RALF Souquet will begin the defence of his PartyPoker.net World Pool
Masters title against Mosconi Cup team-mate David Alcaide.

Souquet, who has won the Masters a record five times, faces a tough
first round encounter against Spaniard Alcaide in the opening match at
the Hotel Zuiderduin, Egmond aan Zee, Holland.

These two players know each other well as they were part of the
near-miss European Mosconi Cup side that played America in Rotterdam
last December.

The Masters, one of the most prestigious events on the pool calendar,
will be held from June 8-10 and features 16 top players from around the
world, including reigning World Champion Ronnie Alcano (Philippines) and
current European No.1 Niels Feijen (Holland).

Each match will be played in a race-to-eight, alternate break format
with a 45-second shot-clock. The prize fund totals $62,000, with the
winner pocketing $20,000, while first round losers take home $1,500.

I wonder how the rest of the field feels when they see the "murderers row" line up of Chia Ching Wu, Ronnie Alcano, Souquet, Ortmann & Engert?
I'de probably include Feijen in this upper elite also, since he is a streaky player and has done well so far this year.
I want to go "way out on a limb" :) and predict that the winner will be one of the aforementioned.
Specifically, I think the final match will be between Wu & Alcano. I'll go with Wu as the winner.

Its ironic how the world considers the US the founder and birthplace of professional pool and immense history of the sport, yet not one company here is willing to take the initiative and try to make it happen, it just amazes me. The mfg. only care about the home market, what a joke, and I'm with you Johnny, the writinig was on the wall not many years back, and now its truly here, it sucks.

I don't know why, but it seems that players are invited due to pro tour rankings and performance in international events especially the World Championship. I am pretty sure that Tyler Edey (GO TYLER!!!!) was invited based on his excellent showing at the WPC. Since there is no national mens tour in the US, no US player can be invited based on rankings.

I am curious as to whether or not John Schmidt got an invite. Considering that the US Open is a major tournament (and I believe that it is sanctioned by the WPA) he should have been invited.

I am surprised the Steve Davis is not playing this year, he always seem to be invited back based on popularity, but I was always happy to see him play. But that brings up another point, that players are often invited due to popularity. I'm not sure whether or not Tony Drago has done anything of note in pool recently, but he is in the tourney.

All in all, it's a great field of players and I hope it gets broadcasted in Canada again this year. My only complaint is that I hate winners breaks.

2nd place at EC in 8ball. Very successful on Eurotour. Former winner of WPM.
He's one of the top European pool players.

He can't seem to be able to do anything in snooker nowdays.
 
It's one thing if the U.S. players can't pay the freight to make it to a big tourney in Asia or the Mideast, but Holland? U.S. tournament performances don't count? Wimbledon and other Grand Slam tennis tournaments always have a handful of wild card entries open for top players who've been off the tour for whatever reason. Golf has that provision, too, I believe. But this just smells like they'd just as soon keep Americans out ... nothing but a nice little exhibition, then.
 
Tony Drago also finished 2nd in Russia Open, 2nd in Eurotour Switzerland.

It's obvious that popularity is important when they pick the 16 players, and this tournament is gonna be broadcasted in Europe and Asia, so the majority of players will be Europeans and Asians.

Also, no Americans finished high in either 8-ball or 9-ball World Championship....

Yes, US Open is a big major tournament and I think John Schmidt def earned a spot in the Masters, but maybe he is out because he didn't play any of the World Championships?
 
I didn't realize Tony was doing so well in pool. I love to watch him play and am happy that he is having success.
