Women hustlers

About thirty years ago a clean cut couple that said they were from Chicago came to Charlotte and the guy broke three of the best players in town at the bowling alley-poolroom on Morehead st, He beat Slim and Butch and Little Johnny. When they quit on him he told Butch he felt bad about beating him and would let his girlfriend play him some for a thousand a set to let him get some cash back, Butch got a backer and jumped on the wagon and she played at least a ball better than her boyfriend. They won about ten thousand total and knew enough not to be steered over to play Denny Searcy,I can't remember there names do you know of them, Leonard
 
There are many women who played for money but not many were on the road like men road players. There are several women who drove to a near by towns and played for money and I do not consider them as road players.
I do not know how to classify shelby ( late Tony Ellins wife ).She was a an excellent money player but she did not go on the road on her own and she was on the road with her then husband where ever he went but she did not hustle and she just played for money.one of our AZB poster gambled a lot with shelby in early 90s. cue repairman Joe Blackburn`s ex wife was a good gambler and was a good player.Ming Ng was a hustler in the true sense.But can she be classified as roadie? I do not know. Bellinda calhoun never hustled anybody. past US open champion david howards brother`s exwife was a real hustler but was not a roadie.there are many more women who played for money but they were neither Roadies nor hustlers.one time when Bonnie and Clyde ( kristi and holly) were on the road julie nogiec of las vegas, busted them and julie is a money player but not a hustler.A quick anecdote about rachael abbink the real QUEEN OF THE ROAD :
Approximately three/four years ago Rachael busted a guy in Birmingham, AL and walked out of the room with 11-13,000.00 $.She went to her car with her guard and opened the door.Dang, a guy was sitting in the back seat of her car and he put the gun to her head.The guy who was supposed to guard her ran away.She gave 11,000.00 $ to that gunman and escaped with out getting hurt.Interestingly the same year when there was big time mugging in the parking lot of Executive Inn in louisville during the Derby city there was a very tall & big african american man in the neighborhood.This is the same man who was the bouncer/security at the pool hall in Birmingham, AL where Rachael was robbed .Is it coincidental that the tall & big man was nearby the crime scenes? I do not know the answer.One time I knew the name of the this tall & big guy but now I do not remember.

considering the earnings of some of these events hiring a security staff might make things more attractive.

I knew a few female hustlers in my day they sure make me want to keep a few of my boys indoors. They are not only the most two-faced people I have ever met but they will also take your money and leave you without any clothes on your back all while one of her own are going to work on all your stuff.

I have seem them use what cunningness they have to blind you and leave you with a smile on your face. It is certainly despicable and they enjoy knowing what they're doing. I talked with a one of them I knew from the light and being around her just makes me feel dirty. And Im used to being dirty.
 
A good hustler must have a character or something that makes you believe you have an edge. I think a good female player has half the battle won. I'm sure there have been girls who have had no trouble getting a game.

Marissa Tomei did well enough at that Pool and Chicken place on my cousin Vinney.:)
 
Probably Monica and Helena are the best twosome going today. They will play and bet some wherever they go. And it takes a strong player to get the best of it with them.

Everyone knows that Rachel Abbink is looking for action. And Jeanette likes the action too, and will bet high. Vivian is another one that will not duck a money game. She played Harry a little 500 a game Banks in Derby City and took him off. And yes, Jennifer Chen is a dyed in the wool gambler. She has been known to make and lose five figure scores, some as high as 30K. Played a lot in the company of Aileen Pippin during the 90's.

I put Ming in action a few times for small sets like two or three hundred and she always got the cash. We played partners One Pocket one time against another couple and won that one too (50 a man and then a 100). Kim Benson from Reno was another good little money player. I'd back her, she'd win. I'd leave for a while and when I come back she was in a bad game. Happened more than once.

Sherri Hudson was a serious road player, traveling with Gabby all around the South. But the all time best had to be Lori Shampo. She actually sought out games with good players, and tried to raise the bet at every opportunity. It took an 'A" level player to have a chance with her, and she beat some pretty good shortstops. Too bad she was hooked on the big H.

I was in a big bar in Elkins, West Virginia, once.
This guy was beating everybody playing $5 a
game barbox 8 ball. I stepped up & drilled him 5
straight games. He & his girlfriend kept arguing;
she saying she could play better than me.
She tells me $10 a game.
I was suspicious but figured why not.
Three close games later she's won 3 straight.
The challengers come out of the woodwork.
She's worked it up to $200 a game now &
cleaning up.
I asked the locals if they'd ever seen her before.
Of course they hadn't. One guy said she was
awful lucky.(most games were close). Another
said she didn't play bad for a girl.
I just laughed. Fools and their money are soon parted.

Good acting skills but NOT going overboard with acting.
I am a big defender of hustlers and hustling.
 
