WORLD 10 BALL CHAMPIONSHIP (6-10 Sep 2021), Las Vegas, 9ft, Winner $35K

Maybe I've been keeping up with pool even less than i thought, and 10 ball has never really been my game, but who the hell are half these people?
The best players from around the world. That’s what you get with a WPA World Championship. The players are chosen based on federation rankings.

While I'm very happy to see this event on the calendar, it doesn't have much credibility with me quite yet. The payouts are worthy of a world championship, but a 64 player invitational field filling methodology that clearly omitted some of the stars of the game added to a failure to adhere to the Stage 2 seeding methods always used in multi-stage WPA sanctioned mega-events tell me that this event is still not to be reckoned as one of the truly elite events.

they omitted top players by choice or by covid default?

i know wu and zheng should be there, but the chinese players can't travel atm. some mainland chinese players have turned to c8b because of this. ko brothers, kevin cheng, lee van, bustie, i do not know their reasons but i bet they are travel related or personal

to me those circumstances don't lower the credibility of the tournament

Watching live pool on Youtube is the best streaming platform from a fan perspective, IMO. The reasons are you can pause and rewind live action. Its great to press the "J" key to rewind a shot 10 seconds, then press the "live" button to jump to the current action. You can also pick the resolution quality that suits you best.

agreed! and if you really hate the commercial - pause the stream for 10 min, play and then fastforward every ad 120 sec

A comment regarding the camera work: It almost feels like we are back in 1985 ESPN pool camera coverage, where the camera operators are pros, but they have no idea how to play pool. It seems like a few times per rack, the camera angle doesn't give us the view we need to understand the whole shot picture. I haven't seen this with pool streaming in several years, because they have all been mom and pop pool companies that know the game. I wonder if on this event, they hired some outside pro camera operators, who don't know pool.

Not any

Not anymore, he came back and decisively won.

Yea got pumped back up, I saw it happen... when Bador missed a real thin cut on the 10 it started it. Then he hooked himself (much like I do haha) and I watched Shane rock in his chair and jumped up to the table when it was his turn again. Was nice to see. I wish I would snap out of it like that sometimes haha

Shane wins 10-4.
yeah, he was getting frustrated because things just weren't rolling well for him. It's possible that the miss on the 8 was a skid which would've pissed me off if it happened and I got down 3-0 as a result.

I have noticed that 3-0 is where Shane typically turns it on though. Luckily in a race to ten, it leaves enough time to make the come back. But yeah, putting up 10-1 in an alternating break format is pretty damn impressive.

slow start though. against jayson (if they get there) he needs to play better.
Yeah well the thing is, if that 8 ball miss WAS a skid, then he didn't really do anything wrong. They just weren't rolling well for him. Then he had a couple of break and runs to boot. If he can play like that, he should do fine, but I can't wait to watch.

Agreed!

The live chat though - stay far, far away.

I get that his opponent is on the hill, and every shot counts. But holy hell, he legit took 5 whole friggin' minutes to decide what to do on this shot.

Yes, COVID is a factor but it's not the only factor. The field is way too small to include many of those capable of contending for this kind of title and no event having a field of 64 is a credible world championship. Invitations were handled in a way that adheres to WPA rules, but this year, those rules don't work because some have had a far greater opportunity than others to maintain a high WPA ranking.

Similarly, the Stage 2 seeding methodology discriminates against those whose WPA rankings plummeted due to their inability to play in the most recent big events on the WPA calendar, virtually all of which were contested in Europe. Hence, even for those who are in field, the methodology is ridiculous. Using WPA ranking for seeding this year does, in my opinion, delegitimize the process. That's how someone like Alex Pagulayan (Fargo 815), who was long stranded in Canada, ends up seeded below Yapp (800) , Oi (804), AlShaheen (781), Thorpe (771), and Chua (800). Even though Alex went undefeated in Stage 1, he is a bottom eight seed in Stage 2, while Chua, Yapp and Oi, all of whom lost a match, are top eight seeds. If that's your idea of fair, I'm surprised.

This event will produce a very worthy champion that will have topped a very strong field, but the process of running this event was flawed, and I know unfair when I see it when it comes to pool.

This is a relatively new event and I'll be patient, but there's some tidying up to do for next year.
