World Pool Championships - Updates

Six of seven Filipinos won their games. Could possibly have been 7 out of 7 so far if 2 of them did not match up with each other (De Luna vs Felicilda).

Marlon Manalo defeated SVB 11 to 7 and Bustamante eliminated Ko Pin Yi 11 to 8 but it is the never heard of pinoys like F. Felicilda, Oliver Medenilla and Raymund Faron who are impressing me.

If Ronnie Alcano and Vinancio Tanio make it in the next session, we could possibly have 50% or 8 out 16 pinoys in the final 16.

What's interesting is that players are making comebacks despite the alternate break format.

Does it count as a Filipino win when the Filipino is playing under another country's flag?

I am assuming they got in via the qualifier rounds and it did not matter what country they chose to represent.
 
Yang is another one of those great players to have never won a world cham pionship yet....i would love to see him against Bustamante in the finals. Actually Busti is a world champion as he won with team Philippines in 1993 world team championships. Many here always forget that, he has no singles title though except 2nd to Earl in 2002.

Seven of the nine qualifiers were Filipinos who are based in the Middle East.
1 Vinancio Tanio - UAE
2 Raymund Faraon - UAE
3 Oliver Medenillas - UAE
4 Joven Alba - Kuwait
5 Francisco Felicildas - Saudi
6 Allan Cueterro - Kuwait
7 Israel Rota - Qatar

The other two were Algerian - Taqi (also based in the Emirates) and So Shaw
who hails from that part of the World but lives in the UK. They are all house pros over there and I believe that Ronnie Alcano, Jeff Da Luna and Antonio Gabica and a couple of dozen more fall into that category.
The plyers No1 to No4 were also qualifiers for this year's World 8 Ball in Fujairah.
Their presence in the region is also raising the standard of the Arab players and there are players in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Jordan and the Lebanon who are only a notch below this level and improving fast
 
The scoring page seems to have an error. It lists Toru as being in the final 16, and yet the live score shows him as having lost. What the hell is going on over there? lol
 
I just really don't understand how the WPA couldn't arrange to have one feature table with even a normal webcam set up. Just give the fans SOMETHING to sweat visually.

Secret WPC for sure.

Agreed. A high school softball game gets about as much exposure as this.

Anyway, on a brighter note, Archer made a comeback and has advanced. :thumbup:

Yang also came back from a 4-1 deficit, although considering I have money against him, I'm not overly pleased about it. :p
 
Meh.... I wasn't worried about Yang being 4-1 down to Nick. Yang is on a mission!!!
 
So gay!!! Probably the two favorites to win the tournament now have to play eachother, very unlucky. I would kill to see this match though....

Same here. Little Kuo is my main man. I hope he runs over Yang (although I can't say that I like the odds on this one).

I think it would be fair to say that this match is pretty even with maybe Yang getting an edge with experience, but man these guys got everything in their game. I just wish I could sweat this match.....

by the time he was 16, he was Japan open champion beating Fransico Bustamante. Pretty impressive.

This match up is worthy of a Final. A pity is happen so soon. That means only 1 Taiwanese left after this round.

As far as rooting for anyone besides Johnny at this point I have to be pulling for Yang as we have recently made a case for him -

But the guy I am REALLY pulling for at this point is Christian Reimering. He is one of the best players in Germany who has never really made it big. Looks like he is having a good run and if he wins it I would be genuinely happy for him.

He has a big wall called Ronnie sitting in between him and the trophy though.

HUGE respect for Jason Klatt too. A year ago he was just another Canadian sharpshooter. But this year, during the World Pool Masters, US Open, and now the WPC, he's been crushing world beaters on a near regular basis.

Sadly he now confronts Archer. Win or lose, one of my top picks is going out this round.

Yeah, I thought about that as I hit the send button. Jason has definitely been coming on strong.

Well, let's hope then that it's Archer or Klatt vs. Reimering in the finals. :-)
