OK, this isn't easy with all these great players, but I'll take a shot. The top two in each group will be (fingers crossed):

Group 5
GER Nico Otterman
USA Steve Lipsky

DOn't disagree with most of them but surely picking young Nico in group 5 over these three is a mistake?

FIN Mika Immonen
USA Jose Garcia
CAN Luc Salvas

PS
Top 4 go through (I hope!)

No doubt, Craig, it's a reach, but somebody will shock us all, so why not Otterman?

OK, bo prob mate youre right you never know. He actually played in the Korea event I played in and spanked Archer 11:1 I think before getting spanked himself by Charlie if I recall correctly. Certainly talented but he has struggled on the Euro Tour:

167 252 OTTERMANN Nicolas GER 97 200 129 180 - - - - - - - - 97 200 0 580

Still he's German and they love their straight pool. I'm hoping for a few different upsets hehe

I am definitely pulling for Danny Harriman to win this tournament. I would never count out Ralf or Toastie, I would love to see them both in the final. It will be interesting to see how Mike Zuglan and Bob Hunter play in this tournament. Bob is technically the defending Champion, I would not be surprised to see him score some upsets on many of the the younger players.

I'm going to go out on a huge limb and pick the winners. I say it is either

Danny Harriman or Mika Immonen to win the World title.

I say Danny because I hear he is one of the best playing the game right now. My other pick in Mika is simply because he is my favorite pool player so I can't pick against him.

I would love to see Luc do well to. Maybe even win it, and be our 4th canadian to win a world championship!

On to the matter of who will win the event.

My pick to win the title, which will surprise nobody, is Thorsten Hohmann, whose performance at the 2005 European Straight Pool Championships surely rates as one of the greatest ever straight pool efforts. In addition, Hohmann won over an elite field in his only appearance in the NJ Straight Pool Championships, and earned great praise from his fellow competitors, some of them Hall-of-Famers.

There are many who pose a threat, and I'll say that Thomas Engert is the one most likely to beat Thorsten out of this title.

While JL is not the equal of the very top men in straight pool - she's NOT that far away. She has studied the game and played the game to a greater extent than many men in the field. If her back is in any decent condition to play; she may surprise you both. I, for one, find that her straight pool play and patterns are quite elegant - a pleasure to watch for any student of the game.

I hope you will pay some attention to the rueful smiles seen on the faces of Ervolino, West, and Fusco after she beat them in the national 14.1 tournament 7 or 8 years ago. She has improved significantly since then.
That sounds like Polictically Correct horse-pucky to me. Lee is an excellent female player, but she has no chance against male professionals in their prime. That she beat some over-the-hill old men is not a reason to assume that she'll do well in this field; even though there are some weak players on the list. Like many others, I'm mystified by the players who were not invited.

If I was going to pick winners I'd have to pick someone from the German contingent. Hohman is never a bad pick in any sort of contest, but from what I hear about how he plays 14.1 the choice is especially good here. Also, Soquet is a fine 14.1 player (he won the 2000 14.1 U.S Open) and with as hot as he's been this year he's a good bet.

Of all the woman they could have invited to play in this tournament I think they should have gone with LEE, Corr, Fisher. I definately would be interested in seeing Fisher compete.

What's the process for selecting who plays in this tournament?

Mander,
I wonder if you and gulfportdoc have ever seen Jeanette Lee play straight pool? This is NOT 9-ball with power breaking determining the winner.

She is no fluke to run a 100+. I like he straight pool game better than her 9ball game by far. she will not be cannon fodder trust me.

OK, Lewdo, you're in action. One round of drinks at Amsterdam Billiard Club rides on it. Hohmann wins, you're buying. Engert wins, I'm buying. If neither wins, we have no action.

SJM,
I will have to say that I'm with lewdo on this one. Thomas Engert looked extremely comfortable at the table at the DCC this year (I don't believe Hohmann attended), and has some significant competitive straight pool experience (see Accu-Stats catalog).

While Hohmann has certainly improved, Engert positively radiates that raw natural ability to pocket balls (sort of like watching Earl the Pearl). At DCC he was easily the most dynamic player in the room. Oliver Ortmann has said on several occasions that of all the German players Engert has the most natural ability and most potential. I hope he shows it soon - maybe I can weasel a drink from you as well.

To all the Pinoys out there familiar with Orcullo's game, how likely is it that Orcullo will make it out of Group 7? How likely is it that he can actually win the whole thing? How much time has Dennis put into straight pool?

This tournament can potentially provide a great data point to help support my hypothesis that rotation is the game that gives you the most versatility, provided that Orcullo places well in the tourney.

Efren, a rotation specialist, won the Maine straight pool tournament in 1995, and I'm assuming his straight pool experience was limitted at the time (at least compared to the other straight pool greats that participated in that tournament). If another rotation specialist (Orcullo) takes the title away from the straight pool aficionados, it only helps prove my theory that rotation is THE game to play to give you the most well-rounded game.

LOL Well if you think that Orcullo plays better str8 pool then DAN BAROUTY you must be smoking something funny. If anyone is a favorite in that bracket it is Dan Barouty and then MYSELF!!!!!!! LMAO

I wouldn't say so either....Nico is young hotshot. He is currently serving in the sports brigrade(hope this is the right vocabulary) of the German army like Ralf and Thorsten did years ago. So he has plenty of time to practice.. He won a couple of juniors titles nationally and european and he is an experienced player though only beeing 19. Just don't underestimate him ..if he is on a roll he sure can make it passed the round robin stages. I personally favour Thorsten or Oliver to win this, but Engert (if his outstanding ability shows) and Zobrekis are always good for a big surprise. For all of you who want to see some entertainment at the table, watch Klaus Zobrekis game....fast, flashy and 100% offense guranteed.

Just my 0,02$ ....