Santa Ana Rose

The first woman pool scuff I remember was Santa Ana Rose in the 70's/80's. She was pretty much a bar pool player but you were liable to run into her anywhere in Orange County in those days. She ran with Gabby for awhile and used to show up at the original Hard Times in Costa Mesa. I remember Charlie the Ape staking Joe Finesilver against her at Hard Times, and she was giving Joe the 7 and the break on a barbox. Joe couldn't make a ball anyway and Charlie was trying to shark her every way you could think of, but I think she got the cash. She didn't play as good as the ladies of today, but she was in action whenever I saw her. John Henderson

I saw Lori and a few other women come through "The Rack" in Detroit during the hey day, circa 1979-80, when EVERYONE was there. Lori got plenty of weight from most of the players but took off the lambs too. There were others coming and going, sometimes hoing too. In fairness, most were being managed by their player b/fs and the b/f made most of the games. I never knew of one travelling on her own or with another woman.

Rachel came through Detroit as recently as last week, and she'll bet it up. She's at least a ball better than any other woman I've seen gambling, not playing in tournaments exclusively...Tom
 
Its funny we have a girl here in Richmond..i wont say her name..but she does have a backer..and she is a bomb shell...hell i found out from talking to her that she actually lived at the end of the same road i lived on ..just in diffrent counties..i lived on 723 in victoria...and she was on 723 in Nottaway...wishi would have know that cause i would have rode my bike the 25 miles to give her a "ride" but anyway..she is a 4 or 5 in the apa...and i see guys in line waiting to try and play her..and she wears some tight "revealing" clothing...so their focus aint on the ball on the table..but she rapes them time and time again..she has asked to challenge me to a game..but i think people have told her that she doesnt stand a chance so she backed away from it..but i love watching her tear these guys up..she has started shooting in the tiger planet tournaments....hmm think I might show up for some of those..GREAT THREAD
 
Tammy Jones has been known to bet a dollar from time to time. She's knocked off some pretty tough competition over the years. Also, I wouldn't call her a hustler, but it sounds like Kelly Fisher will bet it up pretty good as well.

Ain't it the truth. Can you imagine one of those two slipping off down to New Orleans and someone like a Jamie Farrell offering either one the 7 ball???

How dumb would Jamie have to be to give up that kind of weight to one of those champions? They could probably win what's left of the town.

I posted this thread when Pancho died. I think it is worth repeating.

I go back to the 60s with the departed Pancho. I have lived with him and he has lived with me. 40 years later I still dont know his real name. Believe me, I have tried diligently to find out. I traced him back to the 7/11 poolroom from when he was 16 and I still cant find anybody who knows him by anything other than Pancho.
Vince Carelli is definitely not it. Nor Vince Furio and several of his other aliases. He was a turned out hustler and triple treacherous - not a real knock to me considering the difficulty of those times. He gained fame in the pool underworld when he dumped the record mogul, Phil Spector for 10k to Marvin Henderson in Hollywood. He was an accomplished "woofer" and was great at irritating people into gambling. He would always stop just short of a beating. He knew every pool proposition bet and everybody knew him and he knew everybody. In the course of our relationship he screwed me many times, but he would always charm himself back in with me. It is not easy to forever discard a real journeyman "brother in blood". We always had fun hustling together. The last few years of his life he specialized in beating the Casino's around the country for big money with a slot machine gaff. He could get 9 cushions on a dead rail billiard table with one hand. He could probably hit a billiard ball with one hand harder than anybody alive.
Jay, do you remember Santa Ana Rose? She was a staid little Jewish school teacher from Calif. that Panco corrupted and turned into a clone of himself. Her real name was Judy. She would go into bars to hustle with the same obnoxious act that Pancho used. I went out with her one night to hustle the bars and in those days (70s) sex was a given. She almost got me beat up with her foul act and so I punished her by giving her a bad count on the money I won. They used to call it "going South with the cheese." I was morally bankrupt in those days. It goes without saying that our evening ended without any sex. She didnt play too bad for a girl, though.
I am kind of amazed at how little stir the passing of a true road warrior like Pancho has caused. He may have been disliked by many, but he was a true, unique character in pool, much more interesting than most.
In my opinion, if you parachuted Pancho and the whole BCA Hall of Fame in the Sahara Desert, in one week Panch would be eating shish-ka-bob and playing Gin Rummy with the Sultan, holding out extra cards, and half of the HOF'rs would be starving and down to jockey weight. I've only got maybe 3 or 4 hundred more Pancho stories but I will close for now. RIP old pal, there aint too many of us left.

I was never dumb enough to gamble with Lori (God rest her soul).
She was pretty impressive and I was a youngster then..
Instroke I will be at Wally's tomorrow, hope you'll introduce yourself. I will have the prettiest cue in the room. And you can bet on that.

Absolutely right, Jay. I seen her play 5 and 10k sets in Detroit. I was madly in love with her, and she liked me, but I could never seem to separate her from her boyfriend long enough to do any damage. It was just never to be. For big money she terrorized all the women players and some of the men.
