat Stevie Moore in that tournament. Maybe Earl thought he was a cupcake and underestimated him.

As far as I remember, since I watched Earl get eliminated, was that the "cupcake" he played was one Mr. Joe Dupuis. When Joe is in high gear, no one has to like it. He simply outplayed Earl in that match. He deserved to win. Joe is in my mind a great player, and a great guy. I've seen him lose, and do so respectfully. I've also seen him win, and do that respectfully too.

Nice job sir, especially under the circumstances Tom outline ha ha!!

I'm sure he is a very good player, just trying to figure out who Tom was talking about by looking at the brackets.

Just for the record, I was not bashing Earl, just trying to solve the puzzle. There are other that complain about many things, including Dennis Hatch apparently :).

Thanks to all of you that took the time to comment on my thread.

It was Earl, doing the *****ing. It was Joe Dupuis, that knocked out Earl.

Earl should, know by now, there aren't that many CUPCAKES in the New England area. It's not the first time he has come into our area and gotten beat.

It pained me to sit and listen to what Earl was saying. Steve Goulding went far beyond anyone's expectations bringing in The Seminole Tour to the New England area. He didn't deserve having a world class player complaining about his situation before the tournament even starts. It's all BS as far as I'm concerned.
