World 14.1 Times & Forfeiture of Mike Sigel's Match

I think some of you may need to re-read that. He didn't say the times were not posted, he said the times were posted.

Which is exactly why it makes no sense. If Sigel's match time was correctly posted how in the world could he not know when it was?

I am at the Straight Pool Tournament here in New Jersey. The tournament times were posted when the last round was completed. It was quite late. I can't tell you the exact time. Mike Siegel stayed out all night. He showed up at about 7:30AM and looked at the tournament chart. He was standing next to me and said "Good! I don't have to play until 1PM. I can get some sleep"

I did not look at the tournament chart. So, I am unable to verify if it was correct or not. I think Mike was very tired and maybe a little drunk. I think he simply misread the chart.

He did show up in the tournament room about 10:50 dressed in shorts and t-shirt. He was given the option to go and change. He got mad and said he did not have time to get ready. So, he basically decided to forfeit himself. I do not think the TD or Dragon Promotions has done anything incorrectly. Everyone was in the room ready to play except Mike Siegel.

I have a hard time believing that this is the first time that Mike Sigel has ever misread a chart. Right on the heels of Corey misreading his. Riiight.

FWIW,

I was standing looking at the boards seeing whos up and when and lo and behold sigel came up and just started talking for roughly 1/2 an hour with me getting a few nods and "yeahs" in. he explained to me he checked his time and it was changed on him. the top half of the board all said 11:00 am the bottom half said 1:00, excpet for two matches. its his case that this is where it was changed. why the inconsistency? i should also add that he never really talked badly about anyone, just that it happened and what can he do?

also he explained that he has never gotten a match time wrong, and he plans his week accordingly, whether hes eating an early dinner or a late dinner etc. etc. based on the board. i mean he did do this thing professionally for a little while.

granted i could have been a cardboard cutout of a person and he would've kept going, but that's what he said.

I had a feeling that that is EXACTLY what happened. Thanks for the post. Actually, I've talked to Mike Sigel in person myself before, and you described it EXACTLY right! LOL! :D :D :D :D

My thoughts too... Not exactly professional behaviour, drinking all night before your match...

Players such as Ralf, Thorsten, Nick, Niels, Jasmin etc will not even taste alcohol before they are out of the tournament. It's about respecting pool for being a sport.

I just saw a group of players that will be in CW next tournament. They were in a camera shop in Florida pooling their money to buy a camera with a time and date stamp to take pictures of the bracket board before they leave the venue each night. Johnnyt

I'm not the biggest Mike Segal fan but I know a crappy story when I hear one. I don't think he chose now to misread a chart after never having done that in his career, and I doubt Mike was DRUNK. Maybe tired. Maybe had a drink or two.

Either way, I'm sure none of you guys saying "shame on Mike for having a drink during a tournament-it's terrible representation for our sport bullcrap" have ever had a drink with dinner when trying to wind down after your matches are over.

Sweet, I don't think it's about choosing to do that.

notice how he said "mike sigel was not present" as if to say it's not my responsibility to hunt him down and let him know. He did notice moke was not there though. i think someone could have let him know somehow. But if he was my opponent i prolly not tell him. Lol!

hi guys
sorry to chime in at the last minute but...

CHARLIE WILLIAMS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CLASSLESS ACT BACK TO THE DAYS WHEN HE STARTED PRETENDING TO BE ALL ABOUT PROMOTING ASIAN PLAY AND SO FORTH---THE VERY FIRST BIG APPLE EVENT AT MASTERS?--ON A MICROPHONE IN FRONT OF FULL HOUSE
CHARLIE WARNS/THREATENS ALL PLAYERS -PAY YOUR DUES OR GET
"PUNISHED"
I HAVENT BEEN AROUND SERIOUS POOL FOR A WHILE BUT IT SEEMS TO ME
LOTS OF GOOD PLAYERS DONT PLAY IN HIS TOURNAMENTS--SOME IM SURE JUST DONT PLAY BUT IF THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF THE IPT TOUR WAS A FLUKE?-NO GUYS ARE SICK OF LITTLE GUYS LIKE HIM MAKING CASH OFF THEIR BACKS AND DICTATING WHAT HE WANTS-SOMEDAY CHARLIES GONNA PISS OFF THE WRONG GUY
THEN WE GET TO SEE THE STORY ON LAW AND ORDER

I was there and heard the same words with my own ears. It was shocking.

There's a whole lot more that happened during that year as well, but I won't clutter up the thread. I have it documented already for future reference, sine die!

Maybe, being my age, Mike has a hard time reading up close as I do? The 11:00 could have looked, to him, as 1:00. Just guessing here, no opinion.

Maybe using military time would help? 1:30 p.m. would be listed as 13:30, for example.

And, again I must ask: What about the spectators? That' where the real money will come IF there's a good show....fwiw.

To clarify, the times were posted immediately after the final round robin matches and calculations were finished late Wed evening.
The players were notified seeds #1-8 would play later rounds at 1pm. If a player not seeded in top 8 was not playing a #1-8 seed, they would play at 11am.

Approximately 30 players, coaches, fans were there to check tournament times, Mike Sigel was not present.

There was no correction or change of times.
Danny Harriman, Sigel's opponent, was present to see his match time after the round robin calculations and was there on time for his match at 11am.
Maybe others will buy into your deceitful ways. I don't buy it! Just like i didn't buy the story you and your staff tried to give me when you refused to return my 500$ entry fee for Vegas.

You concocted a story and posted it saying "i thought your entry fee was for someone else." Whatever! Oh and lets not forget you telling me there was over 100 people on the waiting list; however, someone who was not even on the waiting list mysteriously jumped to the top and was entered. I feel sorry for those 100 plus who were waiting on your list that didn't realize this happened.

You need some lessons in honesty young man, and a new staff!

Go ahead all, send the RED rep! This is FACT!

Just a guess, but it sounds like Sigel assumed he would be seeded in the top 8 and therefore assumed his match was at 11.

I really HATE to take anything resembling CW's side, but...just saying...it looks like he/DP may not really be at fault here.

MM

I was just getting ready to post the same thing. It makes sense to me, only one to miss his time is MS. I'm sure he was figuring to be seeded in the top 8, with all that attitude and ego he has. I'm not saying Sigel can't play, he's still a great player. {I honestly don't like him much, but thats another story from long ago}. Whether they had the actual times posted at 6pm, 8, 10 or even 8am thew next day, if you don't know for sure what time your match is, you get up early and go check the board. Like Jam said, "thousand's of tourneys he's played in"..... I don't care if I see it on the board at 8pm that5 I play at 11am, In the morning I always check the chart again.

As I finshed reading the posts in this thread, It's just like all the others, we'll never know for sure what happened. Was the time actually changed? Was Mike tired or drunk, and misred the time? Is it Mikes fault? Is it CW's fault? I should have stayed out of this, I'm gettin a headache. LOL
No matter what, we all know there's been some lousy stuff happenin at DP tourneys

I feel like I should have some words of wisdom here since I am an expert in the art of being late.

Unfortunately, I have nothing.

Maybe Mike forgot he isn't in the top 8 anymore?? =)
Oh, I beg to differ. Want to bet against him? Never ceases to amaze me that people think, just because he's gotten a little older, that he "just forgot how to play?" I don't think so.
