Women vs Men

The Predator 10 tourny, Jasmin has been competing vs men..Okay either her or Gae Young Kim are the best female players in the world? Just my opinion.

Yet the "girls" don't seem to be able to compete with lower level pro "boys" in what ever sport you want to choose?

Pool is particularly a game of touch. Even the break, Corey Deuel has deftly displayed that.

Men seem to have no inherent physical advantage of women in this game???

What is your question?

If you ask me, all the evidence points to women not being as good at pool because they aren't exposed as much as men. Chess I think is a better "sport" to compare the two sexes. There is no inherent advantage there for certain, yet we see the same patterns. Again, it's probably from lack of exposure. Only time will tell how good they will get relative to men, perhaps they'll be better one day, who knows.

I do not know why men seem better at games/sports that don't rely on physical strength for success. But its true, men are better at:

pool
darts
golf (putting too)
bowling
free throw shooting
horse shoes

God made 'em pretty, so we'd like 'em.
Made them curvy, so we'd like 'em.
Gave them a sexy way, so we'd like 'em.
And made them stupid, so they'd like us men.

I think it is a mental block that women have had since time began, and in no way I'm knocking women or their abilities. They have been told that they can not compete on the same level with men and it's in the subconsciouses that weakens their ability to compete when playing men. In any physical game this is true but in pool I think they can if they can get passed the ideal of playing a man. In golf a women can't drive as far as a man but on the putting green they can play every bit as good as a man. Jean Balukas showed that she had no fear of men is why she could compete with them. Take the top 10 of women playing their best can play with the men if they can block out the fact they are playing a man. I say let them play the ghost race to 10 and let a man play and then compare the sets, I think it would be very close match taking out the man factor.

There are at least three women better than Jasmin and Ga Young Kim, and that's just from China. So the women are getting better now. JMO. Johnnyt

Wrong, on both counts, Papa.

The top 10 women aren't able to compete w/ today's top 100 men.

To 10? Why not a foot race of 2ft or less.

No defence playing the ghost. Johnnyt

I tend to go the other way at it, based mainly on my experience in APA. Women at a certain skill level tend to be better than men at that skill level.

Background: men in the APA start at skill level 4 (range is 2 to 7 in 8 ball)
women in the APA start at skill level 3.

A male 3 has moved down a skill level. A female 4 has moved up a skill level. If I'm playing a female 6, they've moved up three skill levels over their time in the league. If I'm playing a male 6, they've only moved up twice. The higher-level females I've played tend to have better understanding of strategic and defensive play, and tend to be more conservative with what types of low-percentage shots they'll attempt. The higher-level males I've played tend to better shotmakers, because they're generally more aggressive and actually want to learn how to make those impressive low-percentage shots. I don't know any strong female players who "poke'n'hope" but I know a lot of strong male players who do. A male player in desperation will try something insane and aggressive, whereas a female player in desperation will try something defensive.

I think the disparity between men and women in sports in general comes down to the 2% of activities that actually require more strength than women are physically capable of mustering. The other 98% is actually pretty even.

If you're comparing the average female player to the average male player, or the average pro female player to the average pro male player, then yeah, men are better on the average, and that is probably due to the exposure and opportunities available (and social mores) to women playing bar games or contact sports.

Meliisa Little is the best female player here in Colorado. when she "Works out" she only plays against men. I practiced with her once.

I started writing why I thought it was different, got long winded, then just deleted it and went with the following.

Basically give all men sex changes, hormones, tits that get in the way and in some cases weigh a ton, and shorten and weaken the men so their reach and break strength is all equal between men and women, then the women would probably be kicking most mens asses.

Johnny got it right. There are several women today who have had success against the men, including Jeanette, Allison, Jasmin and especially Karen Corr. In China there are three or four young women who may be playing at the highest level of any women ever. I saw Si Meng Chen play and forgot I was watching a woman. Perfect cue ball, great pocketing and cool under fire. If she ever gets the chance she may takes women's pool to a whole new level. I say she can compete against any man right now! I'd like to see her in all the open tournaments, including the Predator. She can compete on this level and have a chance with anyone!

Even before she was not known outside of Brooklyn she would come out to Long Island and gamble. Even back then when she walked though the door of any poolroom the whole room was like a freeze frame. She walked into my room on the island once and walked right back out in seconds. My room didn't have much pool action but you could order anything from boats, cars, or motorcycles, to guns and bodyguards. Johnnyt

Well, I rarely sound in on these posts, but decided to this time.

I am of the opinion that the ladies can most definitely hang with the men. I have seen them play in many instances and there is nothing, minus a big break sometimes, that they cannot do. And your ladies like Ga-Young, Jasmin and Xiaoting have greatly equalized that field (in 9 and 10 ball anway)

I do have to disagree with the standard of the Chinese women being higher than that of the play we have been seeing for years from Allison Fisher, Karen Corr and now Kelly, Jasmin, Ga-Young and Xiaoting. I think the game as a whole has evolved leaps and bounds from where it once was but the standard of everyone is getting better.

I have said and still say, and Mark Wilson sounded off on this with me and agrees, that if you gave Karen Corr a break, she'd often place or win big open men's events--often. These top women run out from everywhere, they jump superbly, they kick superbly, some of them break superbly, their safety game leaves nothing to be desired and their shot making abilities are outstanding. In fact, I bet you on average in a 9-ball match, Ga Young Kim sinks more balls on her break than most anyone else, male or female.

These are my thoughts on the matter.
